  1. I'm thrilled... been hunting for solid copies of both of my wins today for far too long
  2. And bouncing between grading services is really making it tough to assign values... further skewing census info. What was a CGC 7.5 https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/amazing-mystery-funnies-23-centaur-1940-cgc-vf-75-off-white-to-white-pages/a/7166-91016.s Is now a 9.0 (but still represented as a 7.5) https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/amazing-mystery-funnies-23-centaur-1940-cbcs-vf-nm-90-off-white-to-white-pages/a/7177-91047.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 On a positive note - it speaks to the rarity of the gems we collect. Picture hunting is getting more important.
  3. Frazetta always stands out to me. I wish there were more covers (damn my addiction to graded books).
  4. Tell me about it! I'm holding on to hope that some folks are broke by the time the CC auction starts to close. Wish in one hand...
  5. I'm posing this question to folks here in the GA forum because it tends to only matter to me for GA books.... When a book gets regraded... and "moved up" does the old census count reference get removed? Does anyone know a way to verify whether a certain cert # was re-purposed?. There's a nice GA 9.8 (that was sold several years ago in a 9.6 holder) that I have my eye on. The 9.6 Cert # no longer comes up in the verification tool. It was regraded a 9.8 (at least in its current holder) just a few months ago. I've come across this scenario too many times while considering five figure purchases... so it felt like it was time to get some advice.
  6. Easier said than done. If I could quickly push/pull large sums of money in and out of GA books, life would be that much more beautiful!
  7. It couldn't hurt. The one that sold for 5,600 was a Best Offer from a 6,500 BIN. But a 6.0 closed on eBay auction in late Dec for only 1,160. Seems to me like the seller was in the right place at the right time.
  8. If today's market continues to pull back hard (and remains in a "corrected" state), I think we could see a noticeable impact on the high-profile auctions at the end of the month. It would be really interesting to see a study on any historic correlation. I'd be willing to bet it opens up a buying opportunity in some price ranges and may even open a selling opportunity in others.
  9. Agreed. It could either be setup as an alternate investment fund or even a simple stockholder corp. I'd probably prefer the latter.
  10. What about other macroeconomic trends? Personally, the markets would have to absorb a major, short-term correction for me to pause on buying. Even then I wonder if comic prices would pull back and create a buying opportunity.
  11. This is tricky business (to put it mildly). How do you agree on a buy price? When do you sell? What if someone wants to sell only their portion? Where is it stored? How do you take on new investors? What's the next book to buy!? But... I love it. I've heard these exist, but have never talked with anyone that's been involved in one. If there are folks out there that are truly interested, I'd be happy to explore this with you (I have owned, bought and sold several businesses over the past 20 years). I'm near Chicago. Getting all of the ducks in a row prior to the Feb auction could be a challenge, but I'm up for it.
  12. Awesome to see true colors shine! Things my eyes quickly glaze over when seeing: Archie, Romance, Disney, and pretty much any "cartooney" stuff (regardless of how old/rare/significant... just makes me sleepy)
  13. There are a ton of "variants" one Great Comics #1 one too. The census shows many from Novak, but only 2 are marked with Jubilee Publications as the publisher. I don't have a raw copy of the Jubilee version, so I can't see inside. But the cover has a very minor difference - The Novak version has "LNC" in the upper left corner on the cover. The Jubilee version has "SND" near the bottom left of the G (from Great) in vertical letters. CGC also lists a "Jubilee" variant within the Novak publisher. Text is simply overprinted in indicia (still has LNC on cover, not SND). From my research, the Jubilee Publications version is quite rare, oddly enough. I'd personally love to know more if any historians out there are familiar.
  14. Heritage sold this same copy in 2005 & 2007. Should be a very interesting barometer of GA change 10+ years later.
  15. What's your guess on the final hammer for this 9.0 beauty? http://comiclink.com/auctions/item.asp?back=%2FAUCTIONS%2FPREVIEW.ASP%3Fcode%3D2018feb%23Item_1215759&id=1215759&itemType=0
  16. So many gorgeous books. The colors on that Wings 82 are out of this world... almost makes me wonder if it's a filtered image. I've never seen her dress look red like that.
  17. This is the only 10 I see. 9.9's are also very rare. I show only 19 from 1938-1955: Gotta love this one:
  18. I think the buyer perspective is worth weighing in on here. After all, it's the buyer that determines the sale price. For GA auctions, I only look at Heritage, Clink and CConnect. Heritage: I get nailed with sales tax, but for some reason, I rarely consider it in my purchase price. I enjoy the fact that it's a traditional auction and find that I can quickly get caught up in the focused bidding on a single book and overpay. ComicConnect: The three minute thing drives me nutty. And when I'm hunting multiple books at once, I find I can accidentally lose a book I would have paid more for due to focus on another set of books. In other words, the final hammer on a book I missed could have been higher. ComicLink: I tend to be in or out on these due to the fixed end time. I wait until the final seconds, put in my highest price and hope for the best. I get a lot of my best prices paid from them, but the final hammer likely suffers from my inability to get caught up in any bidding war (sometimes my rational highest I'd like to pay isn't the same as my "excited" highest to pay). All that said, you could always do what a lot of the flippers do and put it up on eBay at some ridiculous fixed price to see if you get anyone there. If that fails, pick your favorite from the above. Worth noting - I never personally look at eBay much for this exact reason.
  19. Merry Christmas! I can't wait to see what GA books are under the tree for me (haha)!
  20. Modeling the sales data shows a consistent value across 1.0-1.5 with an estimation at $1,600.
  21. I'm looking to buy more than sell in 2018. I have 2 people living inside of me - one is a collector that's completing/upgrading a handful of runs and the other is more of an investor. My collector side doesn't seem to care what the final hammer is so long as I want it. The investor side is always looking for the right price on a high-quality book. So my goals are to meet the needs of both sides: 1) [Collector] Pickup any grade of a missing copy where I have holes. There are too many that I've held out for high grades on for too long and I'm beginning to fear they'll never come around. 2) [Collector] Not start any new runs - focus on existing to free up cash for the investor. 3) [Investor] Finalize my GA valuation model (getting close!) and put it to good use within the following areas: classic covers, Gerber 7+ books, exciting/colorful (female) bondage covers, high-grade copies of early DC and Timely titles.
  22. They sure look like the same book to me. Damage across the top is identical. The spine damage points are nearly identical if you assume some color touch occurred. Even the discoloration on the spine is the same. Not trying to be argumentative, I just think it's important not to dismiss this sort of thing. This sale ensured that I'll personally be staying away from books graded by that company. Sale #1 https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=652911 Sale #2 https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=738425
  23. Me too... until I realized the same. CC sold it over last summer for half the final hammer, but it was a 1.0 CGC at the time: https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=652911 Definitely some color touch.
  24. Great thread! Just realized I need to figure out how to take pics of my books when the scanner's dead. Tough to pick out my favs, but a few I was really happy to track down...
