    I've had a lower grade copy of this black cover issue for ages, and was finally able to get a decent one on eBay, arriving yesterday. The beater, BTW, is listed on eBay right now, if anyone is looking for a reader or filler "beat but complete" copy.

    I don't remember seeing too many on the newsstand...but this was the early '50's and I had begun to taper off my collecting. mm Sounds like you were tapering off when I was just starting, around 1952.

    Nice haul there, Shadow Images! The Crimes by Women and Dark Mysteries of course are the cream. I too have a DM 19, that I bought off The Bay about 10 or a dozen years ago, in VG condition. Think I paid about $250 for it back then.

    The '50's were indeed "Puritanical" by today's standards; it was the end of Victorianism by about 1957. But AFA comic books were concerned, there were reportedly 500 different titles of them in the early to mid fifties, coming out almost every month. And if Atlas was doing so bad, why did they have such a large proportion of them? Horror comics alone, Adventures into Weird Worlds, Adventures into Terror, Astonishing, Journey into Unknown Worlds, Journey into Mystery, Menace, Marvel Tales, Mystery Tales, Mystic, Strange Tales, Spellbound, Uncanny Tales; yeah, pre-code era, they were really hurtin', weren't they?
