most big books are out of price range for a lot of folks and having a framed original cover is not a bad option these days. Any piece of an action 1 is desirable. I'm sure a slabbed staple off an action 1 will come to market some day.CC sold a FC only Bat 1 CGC for $3k+ this month.Yup, I was watching that one, it went for $3,106. I also watched an All American #16 front cover only with a big chunk missing go for $2,766.
Per link below, 3/5 of the front cover of Action #1 went for $6,800 in 2009.

Any theories on why someone would be willing to spend hundreds and thousands of dollars even on literally mere pieces of covers? Regardless of the rarity of the actual comic they came from I'm having a hard time seeing it.

Hmm .... slabbed staple?

As long as I can remember, it has been THE book for me.
I mean just saying it out loud "Batman Number One" is amazing. I mean it is BATMAN and it is the #1 issue of his own title. Not to mention it has the first appearance of the most important, and recognizable villain of all time (The Joker) and the most important female villain of all time (Catwoman).
I know that Action 1 and Tec 27 are bigger books, but say those titles to a layman and you'll get little, or no, reaction. Say Batman number one to them and they get impressed.
I'm not sure if Batman 1 is the reason I love yellow covers with red logos, or my love of yellow covers with red logos makes it even more special to me. But either way I love that combo.
If I only had one book in my collection it would be Batman #1.
Yup, Bat1 has a lot going for it. Thats why I voted it book of the year in the other thread.
I'd like to add a Tec 27 back to my collection to complement the Bat 1. But the chances of reacquiring one of those anytime soon is pretty slim
That's great stuff Bill.
I share your enthusiasm. Batman is my favorite superhero but the Joker is my favorite overall character. To have his first appearance (first two really) take place in Batman's landmark first issue is something really special. With all of the additional highlights: 1st app. of Catwoman, 3rd app. of Robin, classic cover, classic back cover, last Pre-Robin Tec story, reprinted origin from Tec #33, etc. -- there's just so much to love about this book.

Rick I would have thought #35 was the easiest to track down? I have seen endless copies in the last 10 years in comparison to #33.
and the hardest one to locate the last couple of years, doesnt it seem to be #27 or #29?

as they say in Star Wars "there is another…"
Absolutely gorgeous. Has it had restoration?
-J.
looks too nice right? I really don't think so.
In that case you got yourself a 9.0ish, blue Tec 35 ...
GULP ...
-
You'd be surprised. I bet there are dozens of boardies that own a bat 1 (or more than one)
With blue 3.0ish copies currently sniffing 50K a pop. I would not hesitate to call it offending to own MORE than one copy of Bat1. This book is not for hoarding.
Comic Connect auctioned off a 3.0 last night with off white/white pages for $35,500 but cover was grainy/stains.
35K ...
Linky ?

I sometimes think if Kane drew the 33 as a night cover loaded with a full moon and rolling fog (like the 29 and 31), it would be in ranks with the 29/31Time to bump this thread with my new Tec 33Just love this cover, congrats Bill that is a keeper!
....Or if one of the dudes in the car was holding a syringe to the other's neck.
I personally dig all four of the "classic cover" pre Robin Tecs (29, 31, 33, 35). None of them come cheap, but I gave the 33 the nod for the first told 1930's Bats' "origin" story inside.
-J.
I seem to recall there was a book pre #29 ... that also had a kind a classic cover ? was it # 25 or # 26 or something? I dont recall the specific digit.

So jealous of all of you. Id give anything to join this club...
Yup - pretty exclusive club imho. Almost too exclusve to be a GA-thread. Perhaps just a PM-string among the chosen few ...

In some countries it is illegal for cats to pee on comics
it should be illegal everuwhere

I don't think the price tag on Action 1 has moved. (I'm a little worried it's going to start to stagnate in those mid grades now that it is already out of reach for 99.9% of collectors in that half million dollar range for a nice copy. I wouldn't even be surprised if prices came down a little in certain grades over time)
To me, the question is, with Action 1s being unaffordable to almost everyone, how much higher does that drag prices on AC 7/10/13.
Or you can turn it upside down: when they drag a copy of action 1 out of a friggin wall, virtually torn in half and looking like it survived the apocalypse, and it still sells for a gazillion $$$$. - then I wonder if that book (A1) can go any higher at all? Why? cause nobody can afford it anymore ... at least not among the people who like funny books.
-
well if you,ve got nill to say, dont bump the thread ...
I just thought of something to type:
with the action 13 sale (34K) where does that PUT the ACTION 1 price tag

In relation to price paid (fmv), what will generically get you the most 'bang for your buck' in GA:
(i) Ext plod
(ii) mod. plod
(iii) slight plod
(iv) blue ?

certainly eye appeal is pretty good for the grade
here's your birthday favorite book Bill
. I swapped my Cap 1 for a Bat 1 two summers ago, but not because the upside was tremendously favoring the Bat 1. I don't think you will be very far off with either book. They have, for the most part, been close in value with more Bat 1s than Cap 1s in total existence. The marvel movies has helped bring Cap more exposure so the gap has closed. Both great books though.
first Joker should always keep Bat 1 slightly ahead of Cap 1, but the margin has tightened.
it is very close right nowCap #1 will pass Bat 1 in the next 5 yearsIf you should go for a Big book now would it be Cap1 or Bat1? which has most longterm upside as you see it?
I don't remember seeing your copy Ben, time to post it again
Hey, that one looks like an easy 3.5 all day long to me.
Harshly graded indeed ...
are there interior "issues" hammering it into 2.0 ?
-
Bat 1 or Cap 1
Just get both of them. Problem solved.
"Get'em both" = get a grip
the dough, - I only have so much mullah ...

would have been great if Kane placed the Joker on the cover, but at least the joker splash page on the interior is fantastic.Bat 1 or Cap 1Just get both of them. Problem solved.
I think Batman 1 will always be worth more than Cap 1.
Batman will always be more popular and as has been said numerous times 1st Joker means a lot (as does Catwoman).
I love the iconic Bat 1 cover but imagine if Joker was on the cover somewhere.
The "first" "really" Joker cover would be Bat 11, - correct?
There is one before (Bat7 ?) but the Joker motive is not "cherry".
With the cover driven cgc-,market this book is one to have ...

why did you swap it? was it your heart or your wallet which drove ya?

probably vg/fn or better range. Maybe even 7.0 range (depends on the piece a d how big the year seals etc)The comic link Cap1 cgc 8.5 slight P.
Any guesstimate as to (i) pre-restoe grade as well as (ii) approx. amount of dough (ballpark) needed to win it ?
seems like an intersting copy of this book ...
30-40k
how large a procentage of 8.5 blue label pricing would that be ... 20%
Just cant see a dude sinking 40K hard earned cash into a lowly PLOD book.
It is considered inferior right?
And there is no way of knowing have large a chunk was ricepapered / filled in ...
what would 40K get ya in blue label cap1?

Yeah, and may a rumour surface one day about that mythic truckload of longboxes stuffed with crisp NM Actions 1's ...
well it will likely turn out that it was sailed in from Asia (freshly minted ).
Lots of this hearsay (on insane hoarding with the effect of a great number # of copies amassed) might likely turn out to be BS if attempted verified
A full short box exclusively stuffed with raw AF15 surely seems insane (or somehow a little abnormal a little like these arab Sheiks who has 60-80 kids each
It might be insane, but G.A.tor said he saw it with his own eyeballs:
http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2486186&fpart=654
Which is proof enough for me.
well, an average joe six pack like me can hardly compete with the sheer amount of street cred gator has got goin for himself here on the boards. So I obvioulsy bow to his testimony on this case of insane hoarding ...
still sounds kind a sick to me with a full short box of af15. For christ sake leave a copy or two for us latecommers

60K for a lowgrade funny book (which isnt even the 1st app.) = A tough market to enter. It takes deep pockets to play in the deep end of the pool these days ...
With a little luck they'll come down ...
