I'm retired from banking. It all depends on what "cleared" means to you. Unfortunately, if you ask your teller at the bank they'll tell you a check is cleared the moment they see your funds made available. However the bank makes funds available to many customers before actually getting paid on a check. That means misunderstanding "cleared" could cost you if the bank does not get paid and reverses your transaction. The word cleared is misused by customers and bank employees all the time, sadly.

That's why I say take checks but "know" the check writer, because ultimately the bank will hold you responsible if the check doesn't pay. Here's just one scenario. You wait seven days after a check is cleared before sending art to a client out of an abundance of caution. A month goes by. Suddenly you notice a reversal in your bank account. Turns out that yes the check you deposited did actually clear. But it turns out the check was written off the account of someone other than your client. The good funds that allowed the check to clear belonged to someone else. That person makes a fraud claim and the bank investigates. The bank determines the "cleared" check was fraudulent/unauthorized and returns funds to the victim. In turn they go back to your account and retrieve those check "cleared" funds. You did nothing wrong but you are out of the money "paid" to you for the art you've sent. The bank always holds you, the depositor accountable for items deposited. A bank can even close your account if you deposit a bad check. My 2 cents. I can argue this all day but I hope I don't have to.

I am only saying know who you're dealing with before accepting payment on their terms. If you feel confident taking a check have at it. Good fortune to all.

In your opinion, how long should I wait before I send the artwork out? Is there an average time it takes to have his bank pay mine? I'm going to ask when I deposit it, but now I'm a little worried. It's not an amount I can easily repay.

Just get your money up front. And when it's time to ship make sure you collect enough to get full insurance on the package you send.

I personally have no business dealings with A. Williams. Is he also on CAF? Has he been on there awhile or did he just show up with a new profile?

I'm getting a cheque. That should be ok, shouldn't it? He's been on CAF for about a year.

If it is the A Williams with the first art in the upper left a Luis Royo and then a Greg Williams as the second art in the featured area, then I can absolutely vouch for the person.

That's the person! This has put my mind at ease. Thanks!

  3. Hi all! I've just been offered a decent amount for my commissioned artwork on Comic Art Fans. He's in Cudahy, WI. A. Williams. I'm not getting any bad vibes from the buyer but I want to be sure it's above board.

Just don't do something you will later regret doing.  If the graphic novels brought you joy before they could again.  And you might miss them at some point.

Have you tried creating something yourself?  Maybe drawing or doing something crafty?  You could possibly sell what you create at the same stall and have the same end result.

I can't draw to save my life, so that'd be out. As for the comics, I've had no passion for them for years. They do nothing for me, and I really think they'd be better off with someone who wants them. They're sitting in the box I sent them back to Canada inside. I haven't looked at them for more than 2 years, so I think I wouldn't miss them. The only problem is trying to sell them off. No one in Calgary seems to be buying and I'm not sure even my uncle's flea market stall will take them.

Try to stop focusing on your own misery-think about and help others.  Thats the way to happiness and cure for depression.  I dont even know you but seeing someone suffer from depression tears at me.  I've been there.  :foryou:

I think the best way I can help and get to feeling better is to buy KyoAni stuff. To that end I will take all my graphic novels and collectibles to my uncle's flea market stall and let him sell them for me, and use the money to buy as much anime and manga as I can. At least then I'll feel like I'm DOING something. Something constructive.

I think it's too soon for me to think about. I'm still in shock, I guess. I can't see the philosophical side yet. I'm not religious, but I know energy is neither created or destroyed. I just hope that the energy these wonderful people had is somewhere good.

The best cure for depression is start doing things for others and take the focus off yourself.  It works.  This is a terrible tragedy but flowers grow from ashes.

I don't even know if I can. The one thing that gave me a little joy is forever linked to some scumbag taking 33 innocent lives. People I will never meet who gave me hope. People who will never see their families again. It's an open wound. Sorry, I'm being quite maudlin about it. But, nothing I have collected has given me anything near this level of happiness. Comics didn't do it. Hockey cards didn't, game used hockey sticks didn't. I can't watch K-On! or Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid or Violet Evergarden again. I can't re-read the manga. Maybe later, much later, but not now. Hollow feeling. Like I'm empty of happiness, and there's nothing left to replace it. Sorry Kav, feel free to ignore me. I'm just down and I don't know how to get back up.

    throat punch

Kick in the stomach. I felt sick when I saw it. I suffer from severe depression, and had a 16 year relationship end two years ago. Two suicide attempts. Then I saw the anime "K-On!", and it made me feel just a little bit better. Some of their work made me cry (A Silent Voice, K-On! episode 24, Violet Evergarden episode 10), but most gave me such indescribable joy. I am still crying about it off and on. I feel so helpless. I want to help KyoAni buy I live on welfare. I can't afford to but manga and Blu-Rays even though I very much want to. I just want to do SOMETHING.

Who would have thought my 600th post would be this? I wanted to spend it with something silly, like saying "600th post and all I want is a Moon Knight #1! KIDDING!"...but this is what I get. I'm sorry to be so down about this. It's hit harder than I thought it would. So much evil in the world. :'(

  9. Hi all. I'm still in a bit of shock. The anime and manga producers Kyoto Animation were hit by an arson attack today. 33 people died. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-49027178

KyoAni have produced some anime and manga that has gotten me through some very dark times for me. I am stunned by this. My heart goes out to the families of the deceased and I hope the injured recover quickly and fully. I can't believe it. They make things that make people happy, give joy to the world, and some insect has to destroy it.

If this isn't the appropriate place for this, mods, please move it to the right place.

    James

    *EDIT*

To show how much the company means to me, my avatar is of Tsmugi Kotobuki, from the anime "K-On", a KyoAni show.

Yeah, just get a fan of 50 $1,000 bills, and wave them seductively at your face, while feigning indifference. Make sure you drape your leg casually over the end of the dealer's table.

    And wear a short skirt.

You just made me spit water all over my keyboard...

And to answer OP's question, just offer what you think is fair and pay no attention if the dealer flips out about it.

My Christmas raffle prize, sent using FedEx, went missing.  Called in and reported.  Guy on the phone says driver left it at door.  Case closed.  Called and re-opened case, now driver says he gave it to a man at the door.  Impossible, as I was at work and the only one home was my mother.  Called again and they said there was nothing they can do.  I will never use FedEx again.  They are the worst delivery service

Just because the box went missing, doesn't mean they actually delivered it to the correct address.  I hope the box is recovered, but, I doubt you'll get much help out of FedEx.

Try using UPS. I'd never sent anything via courier before so I went to the UPS store near my house to send some game used hockey jerseys to be sold through an auction house. I had no idea how to fill in the papers, and there was a huge line behind me, so I said I'd take them away and come back. No no no the guy says, I'll do it for you, you just sign the slip. Great! No. He valued my nobody Calgary Flames jerseys at $4000 USD each, when they were 'worth', at most $200 USD each. I had no idea, I'd never sent via courier before! Fast forward a week and a bit and the auction house emails me: There's a $600 USD customs charge on the package. WTF? So, I called UPS and explained what happened. Tough. You signed it. Too bad. So, the jerseys sold for $500 USD and I still have to pay another $100 on top of it to clear the debt. Thanks UPS! I'd rather eat my own face than use those unsympathetic, hypocritical scumbags again. It'd have been cheaper for me to fly the jerseys out to the auction house myself!

  12. I walked forty-seven miles of barbed wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie
A brand new house on the road side, and it's a-made out of rattlesnake hide
Got a band new chimney put on top, and it's a-made out of human skull
Come on take a little walk with me baby, and tell me who do you love?
    Who do you love?

    ...

    Otherwise, I got nothin'.

We are already taxed up the gazoo, but when it comes to beer nearly half the price paid is provincial and federal tax. With wine it is closer to 70%. Hard stuff? 80%.

Now our government has introduced what they call an elevator tax, which means that every April 1st (not a joke) they automatically raise the tax on alcohol by 2%. Forever.

Being a drunk has never been so challenging and this new tax is seriously cutting into my comic fix.

    Read this. https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/jordan-stjohn-/let-me-break-down-what-canadas-escalating-beer-tax-will-really-cost-you_a_23340121/

From the article: "Here's the other thing: All of the variation in excise tax between provinces? Completely irrelevant. Beer Canada came up with a number that doesn't matter. A "47 per cent beer tax" is not only not applicable in any specific provincial market, it doesn't matter at all. The excise tax being talked about is federal, and it is identical across every province and territory in Canada.

    ...

Essentially, what you need to know is that in order for this compounding increase to put the price of beer up a dollar a case, it will need to run until April 1, 2040. You're reading that right. People as yet unborn will be of drinking age before this costs you a dollar a case."

And as for the OP's post - what is the purpose of posting something so deliberately provocative? Some people cheat the system. That is independent of nationality. I for one, have never had a problem on eBay with another Canadian. Recently I have had several CDs go missing from sellers from China. Does that mean all Chinese sellers are trying to rip people off? No, of course not. You had a bad run. That's eBay, not Canada. And, as a fellow Canadian, I'm disappointed that you felt the need to make this thread to dump on us.

  14. I stopped collecting when I realized I was buying books and not even opening them up. I stopped reading them, and that's when I knew my passion for comics was dead. I have a big box of TPBs I'll never read again and can't sell off, and it upsets me greatly. They cost me a lot, and I can't justify throwing them away or giving them away for nothing. I'm not really even sure why I still look a the boards, to be honest. Habit, I guess.

He drew feet for the previous issue, Superman #8.

Ankles are a little thin, and the right foot is better suited for a horseshoe instead of a boot. But he passed. That bird at the top right looks happy, probably because Liefeld didn't draw any feet on him.

The bird's there to have at least one thing in the pic screaming for no discernible reason.
