I didn't think Americans knew that phrase. They don't! Well, since comics like Hellblazer and Transmetropolitan came out, some do.

I don't have any stories that play that well when it comes to deals I passed on over the years, partly because there were so many, and partly because it all boiled down to me being short sighted . I remember buying a Hulk 181 in NM from Blazing in '98 for $400 that would've gotten a 9.6 if I'd kept it, but no, I sold it for £400. Clever me. Also Bob had several other Hulk 181s in similar shape, but I left 'em . At the same show Vincent Z (pre - Metro) offered me a NM copy of Green Lantern 1 for OS guide (at the time that would've been $2,200). That book would've graded no worse than 9.2 according to CGC, and I was certain it was unrestored. But I passed on it. In '96 Conrad Eschenburg had a set of JLA 1-20 in NM (they were absolutely spectacular) but wanted double guide. I imagine if I'd bought the set he would've cut a slight deal. But again I passed. At the same show Harley had some tremendous stuff such as an Avengers 9 in NM- for $130. And that was just a random example. And yes, I should've gone crazy, but I'd only be dealing for about a year and half......so I passed again. How things have moved on, and how often do I kick myself for not having the balls then to bite the bullet and spend the bucks. Ya live and learn......

Yep, FD knows how to tell a story. I for one would like to hear the one about Greg White that happened prior to the All-American one (as I may have had a similar experience).

Yep, that's the book that Warehouse has on ebay as we speak - and I think they've had the book up for auction once before. The BIN that time was $850, which is outrageous, needless to say. I reckon the reserve isn't too far from that figure. The last time FAC 20 sold on ebay it was in VG (give or take) and sold for $350 (about triple guide) which shows how OTT Warehouse's reserve is. As I recall the winning bidder was blackcatcomics (as usual).

Was wondering the grade myself. Classic cover, you gotta hand it to the artist as not actually showing a decapitated body even though that's what you're looking at. That excuse (among others) came in handy during the senate hearings. A very good point - E.C.s imitators rarely understood the effect of implied or implicit horror (not that E.C. were that subtle themselves) and occasionally pushed the envelope too far, becoming too visceral, especially considering that we're talking about the early '50s, here. Here's the cover to FAC 20......... Very gruesome and sensational, and perfect grist for the Wertham mill. Sadly that isn't my book......... Not an item to show the missus, or any non-comics fan, for that matter.

Great (if gruesome) cover - funny how Fight Against Crime 20 goes for so much more, and the covers are pretty similar (yeah, I know, Fight Against Crime 20 is much scarcer). Looks like a decent copy to me - what grade did it get from CGC?

Why press it indeed? It's virtually unimprovable........ Killer book with a great cover, btw.

I remember the last HG copy of this book that sold on ebay went for around $1100, which was tempting (it was a 9.0). This beauty is marginally too rich for my blood, and does give me the impression that there are a few HG copies out there, but I'd consider going for it if money wasn't tight.

Thanks Lantern - I was in the dark on that one. I do have one or two C8s in my collection, sold as such, but with no COA or pen mark - so there you go. Beautiful books with excellent gloss, nevertheless.

Strange - I have seen Circle 8s without that rather distinctive pen mark. Unless of course the dealer was telling fibs.....

Checked GPA and only one copy of WM #5 came up. It was a 3.0 that sold last year for $310. I did spot a 7.5 on the CGC census, but have no idea what it sold for. Would've thought above $1,500 at least.

Fabulous OTT cover by Cole. Those Star covers were never short of melodrama (and garish colors).

As far as the icon pre-code books are concerned you're still going to pay well over guide (close to double) for copies in solid VG and above - but not multiples. What has happened is that collectors have noticed that most of these books are not super-scarce, with one or two exceptions (Mister Mystery 12 springs to mind). As for the common pre-code issues / titles, prices are indeed softer than they were.
