Hey guys, I've had a slab for a few weeks (bought slabbed) whose certification number I just decided to punch into the CGC verification database for the heck of it and, lo and behold--it doesn't come up in the database! Holy Bat mess! It's not a particularly high value book--FMV is around $170ish--so fraud seems unlikely (I hope). I wanted to know if anyone had a similar experience. I wasn't sure if CGC could verify a slab for me that didn't show up on their online database, but I'll give them a call later on just to be sure. Any input is appreciated. Mucho gracias!

I can't explain why the book is, in my opinion, peaking so much earlier than SC22. If you look at the comparable facts between the two books, it doesn't make much sense that BB28 is now perceivably so much more valuable than SC22, aside from the likelihood that speculators are driving up BB28's value. Look at the facts. SC22 Census numbers (published Sept/Oct 1959): Near Mint 9.4 0 Near Mint - 9.2 1 Very Fine/Near Mint 9.0 3 Very Fine + 8.5 4 Very Fine 8.0 6 Very Fine - 7.5 7 Fine/Very Fine 7.0 16 Fine + 6.5 13 Fine 6.0 19 BB28 Census numbers (published Feb/Mar 1960) Near Mint 9.4 1 Near Mint - 9.2 1 Very Fine/Near Mint 9.0 7 Very Fine + 8.5 4 Very Fine 8.0 15 Very Fine - 7.5 12 Fine/Very Fine 7.0 17 Fine + 6.5 19 Fine 6.0 23 What's clear is that SC22 is harder to find in grades 6.0 and better than BB28, with SC22 having absolutely no copies better than 9.2 (a CLink 9.2 just sold for $66K). What isn't clear is whether JLA's first appearance is more popular and sought after than Green Lantern's. My belief is that JLA is not more popular than Green Lantern. IMO, BB28 is only more sought after now because of movie hype. Man of Steel, I believe, has only added fuel to that fire (I haven't seen it, but the movie reviews I've read have been tepid.) Many collectors/speculators think prices on BB28 will continue to go up. But when I look at the census numbers, the perceived popularity of JLA vis-a-vis Green Lantern, and the rapid increase in prices just over a one year period (a 6.0 has increased by over 80% in the last year according to GPA) what I'm seeing is, at best, the prices of this book plateauing, and, at worst, a bubble forming around BB28. When people say this book is undervalued, I just don't buy it. It was undervalued in 2010 or 2011. Maybe even in 2012. But not in 2013. If I owned a copy (I don't), I'd be selling it as I do not have much faith in its growth potential.

My point in referring to the SC22 sale four months before Green Lantern's theatrical release was that that price was buoyed by movie hype (apparently). Prices softened on SC22 only *after* the movie came out and blew big time. I see the same hype happening here but 4 years ahead of JLA's movie release instead of 4 months. Some desperately want to pick up a copy of BB28 before prices go even higher. But what makes anyone think prices will go higher? Again, it doesn't make sense that it should be worth more than a pre-movie hype SC22 when both are just as hard to find in grade (SC22 even moreso) and with GL being arguably just as, if not more, popular than JLA. IMO, What people need to ask about this book is whether they think it's worth more than SC22 at this point. To me, the answer is a resounding no. A good JLA movie is far, far, far from a given. By way of comparison, the TTA27 hype train seems to have screeched to a halt because I suspect people are asking themselves, Do I want to pay JIM83 prices for Antman?

I'd have to disagree with you there. Copies that appear overgraded will not fair as well as copies that present well. Regardless of whatever else is affecting a hammer price, this will always be the case. Especially with 5-figure books, where collectors are especially particular about what they're paying for. I think a lot of the lower sale numbers are due to sellers undervaluing the book with low BIN prices. You see that with two rather low Comiclink BIN prices and some low-ish eBay BIN prices. I just dont know where the hype train on this book is going. Is this book really undervalued at this point? I don't think it is any longer. In fact, I'll wager that it's ready for a plateau and a slow decline over the next couple of years. Maybe SC22 is a fair comparison, maybe not. But I think it's logical to compare because the two books came out relatively close in time (3 months apart) and have practically identical print runs (both 412 universal as of tonight). SC 22 CGC 5.0 (just for instance) topped out in Feb 2011, four months before Green Lantern's theatrical release, at around $3900 (pq was cream). No other sale since then has come close to that number. Most in fact go for around $2300-2500. BB28 CGC 5.0 just in May went for nearly $3000 (pq was CROW). I don't see how that number gets much higher. Is JLA much more popular than GL? I don't think so. Is BB28 harder to find in grade than SC22? No, in fact, it's harder to find 6.5s or better of SC22 than BB28. And as I said, the census numbers are identical. So how exactly does BB28 see more growth over the next 6 years than it's already seen? Unless there's a butt kicking movie come 2018 or whatever, I think folks paying more than $3k for a 5.0 are drinking a kool aid they won't like the taste of in a few years.

Prices on this book have gone out of control since fall 2012 when this thread began. I don't think it's coincidence.
