    Captain Midnight's Pre-flight Check

The fighters were parked at the far end of the field

as sirens garishly blared and he scrambled to wield

the top ranked squadron of P51's

that belched deadly fire from six synchronized guns.

As he jogged toward his splendidly fit fighter plane

thoughts of duty occurred and began to strain

his concentration for the daring plan of attack

he'd undeniably been rattled by too much heavy flack.

Had the master alternator switch been turned on?

why it would blast him out of the sky if that was set wrong.

What if the propeller pitch was set too high?

he'd often wondered about that as he streaked through the sky.

As he ran down the runway the captain absently thought

of the flowers for his girl, which he had recently bought.

Did she prefer pink roses or would red carnations be embraced?

Well at least they were fresh cut and arranged in good taste.

He thought back on his idyllic days while attending Yale

flush full of serious studies and frosty pints of ale.

He'd diligently schooled himself in law and competed in track

right up until that day of the devastating December attack.

When Captain Midnight first burst into the air

energetic legions of enemy pilots were blissfully unaware

of the nonpareil nerves that he brought to the fight

until they were illuminated in the Admiral's gun sight.

The courageous Captain then sprinted as though shot from a sling

ensuring that he would be the first to take wing

as he sought to do battle with the German air aces

who'd had no time to wipe the grit off their faces.

But wait .. what was that call that he heard

as he briskly dashed then his head briefly blurred

"Hey Captain you overran and forgot to climb in your plane"

"Well how about that, I am under incredible strain".

The moment was forgotten as he closed the planes bubble

if word of his lapse leaked, he'd be in serious trouble.

The signal flare then sizzled and burst high in the sky

and the squadron's fleet launched under the commander's watchful eye.

Fighter planes banked left and streaked straight towards the enemies lair

to paste the Luftwaffe with lead, that would pierce the night air.

On a cold and pitch dark night,

    ancient tracks shake with fright

On railroads old filled with disdain,

comes grinning bright, the old Ghost Train

Why wears its engine a skull like mask?

Some questions are better not to ask

Once every year through fog or rain

comes rumbling through, the old Ghost Train

    Spike drivers and Conductors know

in a whispered hush how the tale did grow

These rails were laid with death and pain

souls burn like coal in the old Ghost Train

A race to join coasts from West to East

was the prideful sin that made the beast

The prize - a golden spike - like the mark of Cain

scars deep the heart of the old Ghost Train

Its passengers wail and scream a lot

    forever ride this spectral chariot

that collects the dead that do refrain

to say why they ride the old Ghost Train

    Changing of the guard

So now 19 days into the apocalypse

    Unforgiving sun, cracked parched lips

Fires still burn on the mountains above

None that remained were shown God's love

Progress that took a thousand years

Quickly washed away in a sea of tears

Clearly the mighty impact of the winged ones fall

Can be seen in the burning buildings and shopping malls

The only blessing of my newly formed life

Is that my family didn't survive the New World strife

The devil has made known his calling card

All has witnessed the changing of the guard
