  1. Hm. I didn't mean to be derogatory. I just meant that it was a simpler time. It was new to the scene and so did not have something to be pretentious about. I don't disagree that there was lots of great story telling.
  2. Actually, it was the Northland and nicely wrapped. https://www.cgccomics.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=3007& Doug also had another copy in Megacon a few years ago that he wanted $175K from (which is where I remembered the number from). I think he sold it shortly afterward. This may have been around 2015 or so.
  3. This thread has officially jumped not only the shark but the killer whale.
  4. Well, that explains everything to me now. You treat your women like you do comics - as financial investments. Mine gives more than she takes. I guess you teach people how to treat you.
  5. Actually, you are again rewriting history again as we covered this. Dem heard about the buyer. I later posted that I know the buyer direcetly and corrected Dem's post because Dem got the grades wrong The buyer bought the 4.5 (which he said looked amazing for the grade) and the Qualified 5.5 I think it was (can't remember the exact grade). He did not buy the 5.0 or the 9.0. Easy. 6.5 copies were selling right in the pocket of where they should have been selling. 6.0 copies were selling in the high $30's to low $40's and 7.0 copies were selling north of $60K. The 'more than $20 grand higher than any prior sale' was 2013 sales prices. Are you using sales prices from 3 years prior to show there was some sort of a spike in 2016? Come on now.
  6. But again, you are ever so slightly changing the direction of the facts (whether unintentional or not, I don't know). It didn't raise eyebrows because it sold for $150K. It raised eyebrows because it sold months prior in another holder for half that price. It sure did. It shocked me too. I know Barton and I know Josh so I know it was a real sale. But it's important to remember that it was better looking than the Heritage 9.4 even though it was 'only' a 9.2 AND it was an exchange sale and not an auction. Those are both factors that should be weighed. Glad we finally agree. That's easy. just take a few huge arze auction prices and people will take notice. Any person who lives for capitalism will run with that for as hard and long as they can. If you're trying to predict a price spike like this that came out of nowhere, there's no way of knowing that unless you're involved in the bidding and know how high you are willing to go. If it was so easy everyone would be doing it but most people don't bid like that. As Storms said earlier, most people don't like to be market leaders. Although I did state last summer that Hulk #1 was looking very attractive and due for a spike. Sorry, can't help bragging a bit. Last time. Promise.
  7. Good point. I remembered the price but forgot the venue. Pedigree Comics said they sold a copy for $185K but I don't know if it did or if it was part trade, etc. Comiclink did sell a copy a few years ago for $125K as well.
  8. I sold a 5.5 for $30K a few months ago. This is right in the ballpark.
  9. The $150K CGC 8.5 number was just in line with where it should have been. I wouldn't consider that a strong sale either. Actually, it went a little cheap IMO because I had the opportunity to buy an 8.5 for $120K about 5 years ago. I thought the 8.5 might have fetched more. Why didn't it? Was it because it wasn't upgradeable any longer? Maybe. But as Bob said earlier, very few people want to be the big person to set a new price point.
  10. The CGC 9.4 copy that sold for 4450K on Heritage sold for exactly what Metropolis was offering to pay for CGC 9.4 copies last year. If the $450K price tag for a CGC 9.4 was such a surprise, why was Metro offering that much for a 9.4 before the copy auctioned? The CC auction wasn't just 2 mid grade sales. It was 3 sales, including a CGC 9.0 which in my professional opinion was likely upgradeable. It's possible that each of the other mid grades were also upgradeable (remember, we went into detail about this - I spoke to the buyer of the 4.5). Ghostown's copy was an anomaly (congrats to him for the sale) but it was better looking than the Heritage CGC 9.4. Even after that gigantic sale, prices still didn't spike for lower grades. As both GAtor and I (and anyone paying attention) documented, prices changed on eBay (at at shows - I was at C2E2 at the time) for all copies only after the CC auction. I think some people felt that the CC 9.0 copy legitimized the $450K 9.0 sale. I guess that depends on whether you believe the 9.0 copy was upgradeable or not.
  11. Are you saying that I need explain why the $450K price was expected for the Heritage 9.4 to make my 'opinion' valid?
  12. I'd love to know where you've disagreed with me. via PM of course so that we don't derail this thread.
  13. He isn't moving goal posts. Uh, no. If you're talking about the $450K 9.4 sale, that number was well expected by anyone who has been watching the market. It's been explained and researched in detail in this thread. It's not about popularity, it's about clarity and perspective, of which multiple opinions bring. I think most people will agree that you're just plain wrong.
  14. You're the only one who thinks this. -J. Read more Actually, Roy is correct. AF 15 prices were sort of steadily increasing until those crazy CC auctions (you know, the ones Josh hasn't reported yet) where the books sold for like 50% over current FMV. This prompted Gator to withdraw his hoard from the marketplace as no one knows/knew what the "new" FMV of the book is. If the new FMV of AF 15 in mid-low grades is $8-10K a point, then indeed those couple of CC auctions "broke out prices into the stratosphere". Does anyone other than JayDog disagree that those CC auctions precipitated this new market where AF 15 sells for $8-10K a point in grades under 6.0? Thank you.
  15. I like that videos are being abbreviated. Even pics get a pass from me as I don't always want to see vids and pics (or you can tell what it is even though it's abbreviated. But I still am not a fan of abbreviating written posts.
  16. It was too primitive to be pretentious like moderns are.
  17. I think the last 10 years have made investors look for a place to park their money, so that has created price increases in many areas but the recent trends of AF #15 pulling ahead of all other issues along with a few recent 'record' prices are the perfect storm. You have similar patterns in the sports card world. Prices are on fire in that hobby too. But ultimately, it's like the stock market. There is lots of volatility and price surging with no real fundamentals under the stocks.
  18. I'm just pointing out that this is the exact opposite of what you have been saying.
  19. IMO it's a combination of low interest rates over nearly a decade, the fact that the general public now see AF #15 as a 'great investment' and 'right place, right time' as CC auctions broke out prices into the stratosphere. What people don't factor in (and again, this is just my opinion) is that people wouldn't be buying multiple copies and storing them if it was simply for love of the character. They also still wouldn't be doing it if interest rates were at 10%. I think maybe some people 'love' the character more now that an other times.
  20. It was more or less a sensibly priced hobby in that regard (in regards to pricing differences) until recently. The current volatility is unprecedented. That in my opinion is because logic is not involved in the decision making process any longer.
  21. Most Marvel keys in this auction seemed to under perform except for AF #15. An Avengers #1 in 9.4 went cheap when previous copies were $175K+ The Avengers #4 CGC 9.8 did go for a record number. That was a crazy result. My buddy owned that and big congrats to him.
  22. Those are terrific questions. What is most clear is that logic has left the markets.
  23. Based on how hot AF #15 is and what the CC 5.0 went for it should have gone for $70,000!!1@@#@
  24. Ah, the guy was a total d-bag. I was on the road and sold a book privately. In the mean time this buyer hit my BIN. I sent him a very polite and apologetic email explaning that I was on the road and unable to update eBay in time and he left a neg. Not much i can do there.
  25. Hey guys. I genuinely don't know how to price it. As Ron says, there is very little Baker to go around but exceptional pieces have sold in the $6-7K range years ago on Heritage. And I do think this piece counts as exceptional. I have a number in my head that I want to get for it so I'm open to offers to see what the market decides. I paid $4000 for it about 5 years ago. Maybe 6 years ago now that I think about it.
