  1. I'll be trimming over the next few weeks... mainly GA stuff. I am posting in batches, by run to begin (lots of non-run stuff to come too). I'll provide a preview link for each batch. Preview links will contain the best quality images and display asking prices (forum uploads seem compressed a bit). However, pics and prices will also be listed here and the transactions will be 100% through this forum/thread/PM.

I do apologize for my scanner. It casts a glare sometimes. It also has a tendency to washout colors a bit (light reds are also looking pink, when they shouldn't). I'm happy to take photos for any individuals that would like to see them.

    Rules:

    - First "Take it" trumps PM negotiations
    - No Hall of Shamers or Probation List folks
    - Payment is via PayPal only and must be received within 3 days of "take it"
    - Returns are not accepted on graded books. If it gets damaged in transit a shipping claim will need to be made.
    - Shipping is free in the US via USPS Priority with insurance. If you're outside of US, please PM me for a quote.

The Jon Berk auction inspired me start this run (as you'll see). But after beginning the hunt (note that I'm a "highest graded" junkie), I realized this mission would likely take longer than I can tolerate. If you're anything like me, this is your chance to pick up some once-in-a-lifetime grabs for this insanely difficult run.

    Spirit 22 CGC 9.6:popcorn:

Amazing :cloud9: But (OCD kicking in) it bugs me that the description reads "This unreal copy is tied with the Mile High copy for the highest grade ever awarded for the book." They sold the Church copy back in 2011 when it was still a 9.6, but it's since been upgraded to a 9.8.

Am I a fool to think the folks that will be bidding against me on this one will simply take that statement as truth?

I get a cheap thrill from chasing high-grade books and I'm generally willing to pay that much more when I know it's the highest graded copy out there. I guess I'm just hoping that others who do the same are also out there doing their research.

At the risk of being more of a geek than anyone here (and that's setting the bar pretty high), any curve can be approximated by a straight line if you don't go too far. The 'price per point' will sorta kinda work if the curve is straightish. Here's a curve I interpolated from the Overstreet relative values back when I was trying to work out prices for the 'in between' grades.

    cost-grade-curve.PNG.a234ca6dbfda22a6ffcba28711d348ee.PNG

As others have said, up until about 6.0 a straight line fit is OK. After that not so much.

If only Overstreet was rooted in reality... I've love to pickup GA books using this curve as a cost basis!

  4. I've personally done a ton of study on the comic market as a whole over the past ~3 years. PPP assumes a linear relationship between grade and price, which does exist in some books, but RARELY in GA. It generally exists in the books where there are high volumes of sales and only within a tight band of low-mid grades (easily attainable silver/bronze stuff). And that tight band depends on the individual book.

In GA, even with the most frequently sold books, linear relationships between grade and $$ just don't exist in any sort of predictable manner... even in those low-mid grade bands.

The algorithm I personally use to price books is based on grade, past sales, relational values of past sales (i.e. what were 4.0's selling for when that 9.2 sold in the open market), quantity in CGC census at given grade and above, how often the book has sold over the past year (in any grade), and on and on. It's non-linear... and (frankly) very difficult to apply any sort of rules to when speaking in general terms. The algorithm works really great to predict estimates in the silver age and later. It proves to be time and time again in the GA market where are logic is thrown out the window meh But I think that's part of the reason I love the GA stuff.

At the end of the day, if it works for you - use it!

  5. Thanks a ton to everyone for the feedback so far. It's been both valuable and entertaining!

So far I'm not hearing anything that says it's a good time to pause on buying my favorite niche areas of GA. Hopefully that's not my addiction passion getting the best of me;)

Re. why I think there may be a bust...

Let's just call it pure opinion. I hope I'm wrong, but my gut tells me the amount of flipping I'm seeing of books that are less than 3 months old is gaining traction and isn't likely to end well.

  6. I was in high school in the early 90's and had been profiting from the modern book sales by traveling around, dealing at shows in Florida (GA didn't exist in my world at the time). I left the hobby after heading off to college and returned just a handful of years ago with a core interest in GA books.

Can some of you long-time GA collectors tell me what that 90s bubble bust did to GA (maybe even SA) interest?

IMO we are setup to hit another bust in modern any time within the next couple years.

With the GA stuff I like (classic covers, rare stuff, shock covers across genres, etc.) exploding in cost recently, I'm considering whether I should pause on buying for a while or push through.

One of the things that excites me the most about GA is the rarity compared to the rest of the hobby. The "hunt" is real... you can get truly excited to see a low grade copy. I love seeing "classic" books that have 20 copies on the census. I see nothing but growth for this sector of the hobby. But like any other alternate investment, it will always have its short-cycle ups and downs.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

  7. I'd guess this
    http://comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fbids.asp&id=1236874

would have sold for more if this
    http://comiclink.com/Auctions/item.asp?back=%2FComicTrack%2FAuctions%2Fbids.asp&id=1207018

    was a published sale.

I get that some sales don't sell as high as they'd like, but let's face it - that happens on all sites.

My point is they tend to get nice GA inventory and when they're the only ones recently selling high grades of a rare book, they're kind of doing themselves a disservice... no?
