Newbie question about verification
oldmilwaukee6er replied to Biggest's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Cool book! You can tell based on the dates that McFarlane signed first it's lucky he signed low. For the big 2020 signing event he just did, I saw a lot of blank books come out with massive signatures right in the middle of the blank. -
With underground comix, one of my collecting focii, the labels evolve and change over time as new information is uncovered by CGC or added by collector request. Old label books have few to no notes on them. Take a look at a few examples of your book on feeBay current / sold auctions... If there is something you want on the label, request it and see (they likely won't honor it but they might).

An "oldie" comic collecting question.
oldmilwaukee6er replied to Skylath's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
@Skylath I got fed up trying to buy Spawns locally about a year ago. I buy my Spawn comics online from Things from Another World. I order the covers as they become available in Previews and they hold my books and ship them about once per month. I also joined a Facebook group to try and follow news on some of the rarer Con / Store exclusive books. -

Comics with other comics featured on the cover

👍 Currently a copy out there for $20. Much better than MCS prices
-
At least 26k copies sold originally. The prices on MCS surprised me and I'd think there are copies out there to find at a better price.

The different comic book ages and what they brought.
oldmilwaukee6er replied to kav's topic in Comics General
Absolutely we can trace u-comix origins to EC fandom/fanzines and the impact of the CCA (e.g. like on Crumb, as below). If only we could have convinced Wertham those early pre-code books were for adults... -

While I like this book as a symbol of the Bronze Age, I must take issue with the notion that drugs kicked off the Bronze Age or that somehow comics are now focused on social issues beginning here. No. The groundwork for both of these begin prior to the Bronze Age. Underground artists pushed the CCA boundaries for over 4+ years prior to GLGA76 and established comic books as a viable medium for telling stories to adults, including a way to distribute them directly to the new readership. -

No, undergrounds would have been c. 1966/65 to 1973 at earliest (SCOTUS ruling on obscenity, newspaper shortage) and most would say 1977 (alternatives take over with Cerebus). So def Silver and Bronze -
Who here tried to collect runs of titles? (Completists)
oldmilwaukee6er replied to nepatkm's topic in Comics General
It doesn't end! I don't want it to for my runs. I took a year of watching feeBs and picking locally before I finished my Spawn 1-304+ run I like having a want list for these runs. I like that it's a journey more than a destination with these titles. I run collect: Spawn, emphasis on condition Usagi Yojimbo, all appearances (less emphasis on condition) Zap Comix Freak Brothers Doctor Aphra Most anything Jim Mahfood -

Underground comix. Self publishing, subverting the CCA, Avant garde art movement, comics for adults. Basis of direct market, comics shops. -
1st CGC submission value?
oldmilwaukee6er replied to rrobe99999's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
I submit in person at shows and the CGC rep usually recommends maximizing the value in the tier (for just the reasons Avi stated above) -
Nope. Not that I am aware.
-
Well, I have collected long enough to see Spawn #1 debated as key ... which I also submit renders the term moo. Also stare at this. It doesn't help.
