  1. DC-Marvel Digest Lot: Six DC Digests from 1981-83, pair of Marvel Illustrated books from ‘81, & FF Whitman softcover from ‘68.
  2. Dammit! I have all my money tied up in Beanie Babies and I can’t get it out until after Thanksgiving! Stupid! Stupid! I knew I should remain liquid just for situations like this. Oh well, lesson learned.
  3. Couldn’t agree more that he’s underrated/unappreciated. As far as I’m concerned he’s a legend just for two facts alone: 1. His character/rogues gallery-defining run on Flash; 2. The fact that without him, the favorite book of my childhood (and arguably the first and biggest event book of the 70’s) might never have existed - Superman vs Spider-Man. I’m very happy to have a piece of his OA hanging on my wall - from his Nova run. It was something I didn’t love at the time but as I grew older I liked it more and more until it went onto my want list!
  4. I'm pretty sure I've worked out the gifts for my SS. But until we bring up the Christmas tree decorations (with the superhero wrapping paper) I have time in case there's anything else I want to add...
  5. In pre-pandemic days, we had a few yard sales… and when we did, I always put out box of comics labeled (free - for kids!) knowing that kids get dragged to those things with their folks and they were a big hit! Also, and I know this advice is a bit too late for this year, but a few years ago when I had bought a small collection off of someone, I ended up giving away books at Halloween and they were a hit too (not in lieu of candy - I didn’t want TP on our house, but in addition to!)
  6. So what you’re saying, if I’m reading that correctly, is that anyone who gets you as their SS, should — assuming they do NOT have multiple high grade copies of every single golden and silver age key — expect to receive those as gifts from you? Very exciting!! P.S. I do NOT have multiple copies of every single golden and silver age key P.P.S - if it helps, I also do not have single high grade copies of every single golden and silver age key P.P.P.S - in addition, I also do not have just regular old “copies” of every single golden and silver age key Just sayin’…. 😉😂
  7. In all seriousness… I hope people who, looking a past years’ threads of people posting what they received are not intimidated to the point where they wont participate. I wouldn’t presume to speak for everyone or even the majority, but I’d wager a good number of us do this year in and year out because we have fun shopping for fellow boardies. Everyone knows that people have different means, so I am always incredibly appreciative of whatever I receive, as I know someone took the time to pick it out for me . Yes I gave a generic list, but I also specifically said I’ve enjoyed every SS gift I’ve gotten and I’m sure this year will be no exception! I guess to that last point - if you are participating, part of the social contract you’re making is showing your appreciation to your SS. Post photos when you open to share with the group, a private note saying how much you liked it. Not very difficult but it makes a world of difference! Frank PS if you’re really stressed out what to get someone… go to their profile, see if there’s info there and/or check out the threads they’re posted in… books they’ve bought, etc. I believe the term is “casual stalking” 🤔😁
  8. I honestly think you can look at this issue from two angles - did the comic industry squander its share of the entertainment marketplace, or did the rest of the marketplace around it grow so fast that losing it's share was inevitable? I mean, let's face it - for those of us who grew up on comics in the 70's and 80's what was the entertainment competition? There was no internet, just the very beginnings of the video game industry (first arcades and then early home systems), and we went from three TV networks to early basic cable, but no such thing as a DVR... the VCR was the "wow" invention when it hit. So the weekly run to the comic store was a big deal! Kids today? Why on early pay $4 $5 for PART of a story about characters they like... when they stream 20+ movies or series about them, play hours of immersive video games AS them... and so forth. Our son (now 25) grew up loving comics and superheroes because I did. He collected action figures, read books, etc... and now in his life that means he sees all the movies, watches all the shows... and stays on top of all the entertainment version of all his favorite characters. And he loves that, from a nostalgia perspective, I have a comic collection that he'll inherit some day. But he has not picked up an actual comic book since he was 10 years old. And he's someone who is deeply knowledgeable about, for example, the whole Marvel Universe. When we saw Eternals no one had to explain to him who Pip the Troll was (not that that's THAT much of a deep cut, but you get the drift). So for ALL the failings that the industry has brought on itself -- hey, I abandoned comics myself during the 90's... and today I pick and choose some selected Modern stuff, and totally agree the art can seem preposterous. But there are also some quality people working in the field today. To dismiss them is to miss some great stuff. The talk of "wokeness" as an issue... is ...to me... a bit silly. But hey, people use certain things as reason to take a stand or be loud on social media. Good for them. Anyway, what do I think the industry can do (from a non-comic shop owner perspective?) 1 - Reduce the number of books. Sorry to say, but I think that's a huge cause of the problem. Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, etc... the biggies should always be in production on their monthly schedule. But the little books? That have to keep getting rebooted to get noticed? What happens is everyone buys the #1, and then the shelves are full of unread #2s, and the back issue bins are full of 3s, 4s, etc... just a waste. No one is going to pick up a #3 of a book they've never read. And many people won't even pick up a #1 of a title they aren't sure of. 2. Start using Trades as FIRST RUN books. Instead of reprinting past issues, for smaller books, instead of throwing a #1 on the stand and hoping it sells... wait and throw out a TPB with a first-run arc or limited series with issues #1-5. That way, a new reader can pick up a complete arc and read it. If they're in a comic store they are buying a WHOLE story. Just as if they were streaming a movie. They're not used to buying PART of something anymore. No one has patience. And if it sells, then go ahead and do another... change creative teams, etc.. but only full arcs. From a collector's standpoint, these would have the same value as single-issues... they'd have first appearances, etc. They wouldn't be reprints. And I think they'd sell. 3. Stop with the multi-book crossovers, or, if you're going to do them - see #2 above. Multi-character crossovers are great. Introduce fans of one character to another. But this isn't a scavenger hunt. That's all I've got.
  9. Totally agree on Tom’s watchability. We saw Tom on Broadway pre-pandemic and he was phenomenal. Actually it was he and Charlie Cox, co-starring in Betrayal (a Pinter play). If you’ve ever seen that hilarious photo of Tom as Daredevil and Charlie as Loki, that show (their working together) was its origin. But I digress… As for Loki? I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the character development, thought it was well-cast, thought the time travel stuff was handled well… and I could see it setting the path for future events without being beholden to JUST doing that. That being said, despite some earlier successes, Disney+ shows are very much crying out for putting the creative direction of each series in the hands of (hopefully) talented show runners. The “start writing and see where it leads us…” has run out of magic.
  10. Just binged it over the last two days. Fantastic. I loved the comics but they’re constantly taking the comic storylines and making them broader and more interesting for the show. This was really great. Can’t wait for Boys Season 4, and now GenV season 2!
  11. Great piece! That art literally could have been a DPS from an early Marvel Team-Up. Thanks for sharing.
  12. I’m with you, and I guess a bit more extreme. 😂 Every single piece of art I own is on my walls. It’s why I buy them, so I can enjoy them. It’s actually why I’m ok selling books and using the proceeds for art because I feel like the books were sitting in a box and the art’s on the wall. Because of that, and because of all the horror stories I’ve heard people had tracking down artists for commissions I simply don’t see the value of them (for me) from a cost/benefit standpoint. Don’t get me wrong I think there are some incredible commissions out there and I own some - because I bought completed pieces after the fact. That seems like such a more practical method. You can’t be dissatisfied if you’re buying a finished piece. I did commission one piece - with Alan Kupperberg in what turned out to be the final months of his life, sadly. He was a very nice guy. The experience was wonderful and I cherish the piece and the memory of getting to know him a bit. But from everything I’ve read since I feel like I got a bit of beginner’s luck on that one. BTW - I can 100% why people who have very specific collections go the commission route - it’s the only way to get exactly what they want/need. Like I said, the above is completely my personal preference … no judgement on commissions in general. Just what works for me.
  13. I loved it when it first came out… I was less of a fan with the turn the storyline took towards the end, but the characters of Nova and Richard Rider I liked very much. I was also really happy when he returned as a key part of the New Warriors years later.
  14. Yup, still have mine. Bought it about 15 years ago. I said to my wife that it would be "fun" to get a piece of art to put on my office wall... and now I think my next piece will be my 29th and I have like two wall spots left in the entire office/comic room.
  15. He may very well have been QUITE famous among those in your area who had troubles upgrading from Windows '95 to Windows '98 back in the day... so if any of those folks are here, these books still might hold some extra sizzle. Don't sell yourself short, is my point. GLWTS!!
