  1. The book in question is not a book where pressing is needed, I don't think. Not wrinkled or creased in any way. One of the main things I was worried about is that the source of the book was known to have books that were color touched which caught a few underground collectors by surprise when they graded his books. I'm pretty sure that's not the case with this item as it is more of a newsprint type paper that it is printed on (including the cover).

  2. Long time collector, and I own many slabs, but have never sent a book to be graded until today. Only reason I am sending this one in is because I intend to sell it and was nervous about selling it raw because it should fetch close to $1,000, which for me will easily be the most expensive book I will have sold. I went through a CGC authorized dealer in my area who I trust. Only thing I heard that was something of a concern was they mentioned that if CGC for some reason does not grade the book, CGC does not refund the grading fees. Is that accurate? I don't think there is any reason they would not grade this book, but that seems a little strange that they would not refund fees if they did not slab the book.

Anyway, not sure if going through a dealer is the way most do it on their first try, but it seemed to be the easiest thing to do. Will update this thread when I receive the book back.

  3. Sad to see how many people are ignorant about Cerebus and how important the book was in it's time. It's become marginalized because of some of Dave Sim's beliefs and because it ended in 2004, but those who were actually collecting in the 80's remember it well.

I owned many copies of Hulk #181 in my years of collecting, but I always ended up selling them. I knew there would always be another opportunity to buy that book back if I wanted it. As far as Cerebus, it took me years to put together my complete set and my #1 is mid-grade at best, but I'm very proud to own it.

I'm just not sure if someone who is only used to reading new DC and Marvel books would even appreciate Cerebus if they were given a copy of the first "phone book". Since the early stuff is mainly Conan-type adventure, most of these newer fans aren't even that familiar with Conan, so it would probably not be of interest. I think I'd rather start a new reader with the "High Society" book and if they find it interesting, let them go back and read the first one to get the backstory.

Not sure how any of that should tie in to this thread, as it is about how a CGC 9.8 copy of Cerebus #1 is non-existent, but just felt the need to rebut those who are disparaging something they know nothing about.

    Thanks BrotherJ!

But I cannot access the page and its info. Is it current?

It appears to be live and not an archived site, plus there is a 2019 copyright at the bottom of the page. The store in question bought 54 VF/NM copies of the counterfeit and paid $770 for them. So about $14.25 a copy.

I have thought about myself and I really cannot see money being the primary motivation. I believe that these were sold in comic shops around the time of the publication of the original. If that's the case then I would presume the knockoffs would have priced close to cover price value ($1). You pay and get the stock and ink, make the plates and other prepress, print, staple and cut. If you printed a 1,000 copies, then you would be looking at a $1000 minus the comic shop's overhead. All that time and effort and expensive for $500/1,000 copies?

The counterfeit actually came out in 1982, five years after Cerebus #1 came out and it was already selling at collector prices. Here's an interesting story I just found out about one of the comic shops that purchased the counterfeits: https://www.rogerogreen.com/2007/05/17/cerebus-1-the-counterfeit/

    Did you go?

Yes, I did. I did ok with the cheap books. The seller with the cheap books  (Glenn and Tammi) were overrun with customers and I just could not get into the boxes. I would pull a few books, come to a spot where I could go no further, and told them I would come back later. I did that twice as it was just crazy over there. I think I missed out on quite a bit of their better books, but there was nothing else that could be done. I did mention to him about the "mothball pedigree" books, and I pulled a run of Swamp Thing that were definitely smelly.I pulled a few gems out from other cheap book dealers, but a lot of stuff was mid-grade at best.
