  1. It seems that you're new here, so hello, VintageComics, it's great to meet you--welcome to the boards! You may be unaware of this, but people around here have formed entrenched sects with regards to what they believe is and is not restoration. Deacidification is additive whereas pressing isn't. From that perspective, some might think of it as being more of a restorative measure than pressing is, and plenty of people define pressing as restoration. I would be more worried about whether CGC would deduct a grade point for having a chalk film than I would about it being restoration. And yes, thank you for your warm welcome to these boards. What is pressing? Also, what are these sects and should I run if I see torches approaching me quickly?
  2. What's the cost? Does it take expertise to do, or can anyone buy the spray and apply it assuming they're moderately careful? You can actually buy a can and do it yourself, apparently. (thumbs u This was at the top of google when I searched "paper deacidification spray". Read away. Would this be considered restoration? No, of course not. You're just adding what is basically chalk as a coating to preserve the paper. If people want their books to last 100's of years the first thing they should be worried about is somehow slowing down the acidification process. That is done by using the right materials, climate control, additives (like paper, backing boards and spray) or a combination of those things. Obviously not everyone is going to do it for their entire runs but if I had a really nice artifact like an Action #1 or similar, I'd probably look into the best method of preservation possible.

  4. The fact that a clear backing board won't absorb acid off-gassing from the comic is definitely a concern and a slight disadvantage of clear backing boards. However, I doubt there's any way to create a great-presenting clear backing board that could fill that role, and as you suggested, there are other ways to absorb acid released from the comic if you prefer the superior presentation of a clear board. Microchamber paper interleaved within interior pages seems like the ideal substitute if you're not going to use an inert, buffered board such as those sold by E. Gerber or Bill Cole that you have to change every decade or two. Many people have never heard of deacidification but it also is a very viable alternative. It basically consists of spraying paper with a deacidification spray which if I am not mistaken is just chalk - a very calcium rich and therefore alkaline substance. It sounds horrific but it's actually a recommended way to preserve paper when trying to prevent breakdown because of acidification of paper.
  5. I think an important thing to remember is that the breakdown in newsprint comics happens from within the newsprint. That is why no matter no matter which storage method you use, it's important to use some sort of alkalyne buffer to slow down the decomposition process. This is where good quality backing boards, deacidification treatments on the bare pages or just the interleaving pages really make a difference.
  6. Personal enjoyment is a personal experience and some people are going to enjoy seeing all the places that other members visit. Many of us can't travel as extensively and so we live vicariously through the posts of others. I'm OK with the pics of Cat, not because I'm probably the person in 1st place with most pics posted that grouchy Tim tth2 is talking about but because sometimes a picture is worth a 1000 words and because there are only so many times you can post a scan of the same book over and over. Not aimed at anyone in particular as I don't know the whole story or who's involved but having seen it many times on this forum, I also think it's a shame when the ignore function is abused and not used properly and effectively. When people really need to dig in their heels and show to others who they are ignoring it's meaningless, really. A better solution might be a private PM to solve the "problem" where an amicable solution might have a more positive effect on the open chat forum. I do agree that Cat having a dedicated thread documenting his travels might be a decent compromise for those that are interested and those that are not. (thumbs u I'd definitely check it out. Might even post a pic or two of myself in there.
  7. Robbie, killer book. Save some Bakers for me if you have any to spare!
  8. I think it generally depends on the type of scuffing and the amount. They're going to go a touch easier on what looks like production related scuffing (usually happens while the inks are still wet) than if the gloss and colour are scuffed off from poor handling.
  9. That copy is much nicer than a 1.5
  10. Yeah, those were some pretty books. There are a couple left. I had a few of them, all with nice page quality and cover quality. Enjoy, Dan! (thumbs u
  11. Can you please name the UK boardie who ripped you off and in what way you were ripped off? Funny, I've only been ripped off by an American buyer but maybe I should stop selling to all Americans and British board members. I hear they're a whole lot of trouble too.
  12. One of my favorite covers. Reminiscent to the cover of Marvel Comics #1. I agree!! There's just something about him burning through steel and turning it into some molten slag that holds the eye!!! Imagine kids of the day seeing THAT on the newsstand!!! It only cost a DIME back then!! Man, love that book. Where did you get it from? Is that possibly my old copy via 143ksk?
  13. Man, this piece would attract some attention. I loved this storyline.
  14. Yeah, I'm reticent (Ogami reference) to share what I'm looking for openly as well, simply because of what Chris said. Relatively shallow market with deep pockets and long tentacles, and all that...
  15. That's a Cookeville Pedigree copy. I don't think it's recognized by CGC, but neat nonetheless. http://www.comicpedigrees.com/pedigrees.php#COOKSVILLE (thumbs u
  16. Vern, I was holding a window open ready to bid and then got distracted. Glad it went to a good home. Let me know what you have for an undercopy. (thumbs u
  17. Like someone else emailed me this morning...the book has been improved. It's now high grade and unrestored. I just posted this thread to make sure nobody bought a fake Superman #1. Personally, I think this should be worked out between the parties involved in private and then the final results posted when the matter is settled. Otherwise it just becomes a shooting match in the wild west.
  18. I've emailed Metro (since Enrique emailed me this morning) and they are checking to see if Enrique tried to contact them in the last day or so. I'm sure they'll follow up on this with Enrique. I don't really have anything else to add.
  19. The book was offered to me and at least one other dealer (who contacted me after I started this thread).
  20. Gang, there is a Superman #1 CGC 6.0 EP that is being shopped around. The book is being offered by someone called Enrique Gomez Sanchez who apparently is an actual paying customer (from Spain) and bought and paid for the book from Metropolis but the book is obviously not right. It looks like the reseller buys actual books and then tampers with the CGC holder. I've contacted Metropolis about this as well as CGC and just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case they come across this "deal" I guess all I can add is that you should proceed with extreme caution when buying a big book from someone you've never dealt with before. His eBay ID is queenalldc He had 377 positive feedback before he made it private some time in the past week. The original book has been removed from the CGC holder and the book currently in the holder is a reprint much like this one: (The link is being provided simply to show the reprint...the eBay seller has nothing to do with the fraud). Link to Superman #1 reprint This is a scan of the legit book that I pulled from Metro's site as it was certified by CGC. These are pictures of the book that is being offered (obviously not the same book):
