Nope- I just clicked the link- which is raw with color touch at 2223 and 6 days left ...

I didn’t think that was the auction you were referring to in your comment. The link is actually to an auction that ended, but then eBay suggests a similar item, which is the one you are referring to.

I believe the higher offers you see are from the seller's counter offer that were declined by the buyers.

I've seen this before with other auctions where higher offers were declined and a lesser offer was taken.

That would make sense, but two of the higher amounts seem to be standalone, ie there is no lower bid associated with the same ID. And one of them is the earliest bid.

The $3400 bid right before the accepted one definitely seems to be a counteroffer.

I somewhat disagree - I love low grade presentable copies that have clearly been well loved (for silver age keys) as I can see the original owner reading it hundreds of times and folding it and putting it in his/her back pocket etc. (Don't get me wrong budget also dictates that I buy lower grade keys :) ).  It is somewhat similar as to why for copper books I much prefer newsstand copies because I can picture them being purchased at a local newsstand or corner store and for the purpose of being read as opposed to collected ....

That’s another good reason to enjoy a book (though it doesn’t really excite me). The difference is, a book that looks like it’s been enjoyed by many other readers doesn’t take me back to when the book came out. Maybe for those who got a lot of their comics second hand that’s more of an attraction?

This reminds me of a passage from a book I read once concerning why collectors seek out high grade comics---it's because we're reliving our memories, and the nicer the book is, the clearer the memory. I rather liked that...

When you think about it, it makes sense. A comic which appears brand new takes you back to the time the comic came out. A yellowed, creased up comic does not.

You guys can hide it but unless you bought the comic when it was 10 or 15 cents or dirt cheap years ago, you're in it as an investment now. Unless you're a millionaire.

Just not true. Comics are just about the only thing I spend money on recreationally. I buy 9.6s and 9.8s of titles I am interested in (Bronze Superman books, etc.) simply because I enjoy high grade books. I have no expectation that they will appreciate in value, nor do I care.

Even those buying 9.8s of major keys (not me) have reasons other than investment: pride of ownership, etc.

  6. Finally a member of this club. Was looking for an attractive 9.4 for awhile. This copy is very nice except for the “serrated” right edge (that was discussed earlier in this thread). This defect doesn’t really bother me. In addition, the slab was all scratched up, but I experimented with cleaning it up using plastX, and the results were very good.

  7. I have a Detective 27 Famous First Edition inner cover framed and hanging in my living room where it is NOT receiving direct sunlight. Yet the red area behind the title is so faded after ten years that it looks awful. I don’t display anything of value or importance.

  8. I’ve been noticing lately that when I click on an auction for a CGC graded book, a lot of times a small stock photo of an ungraded copy is the first picture that comes up. It has happened over many different sellers, so it doesn’t seem like something the seller is responsible for. Does anyone know what the deal is?
