Haha. Yeah. I didn't think about that when I wrote the response. Waiting 6 years or more is not really a "flip".

I have only bought a few pieces with the intention of selling them down the road. Just as Gene stated they were pieces I liked, not loved, and with that in mind I figured a little extra cash from selling them would go towards something I loved. On two of them I ended up breaking even and the other two I ended up nicely ahead. While the effort to get the pieces was nothing difficult. the effort to get them off my hands and into a profitable status was really not worth it in my opinion. Prices are going up more and more all the time so unless one has been doing this for awhile or can somehow land that Coollines Artwork whale that seems to be out there with their high prices they charge I don't think it's really worth it. In fact just with my taste change in the last year, I have found that I have ended up just breaking even overall since I am selling off pieces that I thought I "loved" at the time. Much happier now with my more focused pursuit and my wallet has gotten a nice break as well. I'm sure collector's who have been doing this since before 2010 can make out nicely if they decide to part with their pieces, but anything from here on out is a big gamble.

I agree. Felix has always been approachable in the hobby and is really easy to work with on purchases. Plus the podcasts are always fun to listen to since it gives me a different incite into this hobby of ours. Keep them up Felix. Also, good job Scott. I could have listened to even more about your career and deciding factors in your purchases at the time.

I agree that setting a low reserve is not a bad rule of thumb. Essentially, setting a reserve at all is up to the person who's piece it is but I find that too many reserves, just not at this auction on Pedigree, are just set way out of expectation. That's why I think if a person is in no hurry to sell the piece then they should just consign it or put it on CAF with the $ and see if anyone eventually bites. Putting it in an auction just smacks of speculation in that while the reserve should be the floor of what you are willing to take on the art, it's now becoming the ceiling and it just seems to chase a lot of collectors away. I love this way of thinking anyway. The art you own has a perceived value to you and unless someone comes to you with that price you won't move on it, but the thing is, if you really don't want the art anymore and would rather have the money, you are holding yourself hostage of getting any money. Until you have that money in hand, what you have is really your perception of it's value. While that value can be seen in what the auctions recently sold or trade deals you are privy to, but if you paid too much for it and want to see that money come back to you then you may be waiting for a long while for that to happen if the FMV isn't even close.

I'll keep saying this until I'm probably dead, but I do not understand the point of putting a reserve on auction items. Just consign it if you won't let it go below a certain minimum. I know we don't want to lose money in an auction so hence the reserve, but if the needle isn't moving beyond your bottom floor price then that should be a sign that either the right person isn't looking right now for the piece or you have to face facts that you probably overpaid for the item and you will have to take your lumps. If I see a reserve on an item even if it's one I really like, I'm just walking away from now on. The reserve prices in this Pedigree auction are over what the FMV will bear on some of these pieces. I can barely find a piece in this auction that actually doesn't have a reserve. What's the point then? This just puts me off the site even more so than I already was.

I saw that exact thing happen on a piece I was interested in. No reserve was showing on it and as soon as someone bid it went to "reserve not met". Not at all a great way to start off your site for bidding in my opinion.

I'm with you. I don't know Doug, but if one got himself into a mess where he was actively taking money from people and not fulfilling his duty to them, then sure people are going to have reservations. I know it's easy to judge when one is outside the situation, but I believe people don't get barred if something questionable wasn't going on. I for one appreciate the information that was brought forth in this post and will decide if I want to participate based on the discussions that I see on this very forum. It also doesn't do one favors to join a forum and then immediately blast it for where people like to share information. That does not make me want to join in the auction even more.

Now I'm really not bidding....jeeez.

I have medium bidding control. Ebay and Clink are easy to just put the one amount in and move on. HA is where I can get into danger. I've been known to hit that bid button a few times after I should have stopped.

Thanks for bringing this up. There was one item I was interested in, but I think I'll pass. I had no idea that it was all under control of one guy.

Great stuff here Felix and Gene. It's good to hear it from a money perspective since as the numbers keep growing on these pieces so does ones hope that it will at least maintain it's value. I also agree with Gene to a degree that there will at some point be a drop as our generation moves on but I believe the the cream of the crop items will hold their value. I don't see a Dark Knight page plummeting even after we are gone since this is one of those books of importance for a lot of reasons. That's a whole nother discussion, but I do think there is even more to this discussion when you and Gene meet again later. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the heads up. I saw a piece in their gallery for a very good price and it seemed too good to be true. I had a feeling just for that price alone this would not be a good deal to make, especially when someone comes right out the gate with an account and everything is for sale.

I'd say that's definitely an A to me. Got a great shot of Jessie and Tuilp and the torturous unbelievable scumbag of Jody giving poor Jessie the info on the fate of his friend. Man I hated Jody and TC so much in that comic. So well written.

Great page! The editorial notes are great to see.

While I agree that an artist doesn't have to sell his art if he doesn't want to, but why put it at such a price that's difficult to justify in it's purchase? If you don't want to part with it then don't, but putting it out at such a high price that a lot of fans can't justify spending on it just comes across wrong in my opinion. And opinions are like a-holes and I got plenty of them.

I was looking forward to purchasing a page from this run, but those prices really put me off. While I think his and Snyder's run have been great, I don't think it was that great for what he's asking. Glad I wasn't the only one thinking it. Apparently though people are buying. Been seeing tweets about people grabbing pages so I guess there is the answer for some of us and his prices.

In case anyone here was not aware, Greg Capullo just listed some of his Batman work for sale on his website - Link here - http://capulloart.net/?v=7516fd43adaa While he's got some nice pages on there, they won't come cheap. Wait till you see what some of the panel pages are going for.

Thanks Felix. You are right. Only certain artists or characters seem to warrant that increase in price, but Dillon on Preacher is one I never would have guessed either. I wonder if we will start seeing prices climb for pages from YTLM and Fables and such. Those hold a special place with some of my fellow friends have no superheroes attached to them.

So thanks to all of you bums (I mean fellow friends and collectors really I do ) I had to go out and get myself a Preacher page. Not sure it's an A page, but it works for me.
