  1. Digital artists might do better selling limited hard copy production rights, but without violating any agreements in the production process of the actual book. Difficult to monetize as "original art". Hopefully, even this extreme limitation doesn't amount to a contract, copyright, or trademark violation on a technicality. David
  2. There is the possibility of future editions, so really you are just buying an early print, and an autograph. David
  3. The VS. might indicate is collecting/trading/role-playing card art from the VERSUS series, of which there are many permutations, and you can go crazy trying to find a published example if that's what this is. Because, cards. Lots of them! Best, David
  4. Feininger, but he also started as a cartoonist, not vice versa.
  5. Rube Goldberg, Coulton Waugh, Rich Buckler, and many others, I'm sure. Artists that have multiple careers are the norm rather than the exception, I'd guess, if only to survive and succeed. An interesting approach might be to examine whether any successful fine artists later became published mainstream sequential comic artists. David
  6. This is the way I feel, too. If sellers would simply be truthful, without deceit, I don't care if they make a quick buck if it is something they found that I want. David
  7. Very cool, I will never get to a major con, this is a real achievement! David
  8. Thanks, I hadn't noticed that. I'll take the over on that, but it still seems reasonable for such a cool cover. Lots of art out there! Good reminder about doing research, much appreciated. David
  9. This...from Vulture.com... It wasn’t the bold story that made “Master Race” so revolutionary — although the Holocaust was only ten years in the past and rarely spoken of. It was how Krigstein told the tale, using repeated panels, fractured images and expressionist anatomy to capture Reissman’s panic and dark deeds, and to break down time into fragmented, strobe-light-esque instants. Although today these devices are established comics vocabulary, they were utterly revolutionary in their time and inspired countless artists who came after to experiment with their own storytelling. Or as Spiegelman put it in the New Yorker, “Krigstein began to vibrate with the inner language of comics, to understand that its essence lay in the ‘breakdowns,’ the box-to-box exposition that breaks moments of time down into spatial units.” Krigstein never drew another story with the impact of this one, but he didn’t need to.
  10. If anyone can verify if this 11 X 17 card art piece was published, I would appreciate it. I did quite a bit of searching, and came up empty. But, I got it anyway just for the image. Signed John Lucas. Thanos vs. Champion Of The Universe. AND...I just got it in the mail (thanks, Donna!) and it does not disappoint. It has a heretofore undisclosed "MONSTERHANDSLUCAS@YAHOO.COM" inscription on the reverse, if that helps date this piece. Any help appreciated. AND further update I sent John Lucas a message with an inquiry about the piece. Great to see he is active in the marketplace, not easy for an artist. MONSTERHANDS is a character he created and is looking for an outlet, apparently. Seems like a good one! inscription on the reverse, if that helps date this piece. Any help appreciated. The light coloring around the force field is whiteout carefully airbrushed, or cleverly toothbrushed accents. Thanks for looking, comments welcome, David S. Albright
  11. BUMP for ending shortly and will sell (opening bid met). Currently at $200 for the book and art. Best, David S. Albright
  12. Thanks, Felix, for a great interview! I really appreciated the look into Todd Hignite's thoughts about original comic art trends. Best, David
  13. Your efforts are appreciated. I noticed the recent sale by that seller of a Peanuts art piece, wondering about that one.... David By bidding on items bidders understand and accept that: items are represented to the best of my ability, may be used or aged, and may contain unseen faults which are not listed and for which I do not take responsibility. I do not authenticate nor claim to be experts in the field of items listed; I use my best ability to determine the item and characteristics of the items attributes and functions. Please contact us prior to bidding to clarify any questions or concerns. If the item is not determine with any authentication it means it is sold as is,in the manner or attributed to, the artist.
  14. That would bother me if I discovered it was unpublished, since there is a premium attached to published art vs. inventory or commission art. Eventually, this distinction will hopefully resonate with the auction houses. Best, David
  15. LINK TO HA THING COVER ART WILSON SINNOTT If I had the money, this cover would be a great addition to my collection. Watching! Not my consignment, I haven't consigned to this auction. My interest is because I have some interior pages from this book. Best, David S. Albright

  18. If making any copy of art you own is against the law, how is it interpreted when you make a digital copy (i.e., CAF) for personal use? Is the distinction made between digital and hard copy? Is the legal line crossed when someone SELLS a copy (versus personal use)? What about dealer catalogs showing copies? Can they legally charge for the catalog? So many questions. I have made reference copies of original comic art, and other art, digital and hard, for personal use, but I would not sell them and hard copies are marked as reference copies NFS. This seems reasonable to me.
  19. I'm curious if there is currently an authenticator for original comic art who will attest to any restoration, added later elements, etc of a piece that he/she examines in hand . David
  20. In a well-developed area of collector interest, I think you are right. But, we are in a fringe area or newly-developing area such as original comic art, where hidden and suspicious adulteration is known to have occurred without disclosure. And there are no ground rules. Whether this market matures to the point that disclosure about after-publication tweaking is common or necessary remains to be seen, but we are not there yet, sadly. Without common collector agreement to preserve works as they age, the danger becomes that they end up in the dust bin of history. I bought from an artist who put Scotch tape on some stats and blurbs on a cover right before he sold it to me, and I considered it a helpful gesture on his part, at the time. Today, I might recoil a bit, and politely suggest that I would take care of it. Who knows what the future brings? I support preservation with disclosure. David
