  1. I am surprised no one has told me to band-aid on this cut. It is a structurally sound book with some popping colors, but man is that cut fugly. As I was scanning it, I was like "WTF?!?!?" I couldn't get it lined up right. Then I figured it out. I'd like to see the "footprints" or whatever for this one....
  2. Great stuff to know for my collecting. I see the digests pop up on ebay, but just haven't gone after them or won them when I have. Speaking of the 10 and 12 cent issues, I kind of like the content and quality of the war books over the duration of the runs compared to other genres. I know I have absolutely zero interest in collecting say, House of Mystery pre-174, but love the stuff after. Same goes with a lot of Silver Age superhero stuff. For the War books, it seems the content has the same appeal to me whether it is early 60s or mid 70s or early 80s. I just don't want to widen my focus too much or there will never be an end to it!
  3. Didn't he used to have a website? I know I referenced a Big 5 price guide I found on the 'net about 2 years or so ago and that name rings a bell. I think it was from him. It was just prices though and some notations. I used some of the info in compiling that "keys" list at the beginning of the thread.
  4. I remember vividly buying SR 314 off the shelf. Doug Wildey interior art, one of a handful that he did. I always loved his artwork. It took me about 7 years to peice together the entire SR run in VF+ or better, with most being solid 9.0 to 9.2. 300 pops up a fair but, but 301 is a PAIN to find in HG (mine looks 9.2-9.4 WP, and in years of trying, I've never seen a nicer copy). 302 is one of those bandwagon books that everybody wants, so it's tough. Truthfully, the three-issue story in 302 to 304 (a rarity for Kanigher) doesn't really work for me. But you've got to have 302, as Rock gets his own title. Everybody talks about there being hordes of bronze waiting to flood into the market. On these genre titles (horror, war, western) between late 1976 and 1978, I doubt there'll be a flood. It may well be one of the toughest areas to collect post-1960. Anyone who has a complete high grade Weird War run from 1977 to 1979 has a rare little stack indeed. Many of those books I have never been able to get above VF. Gotta keep hunting. But as Bruce Springsteen says 'Mama, that's where the fun is'. Shep 7 years. And I am still about 50 books shy of the Rock title. Although, I really haven't been focusing on it to be fair. SSWS/US and G.I. Combat get the bulk of my DC War attention. I am 11 books shy of a complete Weird War run and then would need to upgrade about 10 issues to get them all at VF or above. Of #50-82 (1977-79), 5 of those 10 upgrades need to be done there. I was hoping to complete that one this year, but am not sure if I can get it done. I appreciate your insight into the tough to find in grade issues as that way I can be on the look out for them specifically and jump on them when I do see them. Oh, and those 10 and 12 cent issues in the SA forum are fantastic looking!
  5. The scans don't really do either justice as I just thieved them from Metropolis when I bought them. The yellow is great on the 204 and the rich earth tones on the 205 are even sweeter in person. The 204 was $27. They have a slabbed 9.6 for $250 as well. But honestly, the 204 8.5 is good enough for me. http://pages.metropoliscomics.com/365/PictPage/1922479039.html
  6. I got these along with the 207 I posted earlier. Wish I could afford to get all of them slabbed in nice grades like these. Our Army At War 204: Our Army At War 205
  7. Very nice copies. Love the scuba fight cover. I am having a biatch of a time finding 300-302 in hg.
  8. Props to Blazing Bob for great service as usual. Paid late Friday for books off his site and they are in my hands the following Monday.
  9. Detective 404 with a nod to Enemy Ace on the cover (they are trying to make a Hammer of Hell movie in the story). Love the dark red, plus you get Adams' Batman. Too cool. This is a Rosa copy I just got today. I think there is one already in the BA Batman thread, so I'll stick this one here.
  10. Still plodding my way through getting these among other G.I. Combats. Of 201-213, I still need 203 and 210 before I have them all in VF and above. Just got this one - blank space at the bottom occurs with these Dollar books on occasion. Looks pretty good otherwise - not perfect though. G.I. Combat 207:
  11. Three nice Unknown Soldier covers in a row (two Hitler covers). Unknown Soldier 216: Unknown Soldier 217 (love the Rembrandt!): Unknown Soldier 218:
  12. All but the Weird War 72. That's the one I got from bobcat.
  13. Kind of a cool little tribute to the Golden Age by Kubert. Sgt. Rock 317:
  14. Wanted this one since I noticed it seems to be a precursor of the infamous Weird War 72 cover. Sgt. Rock 308: Weird War 72:
  15. Sweet books, I may have to move back my SSWS collecting focus instead of just starting at 151 (and of course, the 144). The top part of the Tomahawk spine has a bend in it (you can see it in the scan a bit). More noticeable on the back, but it's one of those defects which does not bother me at all - I mean the corners and the rest of the spine are great looking. I was surprised I won it for so low in late 2003. I just got a crizzap-load of Sulipa books today in the mail. A lot of Rocks in the 300s, US in the low 200s, G.I. Combats and some Weird Wars (am I ever going to finish that run?). Most are Manitobas and there are some wicked covers. I am off for some tailgating goodness, so scans will have to wait. Beer!
  16. Thanks. Good info to know. I just picked up some raw Rosas yesterday and want to check them out. I am assuming I'll be getting the certificate. I don't plan on slabbing them but you never know. I was curious as I thought certain collections were kind of "one time only" things with respect to the labels having the info on them. Like only with the initial batch or something (I'm thinking of MH2 maybe?).
  17. I told you your $500 figure for OA wasn't necessary to get cool stuff.
  18. Yup, a really nice washtone by Jack Sparling. He did the great HOM 205 as well I believe. Two great moody covers with a nice style. Your post reminded me of this archived auction I found while tooling around on Heritage a while back: Jack Sparling - Original Cover Art for House of Secrets #119 (DC, 1970). Obviously, not the cover to HOS 119 and more like a painted version of HOS 97. Anyone see the Heritage item published anywhere? Also, for the Don Rosas, will there be any indication on the label or was that only for the initial submission by dealer handling the collection? Just curious, I know it probably doesn't matter since it is not a pedigree.
  19. I may submit it for slabbing at some point b/c it is so sharp (gotta love bobcat), but as for right now it's not for sale. I have actually started getting some more OAAWs after deciding to focus only on G.I. Combat and SSWS/Unknown Soldier. Just got this one today in the mail. Rock is such a badazz, I couldn't pass it up when I saw it.
  20. I could see a Weird Western/Jonah Hex thread being interesting. Dunno anything about the Marvel westerns though. Could be informative. Yes, I am one of the #116 zombies. But, 123 is my 2nd favorite Adams Tomahawk. I also like 125 with the tense action and beautiful Adams background (pink!). $15 for a sharp looking slabbed CGC 8.0 OW/W.
  21. I bought it as a 9.4 and agreed with the grade. I think Metro is sketchy on sub-9.0s. I was a few books short on my last submission so I ended up throwing in some "keeper" books. Of course, if it came back with some retarded high grade it probably would not be a "keeper" any longer. p.s. Thanks for making me addicted to Oakland Star Spangled War Stories. Your 156 started it.
  22. Finally found my 286. It was "missing" for a bit.
  23. I am interested to see how much you get. Such a weird book. That back cover looks like her jr. high yearbook pic and then they have her in a fur bikini top with a phallic arrow on the cover!
