  1. Who becomes the Hobgoblin in Amazing Spider-Man #289. We're such a pedantic hobby...
  2. I seem to recall that Iron Fist 15 (Byrne X-Men) was worth more than Iron Fist 14 (1st Sabretooth).
  3. Antique market find, with apologies for cross-posting in modern:
  4. A few more illustrations for those who are curious:
  5. I've been poking around for some time to try to find out more about this, but it seems to be just another Whitman mystery. The Buck Rogers book also appears in a scarcer Whitman version (picture below). This seems to be harder to find than the Marvel edition, and Overstreet values it about 10% higher. Both editions were published in 1979, when Marvel and Western/Whitman seem to have had a deal to package treasury editions with both Whitman and Marvel labels. This was done primarily on movie adaptations (including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and multiple Star Wars editions), although it also occurred with some random issues of Marvel Treasury Edition. Marvel also tried this approach with other publishers, including Charlton reprint publisher Modern Comics (with a Battlestar Galactic treasury) and Parkes Run (for The Empire Strikes Back and GI Joe). Whitman also used the same approach with DC Comics, publishing Whitman editions of the Famous First Edition Superman #1 treasury, and the Muhammad Ali vs. Superman Treasury. All were published between 1978 and 1982, as far as I can tell.
  6. Looks like someone's trying out for the "Least Helpful Board Post Ever" Award this year...
  7. I have, but I'm trying to avoid explicitly violating ebay's rules about arranging off-site contact. He mentioned that he knew I was on the boards, and what my name was, so I'm hoping to hear from him here.
  8. This thread needs a bump, so here are today's new arrivals!
  9. This is a quick request for help contact another boardie. Nostalgia_Sal is his ebay handle, and he does visit the boards, but I don't know his name here. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance!
  10. Don’t worry, it will be OK... Robin has a can of repellent.
  11. What an amazing wealth of information... thanks for posting! And my mind boggles at the notion of a Thundarr the Barbarian comic. That series was always one of my favourites. interesting that of everything listed, I think only it and Astral Frontier were never published.
  12. I think you're right, but "some magical entity" was spelled R-E-T-C-O-N.
  13. This always bothered me as a kid... a lightning strike shatters a collection of random chemicals and covers Barry Allen in the residue, giving him super powers... And then a little later, another random lightning strike shatters another collection of other random chemicals and covers Wally West in another residue - giving him exactly the same powers. It's almost as weak as getting hit by a radioactive truck and gaining super radar sight.
  14. I bought it new(ish), about 2 or 3 months after it came out. The LCS had thrown it in the 25 cent bin... This was back in the day when we thought all manufacturing errors were worthless. I was totally into the X-Men at the time, and thought it was kind of cool.
  15. I'm not sure where this one belongs, but it seemed that those who follow this thread might be able to help me. I have a copy of Green Lantern 46 (2nd print) that is a direct edition, with a UPC sticker over the UPC box. Are these common?
  16. This copy of Uncanny X-Men #149 has the cover on backwards and inside out:
  17. I don’t know if that slip in spelling was intentional or not, but this is the best new phrase i’ve heard in years. Hope you don’t mind if I steal it! The holy of all Hollies...
  18. I grabbed one today... It has the usual challenges in the conversion of the larger European format to an American-sized comic, but is reasonably attractive. It has a fun poster spread in the middle. And I also learned French reading Asterix, as well as Lt. Blueberry. @MisterX you're right - it's a partial reprint of Asterix the Gaul.
  19. This book was produced in 1992 as a promotional book. I don't think it was a giveaway, but came with three-ring punched paper for school binders. The book was developed to promote literacy, and was funded by the Government of Canada's Ministry of Multiculturalism and Citizenship. It seems to have been produced in partnership with Zellers, which was a nationwide chain of department stores that ceased operations in 2013. They were a lower mid-range retailer, roughly equivalent to KMart in their market positioning, and I suspect the paper products this was sold with were a "house brand" product. The Zellers connection is evidenced by the inside front cover content. This is relatively common in Canada, and is typically found in dollar boxes... I stumble across it quite often. Having said that, there is a French-language version of this book that I have never seen in person, and which seems to be much scarcer (pictured). Let me know if you have any more specific questions. I can't guarantee I'll know the answer, but I'll do my best!
  20. I have tons of the obscure stuff, and am also in Canada... send me a list if you’re ever looking to fill in the blanks.
  21. I'm not even entirely convinced we can say this, with complete certainty about what it means... Whitman Publishing was also a company incorporated in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada that published comics in some kind of relationship with Western for many years. Subsidiary? Licensee? Producer of knock-offs? Acquisition of the brand as Western went into decline? Who knows. Their books included French-language translations of U.S. comics (like "Au Dela du Reel") in the 1960s, unusual Disney and other digest comics in the 1970s, and - just possibly - many of the scarce 8-12 pre-pack books and scarcer DC Whitman variants in the early 1980s. I'm not arguing that this is definitely the case - though others do - just that our understanding of the publishing history of this company in this period is pretty sketchy. As always, if you have evidence of your statements, I'm all ears - I'm ready to be convinced. You say that all Whitmans are reprints? Great... show us your evidence. You say that all Fat diamonds were distributed by Whitman, and no one else? Great, show us your evidence. I, for one, am really interested in solving this riddle.
  22. Either that, or it's like every other legacy character. What you have is the first appearance of the old Mississippi flag. What's hot now is the first appearance of the new Mississippi flag. Plus the first cover of the new flag, the first cameo of the new flag, and the first preview of the new flag... and maybe the first time Peach Momoko draws the new flag.
