  1. You know the saying that analog sounds better / different than digital? Same sort of thing here. The code is trying to imitate the image but it's never an exact representation. It's just doing it as close as possible, and usually close enough so that a casual glance wouldn't notice any differences but upon scrutiny (like in the comparison in the 1st post) you start to notice the differences between scans. That's why you get ghost defects in scans - spine stresses that aren't really there, dust shadows looking darker than they actually are, etc. I've seen scans where a book looks tanned but isn't when held inhand. Also, I find that you get what you pay for and more expensive scanners take better scans than cheaper ones. but some scanners are just not made for slabs no matter what you do.
  2. Did it look good for the grade? Is it possible the book was upgradeable? That's generally what I find when a book goes for stupid money. Not every time but often.
  3. Scanners convert a picture into a code of 1s and 0s. Then it converts it back to a picture from 1s and 0s. Think of converting a paragraph from English to another language and then having a 2nd translator convert the paragraph back to English no real references from the 1st source material. You'd have differences between the 1st English paragraph and the 2nd. You'll never end up with exactly the same paragraph. Touching up the picture with photoshop scrambles the image even more. the best you can do is try to get the image as close to the original as possible but it will never be exactly like holding the book in hand.
  4. Is it possible that the Marvel rep that pulled the stunt in the article in fact wasn't a Marvel rep? I wouldn't put it beneath someone to play that sort of prank.
  5. Those shows still exist. They just don't get as much commercial recognition. It's funny, everyone is now on the nerd bandwaon and it's acool to be a nerd, but only if it's a cool-nerd (ie hipster). If you're still a nerd-nerd it's still not cool.
  6. Do you remember the awe of getting a signature by your favorite celebrity? It's not up to the management of the celebrity to define whether you're a fan or not.
  7. It's dreadful. A company whose content used to be all about the human condition (and what made them great) now has no clue. Something like this can backfire so badly if it goes viral and they have no idea
  8. I know hobbyists don't like to talk about this but ultimately, everyone is just trying to make a living. Artists, con promoters, handlers, sig series employees. They're just all trying to make an honest buck. They can just adjust allowable numbers, charges or logistics to tailor to the market. Honor can be satisfied (as they say in England) without off a huge portion of the fan base.
  9. Fri was much less busy than Saturday. I didn't go to the show on Sun. Saturday was absolutely insane. Even the massive hallways leading to the to the McCormick convention center were so crowded you couldn't walk through them without bumping into people. They had a DJ in the hallway and there were literally 100's of people and cosplayers hanging out and dancing.
  10. Those scans were made with different scanners. Just look at the blues on the two labels. They are different. The Curator pedigree is arguably one of the nicest preserved SA Pedigrees of all time. The books were meticulously stored by a museum curator in the museum he worked in. If the colors look stronger on the 7.0 it's either because the scanner is sharper or in production the color strike just happened to be better for the 7.0 copy over all. There is no way I'd ever use the words 'underwhelming' and 'curator' in the same sentence.
  11. 100% agree. Friday seemed busy but Saturday was scary at times. It was cool to see how a Con looked while wearing a costume but when you have 20 people shouting for a picture it can get overwhelming. The sea of people coming out of the upstairs panels was a bit anxiety inducing. Yeah, the posing was really getting out of hand at times. When the crowd is so thick you can't move and THEN you have people stopping cosplayers to create a grid lock it became quite annoying at times. There were a few times I really needed to be somewhere and couldn't move.
  12. I understand that, but there is no way they could know that so you have to draw the line somewhere. From a person who has stood in line for one signature for this and the guy next to me has 10 books.(And has piles of others in a box.) he wants signed I can understand their reasoning. Its hard to single one out instead they have to do a blanket policy. So why not just limit sigs? If you want more sigs you get back into line. Solution seems pretty simple.
  13. I'm not a sig series fan either but that doesn't mean that someone who collects sig series isn't a real fan.
  14. There's no way they should be telling people in line how to have their books signed IMO. It's a debate about economics, not people and they should treat it as such.
  15. I've never seen more cosplay at a show than at C2E2 this weekend. At time sit looked like half the crowd was cosplaying, and it was a busy crowd. By far the largest crowd I've ever seen at this show. It was crazy Friday and too crowded on Saturday.

  17. How aggresive? Cc auction results aggresive?? Storms had a CGC 2.5 @ $12,500 I saw another 1.5 @ $12,500 As of Saturday afternoon, they still hadn't sold. Not many AF #15's on display at this show. May have been another one or two copies but I can't remember at this time.
  18. Incredible Hulk #181 CGC 9.2 has now SOLD! Back cover for Rawhide Kid #26 CGC 9.4 now added as per request.
  19. There were a few that sold. I think someone hit a BIN for $24K on a 4.5 a few weeks ago. Easy to check if you just filter SOLD listings in Advanced Search.
  20. Maybe. I also don't watch a lot of auctions. I'm on the road a lot and so miss many of them.
  21. Like most people I don't have 6 figures lying around. But if I was prepared at the time I would have. I did think the book was undergraded as it was being auctioned off. But none of this is really germane to the discussion at hand.
  22. There is no question to this. Nobody is saying that AF #15 hasn't been getting more expensive. Those big sales last year would have trickled down to the lower grades much quicker if that was the case. It's just that this latest surge was triggered by 3 copies that set record prices in CC. The fact that before and after eBay prices 'blew up' and that sellers changed listings to note the CC sale is the evidence.
