Here are a couple I just picked up among a batch of early 50s war comics - when I get them in hand I will create proper scans

That is very disappointing to hear.

For discussion sake let's say I had a comic for sale and it was a no-doubt 9.2. Beautiful in every way. Nice gloss, sharp corners, just the slightest bit of handling wear, but an all around definite 9.2 structurally. But somewhere along the way this book was stored next to a large steaming pile of feces and the smell was absorbed into the paper. This beautiful book acquired such a stench that even lifting a flap on the bag caused serious watering of the eyes.
Does this book get down-graded for the odor?
Are those CGC slabs odor proof?

I think this cover rivals Exciting Comics 35 as one of the coolest Jap war covers (thumbs u
Those are some evil yellow devils!! I didn't know Bucky was such a fan of the machine gun - did he use that a lot in the stories themselves?
-
Wow!
Any history on this photo (the man holding Superman #1 & Batman #1)?
Unbelievable..and check out that BLB collection against the wall

It is a very taboo subject, and people will reference it from time to time but it never get's discussed in depth with most people hoping the subject goes away. What Roy said is accurate from all accounts but it's all you'll see said on the subject in a public forum.

This thread just got very interesting

I dont have any problems from Dave the Dentist. I have bought many things from him but I always keep it about business. I dont ever try to be friends with him. He sells a lot of top quality stuff, stuff that you cant find anywhere else.
I'm picturing George Costanza practicing handing out money for when he buys soup from the Soup Nazi

That's a great line

But to be fair to CGC another huge collector John Verzyl has confidence in them.
They graded his AA# 16 Mile High copy. Im sure that was hand delivered . Maybe he even watched the intire grading process.I know I would if it were allowed.
Doesn't Verzyl own the run of Mile High Timelys unslabbed?
-
If he's not selling them he wouldn't care. I would love to know the official grades though.
-
Anyone know why he doesn't want to slab them?

ah, my old copy (the 774 submission is still on my old invoice list)One of the most iconic covers of the Golden Age!Beautiful book!
there it is in my old group shot from a few years ago... nice to see how many books stay among our fellow boardies
That is a sweet set!!. And the #1 (#2) in a Blue holder. That is one tough book to find unrestored.

I like that Binder cover, giant robots and the big splash from Cap 18. I think Cap Mavel 20 also had a pretty nice splash.
That Cap 18 artwork is from Marc Swayze who was one of Beck's assistants. He really originated the look of Mary Marvel. Jack Binder really refined it with his Mary covers. Great stuff

FANTASTIC

I'm not liking that page crease and page tear at the bottom. Some wavyness too. Page quality is probably white though!!

I believe they are strip reprints (but I could be wrong) and definately not in full color - I believe they are duotone. I found more info on them online:
"A story paper of limited collector interest apart from an unusual run of 21 issues featuring reprints of Superman, the first time the character was published in the UK and only a year after his debut in Action Comics #1, June 1938 (the most valuable American comic book - $40,000 in GD 2.0 up to $600,000 in Near Mint Minus 9.2). The run from #772-793 includes four with a Superman cover appearance. A set sold in the UK in 1994 for £1,500. I remember a San Diego Comicon around the same time had a set stickered at $6,000 but it didn't sell at the show. In June 1996 the first issue of the run #772 (5th Aug 1939 - the one on the right in the illustration) sold for £152 in VG condition with rusty staples and tanning edges. The one on the left is #788 and an example sold on E Bay (Nov 2007) for £107, sold by the inestimable Mr. Stuart Dexter (lindex). In June 2004 a lot including 18 of the issues with 2 (I think) of the Superman covers in Good to Very Good condition sold for £618 at the longest-established (and my favourite!) auction house for UK comics."

Just what I was looking for. Thanks
-
I think one of them is the second issue with Superman and the rest are a couple of issues after that one.
-
Have any opportunity to pick up 3 or 4 issues from the Triumph magazine Superman run from 1939. I'm not too familiar with these in terms of scarcity/demand. Any opinions?

I'm the guy who found that Buzzy #70 for Ian. Shield and I gave it to him. I think one other issue came to light from the same source soon after that. Not sure that I have seen any since.
Anyway we were glad to help Ian out on that one as he was looking FOREVER for it.

Sheesh. That book is just disgusting.
Rarehighgrade, where'd you find the time machine?
He got it from here
By the way..beautiful beautiful books

I used to own this copy. It had some slight non breaking color bends on the front cover. It would have graded much higher if not for those
Western comics.

Yes ...Harold Winfield Scott was the cover artist and he did a lot of western pulp covers
