Show us your Modern Newsies!

Spawn fans love the cover for #70 too. I've seen fan postings where Capullo has stated it's one of his faves. So that may have contributed some. -
Showing off your comics to non comicbook people?

There's kind of a saying along those lines (paraphrasing)... Look at all that clutter. The clutter used to be money, and that money used to be time. -
Showing off your comics to non comicbook people?
oldmilwaukee6er replied to XxSpideyxX's topic in Comics General
Talking about comics to people who 'get it' is a big reason why I started coming to the forums in the first place! Nobody, not even my stoner disc golf buddies, appreciates my independent / underground comix collection enough to sit through more than half a box. Nobody but me cares about the oddball Milwaukee counterculture items, the alternative newspapers. Every 5 years or so the local alternative paper or buzzsite does a 'Milwaukee's rich underground history' clickbait and a friend will say "do you have any of those?" And I'll be all "yeah, I do" and I'll invite them over and nothing ever happens. Or you show them a nice book in a slab and they don't get it. They only understand the money side, which I am reticent to discuss. And I do try and connect with them. I'll listen to their hobby stories like crazy. I enjoy viewing a good collection, any collection that has nice attention to detail. And I'd love for even one of the nieces / nephews to show any interest in comic books. -
The Doctor Aphra Appreciation Thread

Agreed. Or this article that, after the title, repeatedly refers to Aphra as "he" https://asapland.com/dr-aphra-could-make-her-debut-in-a-disney-series/9795/ -

So bad they're good Facebook comic book groups
oldmilwaukee6er replied to NoMan's topic in Comics General
I tried two Spawn groups. One I left because it was buy / sell and the mod was heavy handed. The other one has been good, more fanboy related content. It gives me good information on variants and an appreciation for the comic's fans in Central & S. America. I have to be careful because it can really stir up FOMO with expensive variants. My other 3 are mostly underground comix related and they've been meh. All of these Fb groups serve to fill my newsfeed with better content than old acquaintances, co-workers and relatives. It's kinda like - a bad day on the golf course... -
Should I invest in limited edition newbies
oldmilwaukee6er replied to Colin Nash's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
Some collectors view store exclusives or retailer exclusives as manufactured collectibles (akin to a Bradford Exchange). You may also be referring to incentive variants where a retailer must buy X of something in order to get Y. There are whole atypical speculator markets built up around these books and the price of noob admission is high. I'm a collector. If I wasn't collecting comics I would be collecting something else (I do in fact). But I also like when my items appreciate in worth. Set collecting goals. My advice would be to start slow. Something that is fun for you personally, that you attach meaning. And educate yourself on the spec side of the hobby- information advantage, timing markets, access points, etc. What are your favorite characters? I have noticed that the trend is to release signature artist variant covers with limited issue to say 600 or 1000 worldwide In some ways these type of exclusives are set up to funnel some of the speculator run-up directly to the artist by eliminating middlemen. These markets are still inefficient however (and profit can be made). -

First original Star Wars character not from the films to lead a Marvel comic series… Can I get a for the bad Doctor? Who's still on the series? Anyone picking up the 6-inch figures? Who wants to see BT1 and 000 on the big screen tearing it up in SW's first R-rated movie? -
This Week in your Collection - Moderns ONLY
oldmilwaukee6er replied to showcase4's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
My moderns are pretty much down to Spawn, Usagi Yojimbo & Dr. Aphra... The last 6 weeks have been maddening for Spawn I started ordering with Things From Another World, joined a Facebook group, and still miss so much of what's released. Ross B&W exclusive. Also have the Crain virgin exclusive coming in ~2 weeks. The 302 d & e covers were solicited late & not avail for preorder on TFAW. Had to buy these off the Fb group. Seems like about half of collectors missed these. Bought a nice lot of 40 NM Marvel Angela books off FeeBay (85c shipped each). Digital downloads unpopped. Also included Original Sin 5.1-5.5, Asguardians ot Galaxy 1-10, Asgard's Assassin 1-6 -
This book looks to be a printer error or proof or one off? The tradedress is right for 285. 285 had the half sketch covers R and L and the presales jumped due the sheer number of covers. IF it is a one off cover variant it's probably $500-1k to right buyer. It's also possible it's a foreign version that I am unfamiliar with. I belong to a Spawn Facebook group that includes collectors that chase this sort of thing. Nice books 👍

East Village Other Marvel Articles
oldmilwaukee6er replied to TellshiarMarvelmaniaCollector's topic in Comic Magazines
Definitely seen EVOs before. They published lots of comic material including many core underground comic artists, incl Crumb, Shelton, Spain, Trina and more. Larry Hama even worked there for a spell. They are important to underground comix and countercultural collectors, particularly the Gothic Blimp Works #1-8 (all comic supplement; though hard to store flat unfolded), and the Crumb covers fetch the most (sometimes a few hundred dollars).- 3 replies

This book captures so much of comic history... The comics code, the loss associated, subversion of the code, comics for adults (comics as art), an alternative distribution system for comics... Frankly, I would not want to read a history of comics that glosses over the importance of underground comix!

This thread is why it's usually better to say something like "the best I could offer is $X"... But I find myself saying it sometimes. Usually it's something that is already in my price range, I'm gonna buy it at whatever price they say and I'm just looking for a nibble. When I set up at a large flea market with my brother I often get the pros and early birds asking after stuff that isn't priced yet or I'm not fully knowledgeable... Pro: What's your best price? Me: What's your offer (me wanting the pro to state price first)? Pro: I can't buy it and sell it Me: Aha, but that's precisely what you do.

Is she still THE BEST selling comic writer that NOBODY (in the hobby) knows about?

my "Paper Girls #1" came today.....
oldmilwaukee6er replied to showcase4's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
Series is over after #30, right? When I get a chance I'll post all the small freebies that I got from the newspaper guild.
