  1. The first on is interesting to me because of the political incorrectness: "Be the master, not the slave." The 2nd one (or one very similar) was on the back of a Super Duck I used to own. I thought it was interesting that you could buy fountain pen ink in 12 different colors in the old days. The third one I've never owned, but I think it's cool. It's on the back of More Fun 97 and probably others. (I also like the Wheaties ad that shows some masks that you can cut out from the backs of Wheaties boxes. I'm not sure what books it's on, but I know I've seen it quite a few times. I'd consider going after a book with that ad just for the ad!)
  2. This one is technically an Axis cover, since it takes place in "Tojo's Torture Den."
  3. Pining for a book like that could drive a guy to throw himself off a cliff.
  4. Nice book! I'll bet it's glossy as all get out.
  5. I agree. I think prices on the "hot" books will eventually come back down to Overstreet. I prefer to think he's low on some books, though. (I think the books I've paid the most over guide for are my Catman 13, my Seven Seas 4, and my Fight 20 - so I stubbornly refuse to admit that he may be right about those, too.)
  6. It is nice, but it appears to be a Guy Holcomb book, so it's sort of a shame that it was cleaned; at least the name wasn't completely removed.
  7. I wonder if the babe with the glasses is supposed to be someone in particular!
  8. Nice pick-up! I had my eye on that one early on, but I couldn't hang.
  9. 9.2 to 7.5 slide? Bad press damage? What happened? bad press that split spine a bit [font:Times New Roman]Nope. I've never owned that book, but I was offered it. I'll PM you & Jimbo with the details. Trust me, the damage wasn't due to mishandling or a bad crack & press job.[/font] 1. Mishandling? No. 2. Bad press? No. 3. Exposure to cosmic rays! Apparently the book became damaged in shipping at some point because the earliest CGC holders, like the one it was in, permitted some movement of the books. I think that design flaw was fixed pretty early on, but not quite early enough to save this book. And it's not a bad book, so "ruined" was probably too strong a term. I'm really just frustrated that I didn't buy it back in the Nick Cage auction, when it first caught my eye. Interesting. Thanks for the info. Something bad seems to have happened near the top staple. The date of the slab was 8/17/2002, right before the Nick Cage auction. I think they had tightened up the slabs somewhat by then. (My oldest slab is dated 5/5/2000, and it looks like there's a plastic shim in there to keep that book in place!) It's possible that the Catman 26 wasn't cut perfectly rectangular, and that some gaps around it allowed the pages to slide away from the cover, causing a tear at the upper staple. (I think the CGC now actually forms the inner well to the shape of the comic, even if the comic isn't perfectly rectangular.)

  11. it's actually one of the more common catman issues. I'm sure there is a higher grade out there but still probably not a "nice" as the MH copy Thanks!
  12. Gator, I passed this book by a couple of different times when it was a 9.2 but then bought it as a 7.5, after someone had ruined it. Will I ever-find a higher-grade copy? PS - Why doesn't the Golden Age Flash's hat fall off his head when he runs?
  13. I think my favorite robot cover is Mystery Men #2, simply because of the amazing color design. I'm a little disappointed that I don't see one in the thread. I wish I owned one to post!
  14. That's one more I don't recall ever seeing! That seems to happen a lot in this thread. Nice pick up!
  15. The book arrived today, so apparently not all consignment listings are obsolete. (Who knew?) I wanted one Crowley File Copy for my collection, and now I have one.
  16. Nice book! I had my eye on that one but didn't end up bidding (only because of my tight budget).
  17. Spokane colors seem richer than nearly all other pedigrees...just my two cents. Could be! I haven't owned enough pedigree books to make a call. I've read that Spokane, Vancouver, Central Valley, Okajima, San Francisco, and White Mountain are all generally pretty fresh. I always hear that Mile Highs are the crème de la crème, but the few I've owned have not quite lived up to the hype (although they're still pretty nice).
  18. Jimbo that book has been pressed has it not? I hope not! It is possible based on the recent slab date. I don't have the book in hand yet; I asked Heritage to wait to ship it because it's extremely hot in Texas this time of year, and I didn't want it baking in the back of a FedEx truck. I thought 0006 books were the ones that had gone through ccs paper first? Or is that some other tier? I don't know much about the slab numbering. If there's a way to tell from the number that a book has been pressed, I'd definitely like to know so that I can avoid those issues. I checked through my books - I have one other issue with a 0006 number, and the CGC website says it was graded 7/25/2000, even though it's in a new-style holder. (So I guess it was re-holdered at some point?)

  20. Thanks! It's my first Spokane (but hopefully not my last).
  21. This thread's been quiet for a couple of days, so I figured I'd post this Harvey that I picked up a month or so ago:
  22. That's a beautiful Catman 1! It has an intriguing history, too. It was listed on WordWide's website last year, and then it showed up as sold for $7,300 around the same time it was listed in the ComicLink November auction, where it "sold" on 11/28/12 for around $4,100. The intriguing part is that while most books show up on the site for about six months after selling, all traces of this Catman #1 disappeared from the site after about a day or two. I guess it was very serendipitous that Ritter ended up with it back in his possession within months of it selling in the ComicLink auction.
  23. Wha??? Craig's gotta be at the top of everyone's list!! Overall, I prefer Graham I's "drippy" look for interior horror art to Craig's style, which was a little too Madison-Avenue-neat-and-tidy for me at times. Feldstein and Davis had some of the best horror covers. For sci-fi, I like Wood best out of the regular EC artists.
