That sounds like a unicorn. I've had it happen with Val Semeiks on an inking commission and Tim Truman came through two full months(and I was quoted three months total) ahead of schedule, but that seems pretty quick imo.

How long are commissions on average? I've only had one and it was finished in around 3 weeks to a month?

In any case, while I believe that the OA market will soften during the next recession, I think it is more likely that any economic-related downturn will prove to be cyclical.  It's the secular tipping point caused by aging/demographic changes that I am more worried about (which hopefully is still a decade or more away).  I'm confident we'll see a softening of Byrne X-Men cover prices by then...but will any of us be young enough to still care?

Have you experienced and seen younger collectors entering the market? I've seen a large amount of younger ones myself from sites like Twiter and Instagram but not sure if they seem to deal exclusively with modern art and artists and would have an interest in older art pieces. Either because they have no connection to it, too pricey for them, or because they wouldn't care about artists from the period that weren't famous now or did A ranked titles.

  3. 300K for the "Hook" Movie poster. Poor nostalgia movie for me. I remember watching it on VHS a lot as a kid. The, "An American Tale" poster is another piece that would be a buy out of nostalgia for me. As others have mentioned they do seem to have an issue saying whether or not if these are all the published image. Not to mention that they don't seem to list a distinction between prelim drawings and the final image.

  4. This isn't a new practice for dealers but bring up the interesting point where a lot of times "new" inventory that dealers will have is stuff people can recognize as recently being in an auction a few weeks or months back. You can even see a few pieces that were in the last Heritage auction up on their walls in the pics for SDCC that I recognize. Do they believe that they got a good deal on the piece with it selling under FMV? Or do they just believe that if they hold on to it long enough that the market will eventually catch up to their asking price, or hope that someone like the underbidder from the auction comes by and just has to have it? I could also see these pieces used as trade pieces where they argue them being worth more than what they sold for.

Been trying out camscanner app. I use android - it creates pdfs.  If there is a setting to have the images come out as jpegs - would love to know. Updated a bunch of CAF art already.

With respect to the comment that lighting/shadows is tricky - I usedthe setting to have the flash/torch on. I put the art vertical on my desk, leaning to the wall and shot the pictures.  A real pleasure to see the app adjust the image so it flattens out.

I noticed that. My method was to click on share and after picking the image option just send it to myself through one of the other apps on my phone.  Text or email it to yourself for example. My choice is to use discord since I can just send it to my own server on there and download it on to my computer.

    What’s the tax for PA

From my experience dealing with Comiclink they seem to round the sales tax. I'm also going by the local sales tax where they hold their auctions in these states.

    California 9.5%

    Hawaii 4%

    Illinois 6.25%

    Kentucky 6%

    Maine 5.5%

    Minnesota 6.875%

    Mississippi  7%

    New Jersey 7%

    New York 8.8%

    Ohio  5.7%

    Pennsylvania 6%

    Texas 8.25%

ROM is not a Marvel property, it's owned by Hasbro and that movie is being developed at Paramount.  They are also making movies out of other Hasbro properties (Micronauts and new G.I. Joe movies) and if successful will likely tie them all into a shared Hasbro Universe.  Seriously.  On the GOTG front, James Gunn's firing will not stop Disney from making more GOTG movies, or from expanding the cosmic corner of the MCU.  They have a blueprint and will plug new writers or directors into that blueprint; how that affects perceived quality of those properties is something for consumers to decide but I don't for a second believe there won't be a GOTG3.

Has it been decided who owns the Dire Wraiths or are Marvel and Hasbro still in a legal battle over it? I don't really know how a ROM movie could be made without the characters and other things developed by Marvel since they are part of what made so many people like the series in the first place. It's also interesting to point out that for toy tie-in comic, that ROM was intertwined with the Marvel universe to a large extent.

  8. With James Gunn getting fired and the belief that this means no Guardians of the Galaxy 3, does this also extend to the hope of a ROM movie? A --script was being made for it it seems, but nothing new has been heard for months. Gunn did say before that he did show interest in doing the movie so it's hard to say how much of the effort for a ROM movie was pushed by him and if it dies with him after his firing. Cosmic Marvel as a whole should be fine though with Thanos, however.

I am bummed to see that Heritage is going to charge Sales Tax on Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio, and Pennsylvania - starting August 1st

As a PA resident, this will seriously impact my bidding.

How do you guys in states already paying sales tax (in TX, NY?) deal with this? Do you take it into consideration while bidding?

As a New Jersey resident who had this introduced to us a few months back and also has the same issue with Clink, welcome to the club. On a serious note, yeah factor that in when you bid. If you have friends or family that live in a none taxed state that you trust, you can also have the pieces mailed to them to avoid the tax.

This has always been a handicap for people in taxed States since we've had to bid above FMV of an art piece just to have a FMV bid on it at auction. This can be really painful once it starts to get to a few grand. Another thing you can consider is the spread the money pain out by working out a time payment with them before if you plan to spend an extra thousand which helps if you would have had the money if not for the extra tax.

Hypothetical... What would happen if I launched a Kickstarter to buy the McFarlane DPS at CLINK (a Copper piece whose demographic still has some collecting years left) and each supporter would get a proportional piece of a blockchain for just that piece of art?

There would be too many problems such as who would hold on to the art? Could one investor buyout another's share? When would people agree to sell?

It reminds me of that guy who wanted to get investors to buy those Jim Lee trading cards from Moy so he would be able to keep one since he couldn't afford to buy them himself. People brought up the issue of how the cards would be distributed since some characters would be worth more than others.

  11. This was a thing that some people tried to do a few years back. I think it was posted in comic general but can't seem to find it. The guy had two comics that people could buy a share of and you would be given, I think, "comic coins". It went as well as you would expect it to on the boards.

This was a very good San Diego Comic-Con in my opinion.  I felt that there was a lot more new material this time around (note: just because pieces showed up at the L.A. show the prior weekend doesn't mean it wasn't still fresh to most SDCC attendees a few days later!), certainly a lot more than last year which was very much the same-old, same-old.  Various dealers pulled out some new material for the show, and then Mitch had a lot of all-new consignments and Nick K brought hundreds of his pages to the show from his collection.  There were a couple of major collectors showing things privately; one had two twice-up Kirby covers for sale, while another had a lot of good Bronze/Copper stuff, including the DD #160 cover (which CLink bought to put in their August auction from what I was told),

Sounds like my type of scene. hm

DP Jr, I'm afraid you are conflating the recent Frankenstein: Alive, Alive! project with Wrightson's seminal original Frankenstein book that was published in 1983.

Unless I'm off base here, and I doubt I am, the new IDW AE Frankenstein book being discussed in this thread is the original material created for that 1980s edition of Frankenstein. People have been clamoring for that work to see an AE edition as long as the format has existed. It was not comics pages, but rather book plates that illustrated scenes from the original Shelley novel.

The project Jones discusses with Cyberfrog guy in the video you posted, is the Frankenstein: Alive, Alive! comic that was left uncomplete when Bernie passed away. He actually handed the torch to Jones and requested he finish by inking the project so it could be released. It was puplished by IDW, but this AE is totally different content and 3 decades older. There are many incompleted original Frankenstein plates out there, but Kelley's never touched one to ink, that I'm aware of. I doubt he would if asked, since it wouldn't be Bernie asking him to.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks for the correction.

Could someone educate me on this please?

The original apparently had 47 "plates" but there were several (exact number = ? Anyone know?) plates that were either not included or were left unfinished (is this correct? Are these referred to as the "Lost" plates"?)

How many of the 47 published plates and the unused, unfinished plates will appear in this volume?  Are all of the plates in this volume sourced from the original art?  If not, what are the other sources?  Will the plates in this volume be the same size as the original art?  Was the art ever published in colour?

    Thanks!

Artist, Kelly Jones was given them with Wrightson wanting him to finish his work when he knew he would be unable to himself. You can actually see them with Kelly in an early video upload by Ethan Van Sciver when his Youtube channel was still more comic based when he interviewed Kelly Jones for it.  Even if you don't like him I recommend watching it. It's a pretty good video where KJ talks about a lot of how he got into comics, his start and how Marshal Rogers even gave him a small drawing lesson when he was a teenager at a convention. He shows the Frankenstein stuff at around 1 hour 30 minute mark.

  15. First off is the cover to Deadpool #15 vol.2 done by the talented, Jason Pearson. I really loved the covers he did for this series and had been wanting to add one to collection for a while. So when I saw it in the auction preview on Comiclink some months back I told myself I would get it!

Next up is another Deadpool cover also from volume 2. This is to issue 35 which was I was really excited to see when it came up for sale since it was one of my favorite covers for the series and I had always wanted to own. Just like the with the other cover I got into the mindset where I told myself I needed to win it or I would be regretting it for a long time.

Getting these two covers was great, not only because they were pieces I really wanted but because I hadn't gotten any deadpool related stuff for a while at that point and had even sold my 9.8 copy of NM98 a year before. If you don't know I really like that character, lol.

Another interesting thing happened, I got my first commission! My idea for a commsion had been a moon Knight piece with the artist giving there own take on Sienks well-known Fist of Konshu painted cover. I had been trying to decide which artist to get for a while, and had finally decided on, Jeff Slemons who advetizes on Comicartfans. After looking at his work examples I and the price for them I couldn't help but reach out and work out a deal. My first commission expereince turned out great with, Jeff staying in contact and showing my different sketches he did for the idea, with my piece being finished and delivered in one month.

For the last highlight I was fortunante enough to get a piece with pencils done by the recently passed, Steve Ditko (RIP). I feel really lucky that I was able to get a piece by such an artist and important figure in the comic industry/history. The artwork also being a from his time onn, ROM Spaceknight which is a title I love with the artwork showing an important scene from the final issue #75 making it all the more special to me.

  16. A lot has happened in these few months since my last post in terms of collecting and a believe an update is in order.

Since my last post, my comic art collection has been reduced in size with me selling some pieces I thought I never would that were hallmarks of my collecting interest. This ranges from my Bill Sienkiewicz Moon Knight page, my John Buscema Avengers page of Kang's origin retold, and my Kirby page to name a few. I could go on but I think these get the point across.

This was a hard decision to make for sure but a few months ago I had the chance to make a grail level piece for me a reality and needed to raise the funds. I'm sure most people ask themselves or at least heard the scenrio of if they would trade or sell their collection if it meant they would be able to own a certain piece or comic. For me, while it might not be my whole collection I it was stil some of my best pieces.

If everything goes as planned I should have the item in hand by around September and will be sure to post it here for you guys.

In other news I was also able to add a few pieces to my collection. Some have already been sold since I needed to funds as explained above which was a downer for sure (especially since I lost dollar wise :( ) But was also able to hold on to some :) which I'll be posting.
