  1. I recognize the guy on the bottom - former NYC mayor Ed Koch. I just didn't realize he was involved with comic books.
  2. Is there a good way to tell whether the oriental baddie pictured on a given axis cover is Hirohito or Tojo? I don't know how to tell them apart, and I'm not sure the CGC labels always get it right.
  3. Dear G. A. Tor Why don't I have any self control when bidding on comic books? Sincerely, Poor-house Bound
  4. Holy smokes is that Science 7 a nice book! I think my heart might have actually skipped a beat when I saw it.
  5. I think I've posted this before, but not in this thread. It's my only Fox book, although I'd love to pick up some early Foxes some day.
  6. I think this is my only GA/AA promotional comic book.
  7. Just when I had more or less gotten this revolting image out of my head from the last time it was posted! It's too horrible to exist - I think it should be burned.
  8. Richie Muchin - he has some nice stuff, but his asking prices look to be about 2X fair market value. Judging by his scans, I'd say his grades are generally about 1 grade high - e.g., if he says a book is a 9.0, it's probably an 8.5 by CGC standards. If you make him an offer, do it through his site, not E-Bay - maybe he'll be more apt to negotiate if he doesn't have to pay E-Bay fees.
  9. Did a boardie just buy the Strange Tales 29 on ComicConnect? I was the underbidder. (I refused to go any higher due to the lack of a back cover scan.)
  10. I strongly disagree - I'd wager that some of the best copies out there - of ANY book - have been cloistered away in private collections since before the CGC existed. Not all books change hands every 2 or 3 years. I've had most of the books in my collection for over 10 years, some for more like 30. Nothing that I bought before 2000 is slabbed.
  11. Gorgeous! I saw that on ComicConnect & thought about making an offer, but I haven't had good luck with acceptance of reasonable offers on that site, so I hesitated - and missed out!
  12. yes... One in the same (thumbs u Holy smokes! I wasn't even alive in the 60s. I may technically be middle-aged, but now I can feel young for a little while (at least until I look in the mirror).
  13. Cap 1. The tape on the Tec 27 would bug me Absolutely. The Tec 27 is really a 1.8 that got the 'magic tape bump'. otherwise, the ASM 1 is the best investment. I guess the magic tape bump will soon be history: http://www.cgccomics.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=3327&CGC-Modifies-Stance-on-Grading-Submissions-with-Tape What blows my mind is that it ever existed in the first place.
  14. I believe you that it exists, but the question is, if you hope to buy it, how do you establish a FMV unless it goes up for sale in a public auction? It's probably one of those things that's very rare but not necessarily that valuable because it's outside the scope of what most people are interested in collecting.
  15. Very true. I would sell my 89-year-old grandfather into slavery in order to score a comic book from my want list, and I'm one of the nicer guys in the hobby.
  16. I'd buy the Cap 1 because I still think there are more raw high grade Amazing Spider Man 1's out there than what the market will be able to absorb at current prices. I'd then try to trade the Cap 1 for a copy with White pages even if the grade were lower.
  17. The name Jon L. Blummer doesn't ring a bell - I don't think I've noticed his work before - but I'm already becoming a fan based on this cover.
  18. I'm not so sure about ranking Marvel #1 and All-American #16 that low. Are there any recent sales for Marvel #1 in CGC Universal low-grade? But as I mentioned in a prior post, compare the recent sales of Batman #1 (ranked #4) to All-American #16 (ranked #10). A CGC qualified, unrestored Batman #1 in 1.8 with OFF-WHITE PAGES sold for $10,050: http://www.comiclink.com/itemdetail.asp?back=%2Fitems%2Easp%3Fid%3D3852%26FROM%3D%26TO%3D&id=957645 A CGC universal, unrestored All-American #16 in 1.0 with BRITTLE PAGES sold for $11,250: http://www.comiclink.com/itemdetail.asp?back=%2Fitems%2Easp%3Fid%3D3868%26FROM%3D%26TO%3D&id=961785 Whoever paid $11,250 for that All-American #16 with brittle pages most likely overpaid, possibly just wanting a copy - any copy - and being willing to overpay in order to not have to look for another one. I doubt that book will ever fetch that much again, if it ever gets re-sold.
  19. I see that Overstreet lists the 4th book as All-American #16, but I think that book has faded in terms of collector interest. Do you agree, Gator? (I'd go with Batman 1, Captain America 1, and Marvel 1 as the next 3, in that order.)
  20. sounds about right for Metro/CC. sorry to hear about this. I've noticed a lot of raw books on CConnect that are obviously overgraded based on the scans and that have prices that would be sky high even if the stated grades were accurate. This story just reinforces what I was already starting to believe, i.e. that buying raw books through that site is asking to get hosed. (To be fair, though, I've had decent customer service when buying slabbed books from them.)
