Now Stroman is doing these 11x17 sketches that he puts up for sale on various FB groups and such. They are pretty nice and I know better than to commission him, but I thought surely he won't have an issue with an already finished piece. So I replied, he told me where to Paypal the money and I sent it immediately. With shipping it was only $90, so I figured it was worth the risk even knowing his reputation on commissions because I liked the art. But sure enough, I never heard from him again. I messaged through the FB group sale listing, direct to him, and through his Paypal email address. He never responded to any of them and never mailed the art. Someone in the FB mentioned to me that they had to initiate a Paypal refund to get him to mail out their art, so right around 45 days since payment was sent and no word ever received, I initiated a Paypal dispute. Literally the next morning I got a FB Messenger photo of the shipping receipt with the tracking info and he mailed it. So I did get it and close the dispute, but without the ability to threaten to take the money back I doubt I ever would have seen my piece. I even watched him mock a guy he never delivered to on his FB page as the guy was trying everything. So unless you simply "have to have" something by him and see him in person at a con and buy something in a portfolio that is already done and right in front of you, just avoid any deals with him. He straight out doesn't care.

Those facebook groups should kick him so he can't screw people over like that.

Looks like serendipity hasn’t been on these boards for a year and a half. So they may not be involved with Larry, now... their comments are rather old

I remember checking their site a while back and coming across what they call a "60-day commission guarantee"

    http://serendipityartsales.com/60-day-guarantee/

    from the link

    Quote

In an effort to protect both artists and clients, I spoke with my clients as well as other artists and have come up with a new commission policy.

We’ve eliminated all risk on the collector’s part while at the same time protecting my artists.

The key to a successful and fun commission experience is communication.

This new policy stresses regular communication throughout the process.

The following policy would apply for all artists represented by Serendipity
    Art Sales.

    1. 100% free to be on wait list. – Client can be added to any of our artist’s wait list with absolutely no money and no commitment.

    2. When the artist is ready to begin piece, payment is due in full from the client.

    3. Payment will be held in escrow by Serendipity Art Sales. The artist receives payment when the commission is complete!

    4. Commissions will be completed within 60 days of payment or client will be offered a chance to cancel the commission and receive a FULL REFUND. *

    5. Client has the option to waive the refund and grant an extension. Extensions will be granted in 14 day blocks. After each 14 day extension, the client will have the option to cancel their order and receive a full refund if the art is still not complete.

    6. Any special requests for the commissions must be made before the work begins, such as costumes, settings, etc.  This is the stage to make sure the artist understands what the client want.

    7. It will be up the artists discretion if they want to send out a preliminary sketch for the client’s approval.  Once they’ve approved this prelim any major changes will not be possible. **

    8. Upon completion, a scan/photo of artwork will be sent to the client and your artwork will be shipped! ***

    * 60 day completion guarantee only applies to standard size (up to 11×17) pieces with no more than four characters. Larger or more complex pieces will have a negotiated completion date.

** All delay time incurred during approval stages is added to the 60 day finish date.

*** All preliminary work/sketches will be retained by artist unless otherwise agreed upon.

    11

So according to point 3 on their site, Larry can only rip people off if they go through him directly but not his art rep since they hold the money and refund it if he doesn't complete it in the agreed upon timeframe.

    Congratulations! This is fantastic!

I always wondered on big ticket items, do you trust the mail system or prefer face to face transactions?

Thanks. I was nervous about having it sent through the mail even though the seller told me they had it insured but was lucky that we both lived relatively close to each other. After I had sent the payment we worked it out and agreed to meet at a public place that was equal distance from each other which ended up being a McDonald's.

    No and no.

I bought the art from him in 2003.

It's really interesting when you think about the art that some artists still have that has been held on to for decades. They could have sold it all in the 70's or 80s but held on to it where now if they want to sell they'd might be able to make more selling a single complete story than what their yearly salary at the big two was.

  5. Hello

2018 was the year in which I was able to acquire pieces which I never thought possible before... mostly by selling pieces I never thought I would. It was hard for sure but think I did the right thing since I never would have been able to get what I consider a grail any other way. It really allowed me to evolve as a collector and really put quality over quantity.

I'll have my submissions and their descriptions in a spoiler tag so they don't take up a lot of room.

    Spoiler

First on the list is the Cover to Beasts of Burden #2. I consider this one of my luckiest gets since the story in this is one that I and likely anyone who has read the series thinks of as having the biggest impact on them. When I saw it available for sale I just had to get it.

    976444493_BeastsofBurden2Cover.jpg.aff751dd9ae48a7dbd1e9f9842d98bce.jpg

#2 on the list is a page from the final issue of ROM Spaceknight with pencils by the late Steve Ditko who passed away in 2018. In this page, you can see the conclusion to ROM's final battle where Dominor commits suicide with ROM's neutralizer after being unable to achieve his goal.

#3 is another cover by Jason Pearson who did this great cover of Deadpool volume 2 #15. I really loved his style when he did covers for this series and had wanted one for a while.

#4 is another ROM page but this time from the first ever issue. page 2 issue 1 to be precise. In this, we can see ROM right after he landed on Earth and the first ever appearance of Brandy Clark who would become a major character and ROM's love interest in the series.

Finally for my last submission is a grail of mine. The first-ever appearance of ROM Spaceknight, the title splash page to issue 1 of the series which was also used as an ad for the series before it was released. 1234916420_RomSpaceKnight1pg.1TitleSplashoriginal.thumb.png.aa525768229649bc6e2302fc7307a736.png

  6. Very sad news. People, of course, knew it was coming, especially with his age and reports of failing health but doesn't make it easier once it happens. He did have issues and controversy surrounding him which we all know about but he also did a lot in helping shape the Marvel universe into what it is today. Acting as what we would now call a brand ambassador he did a lot which helped get it into the mainstream and keep the hobby relevant. For that I say thanks, and rest in peace.

    Freakin sweet pages. :golfclap:

I can’t believe you sold off a majority of your pages though. Don’t you have a really great collection???

Thanks, yeah I like to think I do (or did, lol) but needed to raise the funds. It was hard for sure, selling some pieces I never thought I would but was able to keep some of my favorites at least. I think it was worth it though since I felt I could replace those other items eventually while on the other hand, there's only so many #1 pages from ROM. I mean I actually dreamed about owning these pages from when I read the comic so actually being able to get them was basically a dream come true. I was also able to get a grail piece which called for special actions to be taken.

Funny stuff re: Essington today. Has anybody actually met him, does he exist or is this a phantom account/name for somebody none of would otherwise do business out of the gate?

I've seen him on Instagram where he was also listed a ROM page I had sold on comiclink. doh! He also seems to deal in selling comics on there.

When I asked about reserves, they said they dont do it for less than 1K, and would also refuse to have it if the reserve makes no sense (relative to what they perceive as the value)

I remember seeing a piece with a reserve price of $500 a few years back.

  10. Hi, I have a few pieces in the current auction with them ending for next week. Many of which are pieces I never thought I would be selling, from my Kubert cover to my Sienksmoon Knight piece. Feel free to take a look, something might grab your eye.

Moon Knight by #15. pg.4 Bill S. Was hard to sell this one http://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fauctions_first.asp&id=1260450

New Teen Titans by George Perez #20 pg.5 Cool scene with both Beast Boy and Cyborg http://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fauctions_first.asp&id=1260452

G.I Combat #276 cover by Joe Kubert. Great cover by a great artist in the genre he left a mark on. http://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fauctions_first.asp&id=1260457

Kamandi the Last Boy on Earth #33 pg.7 by Jack Kirby. Really cool action scene drawn by the King himself. http://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fauctions_first.asp&id=1260455

Marvel Fanfare #43 backcover of the human Torch by Howard Chaykin. I made collecting pin-up of this title one of my collecting and if you see it you'll understand why. http://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fauctions_first.asp&id=1260456

Avengers #269 pg.6 by John Buscema. An awesome page telling the origin of Kang the Conqueror, just look at that face shot panel.  http://www.comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fauctions_first.asp&id=1260453

  11. I see Hulk #1 as one of the top three most valuable silver age marvel books when it comes to first appearances of heroes or number ones. The other two are AF15 and ASM1. Considering what even a low copy of Hulk 1 is going for I would get it if possible if it won't cost you much out of pocket. Even though the IH181 is also on fire and appreciating in value at a high rate it will still cost you less than the number 1 and is much more easier to replace.

  12. I'm really interested in how these two junkies got the idea in the first place to break into the Marvel warehouse? Out of everything they could have picked they chose that and taking oa that many people didn't see as valuable? Really makes me wonder if these two had been involved in comics in anyway that might have influenced them into picking it.

I vaguely recall Sal being discussed as if a redheaded stepchild on the Comicart-L in the early days. Among discussions of Diko, and Kirby, Romita and John, folks mentioned Sal in the same way they mentioned Sad Sack art. Appreciation of his work seems to have risen dramatically in the years since, anecdotally speaking, and from what I see people write about him.

My only direct experience with Sal was that, like Stan Lee and a number of other folks, he had a knack at the time for signing OA in a way that could make you regret asking in the first place, if you weren't careful. I wasn't careful. But he was certainly a nice guy when I talked with him. The signature regret set in later.

...I tried to find my old Rom page on CAF, but I didn't see it in a quick search, but here's an example of the sort of thing I mean. Not mine of course...

I'm sure some folks would be totally cool with it. Me, it drove nuts.

I believe that when the pages to ROM 1 were sold earlier this year that he signed all of them also. I'm glad he'll at least think about where he'll place his signature and not just write it on a character's head.

Yes, I know this is in the shallow end of the pool.  However, whomever bought the McGuinness 5 Ronin Deadpool cover got it at a nice price.  The style McGuinness used on that cover reflected how he used to draw the character when he first started working in comics in the 1990's.

I had remembered that piece switching hands a few times a few years back and was interested when it came up again at auction but decided I needed to be frugal. From what I can remember the price it sold for was only $25-50 more than it sold for last time.

Said it before, and I'll say it again.  I don't sense that CAF drives traffic the way it used to.  The numbers seem to be way, way down.

That said, I think it would make sense to hit everything from Facebook groups, to Instagram and beyond.

Where are you seeing older comic art on Instagram? I know that it's big for modern/ well-known artists in the industry and their art reps but haven't seen much if at all for other stuff that many here would be interested in from an older time period.
