I plan on it when the stimulus check hits the account. There's a shop literally a 10 minute walk from me. I'm planning on a mylar purchase to upgrade my storage and going to see how much of my Captain America run I can complete as well. Maybe some Funkos or other figures. I'm in a decent spot financially, thankfully, and if I can take the bulk of an unexpected check and spend it locally and with a business that's gonna need some sales, I'll do it.

I never see myself wearing a mask outdoors as that's not the world I want to live in however if someone made a Captain America themed mask I might consider it

Nah, not just the wealthy. Crisis for some = buying opportunity for others. Timing is key though, no pun intended

Have a Cigar! Golden Age only....!
David-Lance Roten replied to Shield's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Collecting for fun and nostalgia. An early collecting memory of mine is seeing a copy of this comic bagged and hanging by tack on a wall back in 1978. My copy, soon on the way to me, is just a bit better condition wise -
86 - 91-ish. We've never had an abundance of comic shops proper in my area (Charleston/Berkeley/Dorchester counties S.C.). The best times for me as a reader/collector were 77-84. We had several Book Exchanges in the area. 3 of which had comic specific areas, one in Summerville had a whole back room devoted to comics. By the mid 90's Barnes and Noble, in Galactus fashion, began murdering, er, buying out our Book Bag stores and others. 90's teens/young adults needed to be able to sit in the middle of an aisle reading instead of buying while drinking a latte', B&N provided that service. Book Bag was our local in-state stores that sold only new books/mags/comics. That trickle down effect eventually hit the remaining Book Exchanges and poofed them. Online availability of course plays a role also, then and now. Selection / convenience.

Do collectors often reset or start over?
David-Lance Roten replied to ignimbrite's topic in Comics General
I rebooted 3 times between 2008-late 2012 alone . Fairly static since Dec 2012. Comic wise I've stayed on the Captain America & Tarzan path. Gonna start adding some Atlas/Marvel Westerns, some Luke Cage, Dr. Strange and Iron Man shortly, hopefully. Gotta look out right now for employees and family so a lot of window shopping but brighter days ahead. -
What else do you collect??
David-Lance Roten replied to PopKulture's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Little of this and that. Character glasses. Rasslin' mags. Rasslin' figs. Couple of lamps here/there. Cards / comics are main focus. -
When did Bags and Boards start
David-Lance Roten replied to dzbad's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Back issues, since 1977 at least. Bags anyway. For new comics I can recall one shop I frequented began using bags and boards on weekly pulls in 1983 right around the time DC debuted Vigilante. -
Please support your local comic stores!
David-Lance Roten replied to Dale Roberts's topic in Comics General
Soundwave Comics, Movies, Music - Summerville S.C. Will remain open unless of mandatory quarantine. I support that approach 100%. Captains Comics - Charleston S.C. ahhh just checked, Captains is closed. -
So... how exactly does Magneto fly?
David-Lance Roten replied to slym2none's topic in Comics General
Something to do with the magnetics of the North and South Poles and his ability to manipulate that. It was explained to me once, can't remember it all. Terrible answer I know -
This is used to be my happy place....
David-Lance Roten replied to Jordysnordy's topic in Comics General
Here in S.C. not much happening yet. Varies from parent to parent. Well, my Mom's 87. I've got 2 sisters 68 & 66, a bro 65 2 bro in laws 68 & 70. I'm the baby at 50. . My mom lived through WW2 and having family in it and dying. My own fathers death was difficult at the time for all of us(1986). My Mom's tough stubborn and about the last person I'd attempt to enforce a stay at home order. Short of armed guard, good luck. Would never work, won't even try. Her philosophy is shes been through tons, whatever this virus is better bring everything it's got in her case. Because she is going to live her life with zero fear. -

David-Lance Roten replied to Jordysnordy's topic in Comics General
Easier said than done but limit your media check ins. Be it twitter, facebook, tv, whatever it may be. In my case what i'm doing with the time I normally devoted to those I'm now using to spend w/ my 87 yr old Mom. A little TCM watching, a little ID Channel watching etc. Whatever it may be that you like to do, and will ease the mind. And yeah I saw some snark comments above. This is one of the best boards I visit. Please limit the snark if we can, this is new ground for everybody. -

Thoughts on Stocks and Coronavirus and Comics
David-Lance Roten replied to sfcityduck's topic in Comics General
Bizarre times. Just turned 50 myself. Current events seem to me to contain various levels of: Legit concern panic fear cowardice -
I only collect singles, primarily Hall of Famers. Nothing too shiny and new though I have a LeBron rookie and a couple Yadier Molina rookies slumming in a display around here. Similarities galore w/ comic collecting. You've got your drek, you've got your speculation potentials and you've got your popular "always in demand regardless" product. I'm a collector only these days w/ both cards and comics. My rules and outlook won't be the same as many folk. I'm interested in nostalgia and memories, not $$$
