Some say every comic is a little piece of comic book history...but that book wow! The day the Silver Age began! The day the heroes started to make their comeback! The making of a new era! Just an amazing piece of history to own. In my mind there's Action Comics #1 (and of course Detective Comics #27 and for us Flash Fans, Flash Comics #1) and then there's Showcase #4. AC#1 the beginning of an era and then SC#4 the rebirth of a new era! Two huge marks on the industry, without these books what would we be talking about here?

Agree 100%. For the longest time it was just opt of reach for me, and when I could grab one I was usually the under bidder. I have long felt it was the foundation of the hobby as I knew it.

And for all you worry warts on the boards here who's crying over the crashing price of their AF 15's, let's hope you've got a copy of Spidey 1 because at least now we know where all of the money is going to:    :whee:  (:

I guess that QES sticker and short little video by Vinnie must have made all the difference in the world as it sold for almost $200K in Tuesday's evening's CC Event Auction for a mere GC 9.0 graded copy.  :whatthe:

Don't you absolutely hate it when some fool out there outbids you by a mere $5 for your grail of a book since I thought for sure that my last second bid of $170,550 would have won, but I guess that fool must have had a prior bid in there of $170,555 which came out to $196,138.25 with the 15% BP juice in there.

With it being CC you should have been able to bid and counter bid until one of you gives up. I am normally on the give up side.

So amazing! You are so lucky to have a SC4! Every SC4 purchase has a great story to it I am finding out, care to share yours? Love the Star Wars action figures too BTW, thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks. No big story other than it was a book I had been the bridesmaid on for about 4 years. It was the only bigger Silverage key I had never owned or owned currently but I kept missing out on them. This one was through Heritage and marked the right boxes for me. Very happy to own it.

pre 2020 values.  absolutely not.  its stabilizing now, and will eventually swing back up, especially if an xmen movie is announced, There's just way to much money invested into this book to ever get to those ones pre covid prices (for this or any of the big, big SA keys)

I agree, I was just referencing where it was right before the explosion.

    Ouch.

My last try at a 8.0 copy was in late 2019 and was around 22K in a Heritage auction.

I love the book and had planned on upgrading last year but it absolutely rode the hype train last year, even folks saying it is not going anywhere but up and once we see them join the MCU it will explode in value....

I doubt it drops to pre 2020 levels but if it does I will be upgrading.

If you wanted to limit the downside risk, I would say DC Silver age first appearances.  Marvel keys have already priced in expectations and are now pulling back a bit from that.  DC Silver Age first appearances haven't priced in a whole lot of expectations.  I think they provide upside potential with downside risk that is much more limited.  I would also put magazine first appearances in the category of limited downside risk.

Aside from a couple of Marvel Keys I needed (Hulk 1), this was my approach almost exactly last year. Grab the DC keys I had put off and work on magazine keys. Ironically I need a Vampirella 1 and each auction I bid on seems to be higher than the last.

I was happy with the Hulk price even though it was right at the beginning of the large uptick. I also sold off some Mickey Mantle cards for peak prices to finance some of this so I felt the entry price was still around what I paid for the Mantle cards (all bought during when that hobby was way down.)
