  1. About 10 years ago I found several low-grade Charlton early 70's romance comics at a used book store. I bought them under the pretense that I could sell them for more on eBay and "make a little money". Very little in fact, probably just broke even. But I didn't mind. Even though I don't really have any interest in romance comics the cover art was so cool, the dialog so corny, and there's something about Charlton's in general, I just couldn't leave them sitting there.
  2. I know Charlton's get dismissed as "drek" but in my experience it's not easy putting a high-grade run together. It took me 8 years to finally complete this run in high-grade 9.4 - 9.6
  3. I grew up in a small farming community so the comics that were available at the grocery and drug stores in my hometown were the standard DC/Marvel/Archie issues. But when we would go on vacation or a day trip sometimes we would stop at a convenience store like 7-11 in the "big" town of Fresno and that's when I would come across stuff I didn't usually see. It was on one of those stops that I picked this up, my one and only Charlton off the rack. I didn't usually go for the funny animal stuff but there was something about the company logo and the art style that spoke to me. And I remember the story actually being fairly decent too.
  4. I think you're misinterpreting his "done". You were looking for a 9.8 copy and when he initially contacted you the book was still at CGC and hadn't yet had the grade finalized. His "done" meant the grading was complete, it is in fact a 9.8, and is now on it's way to MCS.
  5. Well there goes any chance of getting a 9.6 #168 for under $400 any time soon. While I wouldn't say this casting "perfect", I certainly like it much better than Jenifer Garner as Elektra.
  6. It seems here in this area A&W hasn't fared too well in the fast food wars. I think there's only one left here in town. And that's sad because A&W root beer freshly made and on tap at the restraunt is the absolute best. I don't know why that franchise has done so poorly here. Their burgers are a lot tastier than much of their competition too.
  7. Now that's a cool poster! Is that an official poster or fan-made one? I wish they would use this for the the official poster instead of the Iron Man-clone one. I understand positive association and riding coat tails, but I think this movie needs to celebrate the difference.
  8. I just had a Batman #400 done (still at CGC) with the signatures on the back. Back cover is a duplicate "virgine" image of the front cover so there's some blank areas where the front cover copy would go, perfect place for signatures, that way the sigs aren't competing with the text on the front cover. Don't know what the hard-core SS guys would think of it, but it made sense to me.
  9. That's what I like about it. It's set apart by its pacing, and I think that creates a wonderful atmosphere around the film. Exactly. Everything else at the time - Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Black Hole, etc. - they were all trying to copy Star Wars. ST:TMP went in a different direction and while it may not be to everyone's tastes it does stand above all the copycats of the time.
  10. You're not alone. It's one of my favorites too. Part of it is probably nostalgia. It came out when I was about 8 and I had grown up watching the show in re-runs so the movie was a pretty big deal. But even now I still really like it. I think it's one the most "theatrical" of the original films - the one that most lookes like a big-budget movie. I remember reading somewhere - think it was one of Nemoy's memoirs - that for Wrath the bumped down to filming on a T.V. studio lot, and you can spot where they recycled sets from TMP. As good as some of those latter films were, you got the instinctive feeling that Parmount was cutting corners. That's one thing I'll give the re-boot films, they definately brought back the polished, big-budget feel to the franchise.
  11. Absolutely love this movie. When I first bought a DVD player and started converting over to DVDs it was one the first movies I bought. Now that I have a blu-ray player, I got the restored version on blu-ray. I haven't had a chance to re-watch it yet, but my wife and sons watched it and they were very impressed with the picture quality. They were a bit surprised at how much more of Krissy they were able to see. I didn't see it in the theatre - thank goodness, I was only 3 at the time. But I do remember watching it on T.V. As much as I love the ocean and going to the coast, I can't get more than ankle deep in the surf . While the death of Quint made a big impression on me as a kid, I think the part that freaks me out is the part when the swimmer is trying to help the kids get their boat started, the camera moves to a bird's-eye view and you see the shark coming up underneath him. If I ever saw that in real life I'd die of a heart attack on the spot. I have to take exception with the comments that it's "slow in parts" and "dated". I guess it depends your attention span, but to me the "slow parts" are good actors giving great performances, it's a pleasure to watch. A favorite scene is when Scheider is acting (but not over-acting) drunk, sullen and depressed, slowly pealing the label from a bottle while theorizing about what the shark will do next. And other than trivial things like cars and clothes, I don't see anything that excessively dates it, certainly not to the point you can't enjoy it today. I did get to finally listen to the book on CD, initially was very excited about it, but as others have said, the book is VERY different. I was extremely disappointed with it. One of the few times the movie is vastly superior to the book.
  12. I've actually never read it. I was reading something somewhere - here on the boards, and issue of Back Issue, Overstreet, etc. - about Mark Schultz and this series was mentioned. I collected comics in the '80s so I was vaguely aware of him from C&D and a couple of the cards he did for Star Wars Galaxy. But never actually picked up and read anything he did. Anyway, when reading whatever it was it struck me how much his art is like Dave Stevens, I really kind of liked it. And I've always liked anything related to the ocean. But then I just never got around to looking for it at the time and when I started thinking about it again I couldn't remember the title or what I had read to spark my interest. I'll have to check it out.
  13. Subhuman, that's it! Thanks, that was driving me crazy!
  14. I know this Xenozoic thread, but I've got a quick Mark Schultz question. Somewhere I stumbled across a short series that Schultz did (pretty sure it was Schultz) that was more sci-fi themed, I think it even had an underwater theme. But now, for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the series. Anyone know what this series since?
  15. Because it looks like Iron-Man lite?
  16. +1 Or find one of those postal kiosks that are run out of another business? I go to a USPS counter at the back of mobile pager store about 2 blocks from my house, much better experience than going to the actual post office.
  17. Click on "Site Map" which is at the bottom of your My eBay Summery Page. Under the tab "Seller Activities" there's the tab "Blocked Bidder/Buyer List". Click on that and then copy/past the user name into the field provided. It's case specific so the user name has to be exactly as it appears in eBay - capitalization, punctuation, etc. If there's a more direct way to get to the Blocked Bidder list I don't know of it. Maybe somebody else does.
  18. I don't know anything, this would just be my guess as to how these characters play out: Elektra: if she appears (and I'm not entirely convinced she will), she'll be handled like Clair Temple - appears in the better part of 3 or 4 episodes, slated more towards the end of the season, appears in costume in the season finale. Bullseye: this is the villain that will major development during the course of the season, my guess would be more front-loaded at the beginning of the season. Punisher: like Stick in season 1, he has a 1-2 episode story line. That's it. Stick/the Hand: again, these will probably be a 1-3 episode story line, placed towards the end of the season and facilitating the entrance of Elektra. Owl: like Elektra, I'm not convinced he'll appear, but if he does, I think the majority of it will be out of costume i.e. not a super-powered villain, probably a lot of conflict between him and the Kingpin spilling over from the events of the previous season Gladiator: Melvin will make a couple of appearances but I seriously doubt we'll see in suit up
  19. To the bolded part: a-frikin'-men, brother. And I'm inclined to agree with the rest too.
  20. Question: For those of you who have built the Aurora kits and the like, what type/brand of putty do you use to fill the seams? I've been using the Testors putty since I was a teenager and I absolutely hate the stuff, it's total rubbish. There has to be something better. Otherwise, model building is going to be too much aggrevation for me.
  21. I'm not an expert on PEZ either, but out of curiosity I checked a price guide out from the library years ago. From what I remember the Univeral monster dispensers are very desirable/collectible. Finding one with the cardboard costume isn't something you stumble across everyday either. I couldn't give you an idea of market value, but I think it's safe to say for $10 you did extremely well!
  22. Jimmy's in Canada. If he's shipping to someone in the U.S. then no, not really. edit to add: just checked the users profile and he is in NY.
  23. This is the foundation of my earlier comments about pursuit of the PL being a "hard- line" to take in this situation. I was never arguing that buyers should be held to lower standards, in general. I believe buyers should go above and beyond to honor their commitments, just as sellers should. I'm just in the camp that thinks there was some misunderstanding here, which I tend to give benefit of the doubt on... Isn't the objective of the PL to work out problem transactions, including ones of miscommunication? And again, where is the requirement that there be "sinister or malicious intent" in order for PL nomination to be valid? No. O.k., I'm out.

  25. Like I said - I'd have to see the initial PM exchange. Did bcc say he was or was not familiar with shipping packages to the UK? bcc: Sure, $450 works, but I can't cover shipping costs. I haven't shipped a lot of things overseas, but I've heard it's expensive. I can cover $20 but I'm worried it could be much more: even $40 - $60. Xela: No worries, I've bought from numerous people and it's always cost me around $25. ......... Completed deal with clear and specific terms? Yes/no? Communication was clearly lacking on both sides because when the terms did became clear: bcc: I just got back from USPS (or looked online). I was told it's going to be $63 shipped. PayPal me and I'll have it shipped. Xela: Woh! Why so much? Like I said, I was thinking it was $25? bcc: You're responsible for insurance. If you want to forgo insurance, I can ship the book cheaper, but you're on the hook if it gets lost. Xela: thanks, but I'll respectfully pass. Probation List worthy? I agree that the PMs haven't been shown so we can't know for sure. Our comments are based solely on bcc's overview of the exchange. However, the part in bold is something that you're inserting in the time frame at a point where - according to bcc - that statement hadn't been made yet. I agree that IF Xela made that statement at that point it would change things. But according to bcc, he didn't.
