Well, not be a wet blanket about your dream book cuz its also one of mine, but Gary Dolgoff just sold a Action 13 on ebay in blue 3.5 for $34k.... That seems high to me, but it is the "Tec 31" of Action covers.
Yikers. Wasn't there a copy that listed recently for $15k? Or was that it? Pretty sad when it's a years mortgage to get a book like Action #13.
Yeah, that was the copy, min bid was 15k.

So the mailman finally came with my birthday presents, to myself
I've long wanted to read this series, but didn't really want to chase the set. So, along comes an opportunity to buy the whole set at once. Lower grades, but they are for reading
That is probably my favorite Atlas set Bill.
Congrats!!!
Wonderful books for reading and just charming art to boot. (thumbs u

I'm 34 years old and this is my first comic purchase ever!
I think it looks even better in person.
So you never owned or read comics when younger? If so that is very interesting demographic and optimistic implication for the back issue market.
I've never read comics or even bought one before last weekend, but I did collect other things such as baseball cards and even rocks when I was much younger. I also have a few silver coins but nothing serious. My first passion is cars. If I had money like Jay Leno I have no doubt I would have a similar garage to his.
I have a son who is three now and he just loves all super heroes. It is amazing how these characters have been around for as long as they have and they still continue to sell off the shelves. Movies are bringing in record numbers and the anticipation for future movie releases is always a hot topic.
I figured I better get in now before these things are through the roof. Besides, its another hobby for me to learn about. I like researching things and I love variety...and there seems to be almost no end to that in this arena.
I have a feeling there are others like me who will also begin to buy some of these first issue comics while they still can for at least somewhat reasonable prices. After all, they aren't getting any younger.
Very cool. Your son will appreciate the rare back issues more when he is older, but its neat he can relate to super heroes now. Thx for sharing your back ground. I know many of us old timers always wonder if another generation will rise up with an appreciation for comics. Buying a mega silver key as first comics does make more sense w your background as a baseball card collector. I knew the movies would bring it some folks, but figured it would take several years before someone would grow accustom to spending a few thousand on old news print. Well Congrats again! and Hold on to it.

Had to put my 7.0 up for auction due to financial reasons, please remove me from the club
Sorry to hear. It happens to us all at some point. Look at the positive side, at least with our hobby you can cash out for emergency situations and always buy back in later. Imagine some hobbies like cars, boats, big vacations etc. will leave a person w nothing to show.

Not to be a taskmaster, but there was a reason why I asked for the least favorite of the regular EC artists. Obviously, people like Roussos and Harrison would slot in at #1 on just about everybody's list of least favorites if we included everybody who ever worked for EC.
I love Krigstein, but the problem is his unusual style wasn't really suited to EC's typical stuff, or comics in general! But it worked superbly on offbeat things like "Master Race" and "The Flying Machine."
Hard for me to play arm chair quarterback to Feldstein and Kurtzman as editors assigning stories to fit style as they put more energy into comics that 95% of the market. But you make a good point, that not every artist could hit the mark each time or was appropriate for each genre.. example: Kamen on Horror.
Seems to me that the horror/Crime books faded toward the end, while the Sci-fi were the cream of quality. I think for me, the early era was the "appeal", and as you move into 1954, the stable of artist begins to change so that the comic style I like in early Craig and Feldstein are replaced w the refined Crandell, Krigstein, Harrison, etc. who are good in their own right, but just not the distinctive "classic" material that got me "hooked".
-
George Roussos, now better known as an inker, did the art on a few stories at EC. Didn't like them much.
+1
Huh, Kurtzman is my least favorite, followed by Krigstein.Blasphemy sir, blasphemy!
One of the EC "what ifs" I'd hope for would have been more Krigstein stories.
I never cared for Krigstein, Elder, or Kurtzman, although reading them 25 yrs later I think I enjoy all of them now at some level. My taste have changed some, but Craig, Feldstein, Wood, and Williamson are top Dog for me.
-
EC's are the bomb! No one else produced books like theirs in the 50's. simply the best there was.
Except Hillman. They may not have had Wood or Williamson, but w great stories and B+ art, they ran a good race.

It was tough to let go Oak but needed to do since I'm mainly a GA guy
Wow that was a beauty DK. Ya know... I have seen it time and time again.. people always come back to big Silver.... resistance is futile.
love it!!
and all good Brian, i'm sure the proceeds from your 8.5 sale went towards some other great books!
It did Joe and I'm proud of it!
All kidding aside, there are 3 GA books that could cause me to part w a high grade TOS39 - MF52, Adv40, or Tec29 Those are so hard to find, unlikely Id ever have to eat crow for teasing you.

I spent a LOT of time staring at that endpaper when I was a kid. Schomberg, and it was in every St John first edition for years.
It would seem, so did some one at Pixar.... that space man embodies the looks of Bud Light Year

Overstreet states that the first five "FLYING SAUCER ISSUES" were:
1- The SPIRIT Section (9/28/47)
2- SHADOW COMICS V7 #10 (1/48)
3- CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT #60 (2/48)
4- BOY COMMANDOS #26 (3-4/48)
5- FOUR-COLOR #190 (6/48)
In going through my collection I see I have copies of #3 and #5.
Unless there is already one posted, "FLYING SAUCER COVERS" could be a thread of it's own.
mm
Now that you mention it, Flying Saucers were a very significant theme in entertainment for years. You should have the honors to start one... I would enjoy it.

I remember seeing the first EC's on the newsstand and realizing
that they were different...besides a lot of them had stories by RAY
BRADBURY and that was enough for me to buy them. Many of the
EC's I picked up were remainder copies for 5 cents each.
This was one of my first...
mm
You bought that off the newstand and still have it!
Here is my copy, but I paid more than 5 cents.

is this thread exclusively for recent acquisitions (2904 pages later), or is it appropriate to post assorted keys, cool covers, etc. that i've had for a while?
if there's a "post your assorted keys, cool covers, etc." thread, i haven't seen it yet, so please point me to it if it exists!
The spirit of this thread is recent acquisitions. Most others are split across publishers: the Centaur thread you know, Fiction House, EC, Atlas, MLJ, Timely, Ducks, Western, Atomic Age, Cap, Supes ... but in proper form, there are no DC dedicated thread
Post them here; nobody'll mind.
Well, we do have the Batman/Detective thread, and the Flash journal thread
But you are right, we do need a "show me your GA DC thread"
We also have the adventure comics thread. It hasn't had any love recently.
