  1. GoCollect owner/founder here - Jeff Meyer. I'm no rookie to buying comics. My niche is high-grade, classic GA covers (http://blog.gocollect.com/my-golden-age-comic-collection/). I don't want to even admit how much I've spent over the past few years in public auctions. I still use GPA, but I started GoCollect because GPA has zero transparency. If you trust that one 8.0 is the same as any other 8.0, that's the rookie mistake. If you want to see where a book sold and link to it so that you can investigate pictures.... now you're truly utilizing the value of GoCollect. And if you want to do a search for a book using an actual number... GC will get you there faster.... and if you want reference pictures... and if you want to easily slice/dice lists... and if you want to look up CGC cert numbers with friendly output... and if you want to model your own values... and if you want to see sales of "the other grading team"... and if you want... I could go on and on for how GoCollect offers a great supplement and/or replacement to GPA. Full disclosure, I use GPA myself. I circle back to it when I'm curious to see if they might display some sales that GC doesn't have listed. GC currently tracks sale links back to eBay, Hake's, ComicConnect, ComicLink and Heritage. That said, if all you've done is analyze GoCollect using the FMV values... you haven't experienced all it has to offer. At which point I can understand your position. Thanks Tim
  2. Rick is a class act all the way. Our first transaction was 5 figures and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Thanks!
  3. I had some requests to put my collection up on Instagram, so I have a nice hoard out of the safety of the bank for a few days I'm taking pics now and going to post slowly over there @gocollectcomics if anyone wants to see (yes - shameless plug). Here were my favorite pickups from 2018 - I'm just happy I didn't have to pick only 3 to post this year!
  4. Couldn't agree more. BUT who's hypnotizing who here? He looks like the one that's about to start clucking like a chicken BTW - is that a bracelet she has on or did bondage covers make it to the backs too?
  5. Part of me wishes these were all still together... in a museum somewhere that I could take a trip to every so often to take pictures and do research. Edgar's passion was (in my mind) the best thing that ever happened to the GA slice of this hobby. I JUST WANT TO DIVE INTO THOSE PILES!
  6. Thanks to ComicConnect: https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=744129
  7. GREAT topic! I'm a big fan of the back covers. I get a cheap thrill from a few things on back covers - I'm pretty easy to please Pretending I'm a kid in the 40's in awe of what I could possibly order (microscope - the colors in person make we want to send away today) Pretending I'm a kid in the 40's in general (Baby Ruth ad just feels so damn wholesome) (Dynamic Comics #22 pictured below) Well drawn/colored ads for other books and/or characters (Catman #13 pictured below)
  8. This has been bugging me since receiving my latest invoice from the last auction. The book below could cost some folks $935 more than what I ended up with as the final hammer ($13,800). Backstory: I recently moved from IL to NC. I didn't yet have my NC sales tax number on file with Heritage, but I had changed my address to receive catalogs. I got my invoice and it had an additional $935 for sales tax. Since I use my own system, I saw this book pop up on my GoCollect watch list and it hit me... we have no idea who does and does not pay sales tax. I checked my GPA account and apparently they don't either. Here's the thing - I would have paid a few grand more for this book, so if the confusion of the sales tax didn't flesh out, I would just pay it. But then the world would think I paid $13,800 instead of $14,735... that's pretty significant difference! And even though I have no intentions of selling any time soon, I'm well aware that the price I paid will be a consideration to the next buyer.... whenever that day may come. Most of us use past sales history to determine the prices we're willing to pay at these auctions. And Heritage is a special player in that they get great GA inventory and generally command top prices (at least for the stuff I hunt down). All while charing a lot of folks sales tax now. So, is it possible that by not factoring sales tax into sale history that we're artificially keeping valuations down? Part of me thinks "Phew! Please keep them as low as possible!" but that doesn't feel good for the hobby as a whole. Or who knows - maybe we all have sales tax numbers and it's meaningless. At the end of the day, I was super happy to land this beauty I hope the colors pop in-hand as much as they do in the pictures!
  9. Coupon codes for 30 day trials were removed a while back. However, if you try it and don't like it, just contact us through the site and we'll gladly refund your first month payment. Subscription cancellation has no BS attached - you can cancel very easily from either your GoCollect or PayPal account. The site has had numerous advances since this thread originally launched... some of the original info on the earlier posts here is no longer accurate. Have a great weekend!
  10. Good gawd! I intentionally stepped away from looking/hunting for the past couple months to focus on a different collectible that has sparked my interest. It's now apparent that I'll be spending more cash next month than I originally anticipated Looks like someone threw in the towel on completing a Catman run. I was considering doing the same, but now see some holes there that can be filled. Sheesh! Will it ever end!?!
  11. I know the Golden Age comics market pretty well, but unfortunately I'm not familiar with OA. I recently stumbled upon the complete OA story for Classics Illustrated #73 from 1950. The cover isn't there, but all 44 pages are present. The quality of the art is solid, but it's not the most exciting art. It looks like single pages sell on the Bay for around a hundred bucks. But I'm curious to know: Is it all all rare to have the complete story? Does having the complete story increase the overall value at all? Any idea of value? Thanks in advance for any/all help. - Jeff
  12. Fantoman #3 - $114 at 2.0. 9 total graded. 7 in universal holders. 9.0 = highest graded...
  13. Choice Comics #3. One of my personal favorite covers. OSG (2017-18) at $194 in 2.0. 6 on the census. The 9.0 is the Church copy and is actually no longer in the CGC holder (it's on my to-do list). When I acquired, it was in a Voledemort holder...
  14. Amazing Mystery Funnies v2 #2. OSG has it pretty underpriced (in my 2017-18 copy), but it meets the threshold at $245 in 2.0. 8 total copies on the census, 7 are Universal. 8.0 as highest graded.
  15. Nice! I was tormenting myself for a while trying to complete a Chesler run... never got a chance to pick on of these up. Tough book.
  16. I ran some queries. The bad news is that the footprint we on GoCollect have for GA books with a match to the CGC census is pretty low, but growing daily. And, of course, I don't have a database of Overstreet values, so I used the following criteria relating to past sales... 2.0 >= $200 4.0 >= $400 6.0 >= $600 8.0 >= $1500 9.0 >= $2500 Below is the list I came up with where total population (not just Universal) was 10 copies or less that had been sold in in the grades/prices outlined above. I'd imagine this is substantially less than the applicable population, but should provide some fun... 17. I'd be happy to help here with some simple database queries against both the CGC API and the known sales over the past handful of years. Just need a little clarity... Is that all graded copies being 10 or less? Or is it okay to say known Universal graded copies to be 10 or less?
  18. I wonder if there's any high grade Suspense 8's out there. Census shows 4 at 7.0 and 3 at 7.5, none higher. With highest graded being a 7.5, I have a tough time imagining the best graded copies commanding crazy prices... but this market shocks the hell out of me all the time! I hold this 7.0 that I'd LOVE to upgrade, but I fear that may be a near-impossible task.
  19. Just resubmits without sending in the original label. I've seen it quite a few times. I try to always investigate as many past sale images as I can find when analyzing scarcity based on census numbers. The good part about collecting classic Gold is that it's a fairly small population of goodies with a lot of inventory info if you're willing to do the research. To be honest, I didn't know so many folks out here crack their slabs. I would love to, but I'm too paranoid when I pay such crazy premiums for, say, a 9.4 vs. a 9.2. I guess I don't send enough in to feel confident in how it will come back.
