There are lots of reasons to be wary of auction statistics, as you say. At this value, I think there is a chance the buyer just changed their mind. Possibly when they got the piece in hand. In my college years, my art professor suggested that if you tested and made slight alterations to known formulas, the new result became your own. This may have been flawed advice, but I note that it did encourage productivity without the haunting spectre of being cast as a copyist. Sadly, he was completely, and flawlessly, copied in a senior year project gallery show, which caused quite a stir.

I once bought a lot (30-40 pieces?) of the Berdanier "How It Began" daily panels, and the owner provided multiple titles and syndicate strips he fabricated to account for ones that may have fallen off. Worked for him, and works for me and if I detect or restore later such activity on anything, I disclose it when it changes hands. Best, David S. Albright

It is an auction that ends in a day or so, and has the opening bid of $300, so it will sell. SOLD $300. My seller name on ebay is bakeralbright, and you can just click on the link to get to the auction. Sometimes, these pictures on this site are better than ebay's, so click on these and magnify to get a good idea of the piece. I created the title, and it is just lightly attached to the board. OK! So, I picked up a couple of the comic books just for fun to compare the book art to the Lichtenstein art. Comic art credit to Mike Sekowsky on the "Kiss With Cloud" and Jack Abel on "Torpedo Los". Alternatively, the comics.org database now credits the Kiss With Cloud art to Bernard Sachs.

I'm working on some stuff that came from the attic (I was actually looking for something else, my MSH #13, still looking) and I found this Mr. Anthony's Love Clinic #1. Quite nice condition! The point is that the artist has worked a lifetime, and should be credited with that experience when considering the "how long" question. It's a bit of an affront to the artist to suggest a work in question could be reduced to an hourly calculation, since the questioner likely couldn't do it ever, even if they tried. So, when the client is told the actual #, it can have a real multiplier effect, like, "Wow, you can do something in just a few hours that I will never be able to do." And then you can move on to the next topic, since the hourly calculation is exposed as a bit of a fraudulent approach to valuation in art. David

My wife gets this question frequently. How long did it take you to paint that? She does realistic still life oil painting. Her answer is usually tempered by a reflection on how long she has worked to get this good, but ultimately buyers really want to know, actually how long? She now acknowledges her workplace schedules to collectors as best she can just to satisfy their curiosity. It is a place where a conversation can then continue, since everyone uses their time in a personal way. David

There is a local (10 miles) auction house near me, and I can drive to the preview, and view lots in person. Then, I can sit at home at my computer and bid without wasting my day sitting in a warehouse watching lots I have no interest in. It's a beautiful thing, modern technology! I drive over and pick up winnings on Monday, pay with a check. Not much original comic art, however. I will be curious if Taurus comes out with another comic art auction or if it was a one-off. Agree, there have been questions from book collectors/investors/speculators with concern about reliability of the original comic art market, and whether they should take the plunge. Without clarity for the potential new collectors, it may remain a narrow field of collecting interest. Maybe the architect of this site could pin a "definitions" memo? David

I agree that within the lexicon of original comic art collectors, describing color guides as original art is confusing, and potentially deceptive. However, there are doubtless some tremendous color guides extant of historic pages which should be of considerable collector interest. David
