I think it's the other way around.
Until you can confirm that BP was not paid, then we should all be able to assume that it's $5.4m.
The burden of proof is usually on the conspiracy theorist, not the way other way around.

tth2 got a reaction from F For Fake in American Flagg #1 cover at HA.
Everyone's been focusing on the AF 1 cover, but no one's been talking about the first page of Love & Rockets, an equally iconic indie title, which just sold for $28,800.

You're preaching to the choir, Gene!
I think the prices being paid for a lot of mediocre 70s and 80s OA, which came from equally mediocre comics, is nuts. It's all about nostalgia, and once the generation that grew up reading that stuff stops collecting, there won't be any support.
Someone who didn't grow up reading John Buscema Conan is going to wonder why anyone would pay whatever it is that people who grew up reading JB Conan are currently paying.

Groo remained excellent for a long time.
TMNT was fantastic for about 6 issues.

Only if the signature took the form of a big red X all across the painting.

When I saw the painting, "Spartacus" came to mind before "Ben-Hur".

Without knowing more about the books, particularly PQ and QP, it's hard to say whether the price differential might be legit or not. If the cheaper copy has OW pages and is a miswrapped monstrosity typical of the period, and the more expensive copy has W pages and is perfectly wrapped and perfectly square, I could see a basis for the difference.

tth2 got a reaction from vodou in Glynn Crain Illustration SF art Collection to be sold by HA.COM
My comment wasn't meant as a criticism, only a statement of reality.
Comic artists from the pre-Image era were essentially guys good enough to make a living from being artist but not good enough to make the bigger money that commercial artists could make, and certainly not good enough in terms of creativity as well as technique to make it in the fine art world.

They're probably afraid to do so because then they'd have to come to grips with how mediocre most comic art really is.

tth2 got a reaction from I am not Glenda in Smith CONAN Cover # 5.....to be or not to be? That is the question?
All of the above. It certainly can't help that the piece is being relisted so soon afterwards, which means that the highest bidder in the Heritage auction is no longer interested in the piece.
But bidding dynamics alone could result in a big drop in price. If the bidding at the end of the Heritage auction was solely between the underbidder and the winner, and the 3rd highest bidder had tapped out well before then, then the Heritage underbidder could win this time at the price only necessary to beat out the third highest bidder, if no new bidder comes in and assuming that the underbidder and 3rd bidder bid at exactly the same levels as they did in August.
