If I were auctioning a piece valued at five figures, I would check the web site early and often to see what the listing looked like. I would notice when the image didn't match the piece in my collection.

    Maybe that's just me.

Almost all the auction lots come from this guy's collection. He is a big big big collector who already sold tons of art at previous auctions.

I can really think he didn't even watch the catalog.

...it's Art Nouveau they identify with, not any individual artist. This is the stuff of retro alcohol labels and advertising, the odd revival poster for turn of the century plays, etc. Nobody is looking at the signatures, nobody cares Mucha versus Toulouse-Lautrect, etc...

You found the JSC and wanted to know more which took you back to HTL. Not vice versa, which is what JSC did. He did it because he knew it would work, it's an easy reference that sells, even though nobody (for the most part) knows HTL from Mucha from Adam...they 'know' (of a sort) Art Nouveau.

Must be true to say nobody cares about the signatures because Campbell made a copy of Steinlen, not Toulouse Lautrec.

It is written on the side of the signature.

I think the Wolverine/punisher cover is the better cover when compared to the remaining stock, it’s just that I’m not convinced that the original buyer, whomever that might be, paid less than $1500 for it. In other words, there wasn’t much, if any, appreciation on that, or as someone hoped.

This cover was listed at $750 on SplashPage a couple of months back.

I have them and that was my first thought unfortunately i currently live overseas and my issues are in storage back in the states.  If anyone has LOTDK 10-15 and can check for me i would really appreciate it.  Thanks

The original art for this ad was shown last year at the "Art of DC comics exhibition" in Paris. Wonderful art, brings back nice memories.

  5. Very sad story, I still can't believe they packed the art so poorly. They should have asked you to use a professional transporter for shipping (like some auction houses asked me to do for valuable items). The package is not better than the one I picked up directly at their offices.

  6. After finally getting back my submitted 103, which was 9.6 I finally have a 100% full CGC graded run in 5.0 or better. Yay me!

    Great ! Congratulations Sam !

Shameless plug- I'm also selling some of my accumulated undercopies tomorrow in the SA sales thread.

Can be good news for Showcase collectors.

Too bad, I have dropped collecting comig books since last year. There must be great things in your undercopies !

  7. Does anybody know which is the first actual DC greytone cover? hm

Once read that the first grey tone was Showcase #3 cover but I think Overstreet guide lists Star Spangled War Stories #45.

I remember a thread about this on the boards but could not find it, it must be there. hm

I think Showcase #3 and All American Men of War #35 came out the same month ,Star Spangled War Stories #45 just one month earlier. So it might be one of them.

  8. That's one of the annoying aspects of the registry, that completeness of a set is not given any credit, only how much a person is willing to spend on a given copy of a book. Something should be said for the effort that goes into building an almost impossible to complete set like Showcase. Kudos to you Chris! I am honored you named your 1-64 set in, well, my honor. But seriously you deserve all the credit!

    That's absolutely true.

Congratulations to Chris and the few others who completed the run.

I think about you of course Boba with your 1-64 set, that was a great one !

  9. Well, wallstreetrebel just dropped a bomb in his Showcase registry set. He upgraded his SC4 to a 9.2 :o

It is now the best set for both Flash and Green lantern runs :

    SC4 9.2 3rd highest graded, 3 books highergraded

    SC8 9.2 highest graded

    SC13 8.5 3rd highest, 2 higher

    SC 14 9.0 highest graded

    SC 22 9.0 : 2nd grade, 1 higher

    SC 23 9.2 : 2nd grade, 1 higher

    SC 24 9.0 : highest graded

I think it will be difficult to beat him this year...

  10. Indeed it is. What is that double what it used to sell at that grade?

If they ever announce a movie that book will go stratospheric!

Maybe people found out (at last) that Adam Strange issues are great...

Is it not the only explanation to see prices go higher and higher ???

    ;)

I wonder how much Mystery in Space #53 is worth these days...
