  1. Thanks Jayman. When I found out I was going to get it along with two other covers I considered grails, I was pretty excited. The girl is actually a stat over the original art - as I surmise an editorial decision was made to shift her over in the cover for layout/design purposes. The HOS 110 and WMT 8 are going to be archivally framed and put up on my home office walls when I get a chance. Here's the third cover I got in the deal. I dig it because of the skeleton masses/stein of beer/decaying sentry elements. The logo stats were missing off this one, so they're replacements and the bottom banner is missing as well. Ghosts 42
  2. Sweet splash Shiver. Lots of nice inks on that one. Since I do not post at the same clip as a lot of you guys , I'll have to lower the standards on my "milestone" posts. 100th post and probably my favorite Dominguez cover (at the moment): Weird Mystery Tales 8
  3. Checking out boards like this one is a good first step in meeting other original art collectors. The more people who know you and what you collect, the more likely you'll get a shot at something. Comicartfans.com has a lot of great galleries by other collectors. Some will even have "For Sale" sections. Always worth checking out or even starting your own gallery if you do not have one. Also, if you haven't already, I would suggest joining the comicart-l yahoo group (I opt for the digest version - easier to manage your inbox that way) to meet others with like collecting interests as well as to be aware of items that aren't going the ebay or auction house route. I am not a long-time original art collector myself and am still learning a lot about it with every deal and contact I make. Good luck. Comicart-l Group
  4. You may be surprised by the amount a dealer is willing to come down off their listed price. I know I was at first. Plus dealers and private sales are where you'll find sweetest stuff...
  5. Ahhh. A recent acquisition from ebay, no? Very nice. It's hard enough just to get the dollar size comics in a decent grade let alone a nice original art cover like that.
  6. I knew you would get a kick out of it. Got in touch with the owner while trying to get contact info for LD. He is the biggest Dominguez fan out there - without a question. Very nice guy as well. One thing led to another and I was able to purchase the original art to 3 of my 6 favorite LD horror covers. To say I am psyched is an understatement. As an aside, I still haven't gotten in touch with Luis, but I have heard that he does commissions. If anyone knows his rep/agent or has his info, please PM me. Thanks.
  7. Told Shiv I would put this up. One of my favorite Dominguez covers, House of Secrets 110:
  8. Unfortunately, not as of yet. I have some other LD horror covers I haven't shared yet. I'll try and put up one next week (I'm out of town on business at the moment).
  9. Sweet, which ones did you get? I bought 24 of them, mainly from 50 to 123. I still need most of the early ones though. Getting #111 would give me 64-124. Awesome Evans, Dominguez and Kubert covers in the series. A mix of DC horror and war - cannot go wrong with that. Such a good run.
  10. Thanks to blazingbob for taking a big chunk out of my Weird War wantlist. Paid on a Friday and got 'em on Monday.
  11. That's the only Unexpected art I have currently, but I do have some more LD covers I'll put up once I get them scanned in.
  12. Thanks, I got it from him already slabbed. I hope to get higher grade (not necessarily top census) slabbed copies of the horror covers I own. I don't know if I will end up presenting them together, but it would be nice to have them paired up for my collection.
  13. I finally bought a scanner that can handle some of my original art. Not the most exciting cover I own, but still a Luis Dominguez DC horror one: And thanks to drbanner (thanks again, Mike), a CGC 9.8 version of the book (new scanner does not do slabs well, as you can see):
  14. I love the HOS 127 Pool cover as well as this one: DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #17
  15. I grew up on Dominguez covers on the DC mystery books. I actually read in a later HOS issue's "House of Secrets SPEAKS" letter column that there was a general section of the reader audience that were tired of his covers. Go figure. I think Dominguez is great and truly underrated. I was a too young to appreciate him while he was working, but I have found a new respect for his work now that I am older. I would love to commission a recreation or piece from him, but so far I cannot find much information concerning his status or whereabouts. The most disturbing thing I have found is this Comics Journal article mentioning some financial problems he and other out of favor artists are enduring: TCJ Article Very reminiscent of elder blues, jazz and rock and roll musicians living their later years on next to nothing. The guys who pave the way usually get lost later on down the line. I also have gleamed from the ol' intraweb that he did illos for Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer at one point and appeared at a Big Apple convention Sept. 13 and 14 (I am assuming 2003). Can anyone provide any more information on "LD"? Anyone see him at that convention or work with ACTOR and have an update on him? Is he represented by an agent at this point? Any info would be appreciated by me and I am sure the many other Dominguez fans in this thread.
  16. One thing you can never get matched in a census by is original art. This is the only HOM cover I have. I actually owned it before I owned a copy of the book. Quite a contrast between the two without the coloring. So much detail is lost in the printed cover. But the coloring definitely gives it the better look. If anybody has some Bronze Age horror original art, please post it. I think that has really been missing from this otherwise great thread. I am particularly interested in any Luis Dominguez covers. I have sniffed out as many I as could through normal routes, it would be nice to see what's being hidden away in private hands. HOM 234 by Ernie Chan:
  17. It's funny the census only has three copies graded and they are all 9.6s. I guess I am hoarding the issue, I have a raw VF/NM as well. Still need a couple of the Madhouses. I'll try and post some cool stuff other than re-hashed covers for the thread. I just had to show off that book.
  18. I know this has been posted before, but it is my favorite Red Circle cover (among some quality Morrow covers) and I finally got a high grade slabbed copy. I think it is the bright red and green cover scheme as well as the lighting/shading on the vampiress that do it for me. Red Circle Sorcery 6:
  19. Good point, those cheesy side panels certainly do distract from the main image. Takes away from the classy look of what could have been a really nice cover. How dare you downplay CRAZY QUILT!! , He has gotta rank right up there with the worst , lame brain villians. And yes I too have thought about how cool that book would be, if as you said.. it was an all Wolf/Bats, Neal Adams Cover.. The Art looks cropped, has anyone ever seen the Original Art for it? Ze- You can see the original art (plus Denise Richards ) in the December Playboy's article on original comic art. It is cropped a bit, but not much. The tag in the article says it is 11 x 17 and was traded recently for about $55k.
  20. Long overdue Kudos to drbanner for a 9.8 book to go with some artwork I have. Thanks Mike.
  21. Saw that earlier, but the description says it's mostly stats. I have to think that's why it's where it's at price-wise. Not to say it's not cool, but definitely would be much higher if it was all original. Sorry if I'm being Capt. Obvious, but there are much better bronze horror covers available that I would rather have. I am sure it will still go for a lot more.
  22. That's a sweet cover I haven't noticed before. Who did the cover? I cannot quite make out the sig.
  23. I just got them both and doubt I'll read them (they both look VF-ish and the #2 has definitely been cracked open and read before). I was just really into getting the '72 Wrightson covers after I first became aware of them. They both have awesome artwork and the coloring on each is noticeably better than most comic covers of the day. I probably should have scanned them individually and made them a bit larger. The zombies on #1 are sweet looking.
