If you don't know the answer, I don't need to explain it (exposure, hype, name recognition, readers, sales, market share, etc., etc., etc.) You realize that image only gets the money from initial sales right? After its been covered on their end it starts to line others pockets. Gaining readership is one thing but these "speculators and flippers" reap the majority of these benefits. The idea is to increase over all demand - it's a long-term investment for image. Yes, I realize image doesn't get the lions share on these books, but you CAN'T BUY THIS TYPE OF EXPOSURE. Priceless. We are talking about it. Image is a Are we on the same page now?

On the whole (Tim), I agree variants suck for collectors (we have to spend more money). However, creating something rare also creates demand. Demand creates interest. Interest generates readers. Readers generate sales. Sales cure all evils (while creating a whole batch of new ones).

Ah, manipulation at it's finest. I thought this has been going on already. Funny... I was watching Jon Stewart last night and his guest - Helaine Olen - was talking about how a news/commentator can mention a stock (positive or negative) and it will go up almost immediately and then cool off two weeks later. She also talks about $ manipulation by 401k managers. Interesting I wonder if comics do this....
