  1. Serra Angel was my absolute favorite card growing up. I drew that picture so many times. Played it in nearly every deck I made. I started with Revised, so not sure how long they used that image. I think I stopped playing around the Onslaught block. Thanks for sharing!
  2. I use Google Drive (spreadsheet). It's always available, laptop or phone.
  3. This morning's meeting did not hold my attention. (Credit to Jae Lee for the composition.)
  4. Out of curiosity, does the hobby favor/like one inker over another with regard to Gene Colan's Daredevil work? Just wondering given the several examples in this auction.
  5. Thought this video lecture that the NGA (here in my backyard in the DC metro area) posted today might interest some of you here. And in the spirit of elevating the collective purpose I've created this thread. I love these museum lectures, and found this one played into a conversation this board has from time to time concerning where works on paper fit into the larger Art world. The video is short at 25 minutes, but fair warning it's also pretty dry. The presenter is somewhat monotone, but she does speak about (and show works by) artists who are in the NGA's collection such as: Winsor McCay, Art Spiegelman, George Herriman, Crumb, and Rockwell. I also learned that Picasso created comic strips. And knowing is half the battle.
  6. Ah yes, thank you. Been a while since reading that material. Appreciate the correction. At any rate, would really like to see Warlock on the big screen soon. Cheers.
  7. I agree. That said, if I recall correctly Warlock was known as just "Him" (FF/Thor issues), then just "Warlock" (Marvel Premiere #1) until Starlin gave him his full name, yes?
  8. Just playing the game like most of you, but regarding Warlock and how he finds his way into this universe... Couldn't he appear in Captain Marvel? Given that he comes and goes from his cocoon, couldn't we see him with Marvel back in the 90s as a previous version of himself? Would be a lesser powerful Warlock, which could add muster to when he re-emerges from the cocoon we saw at the end of Guardians 2. More powerful after each "hibernation" (which we learn about in Captain Marvel) which means he's more on par with Thanos for the next Infinity film. Does this make any sense?
  9. Oh I agree, there are teams out there who produce fantastic pieces. And not to get all awkward between strangers online, but a fair number of people my age look at Lee and Williams with similar eyes as you do the aforementioned. My buddies and I had a richer childhood thanks to you.
  10. I wish more comic artists penciled and inked their own pages. I really never bought into multiple people having their hand on one work. I suppose it's my own personal hang up, and perhaps fine art snootiness? Getting back to the topic, I actually prefer what you're describing. It's all from you, from one hand, and at the end of the day your pencils and inks get onto one board, which is the preferred result for most of us (I'd imagine). That said, I do own some modern stuff with pencils and inks on separate sheets. I guess one has to make up their own mind when they see a page in a book that hits them in the face with the art as well as the story. I will also echo my support for transparency and disclosure of the process. It makes things less confusing. I'm 39, in case you're interested in additional context around my comment.
  11. $180 after coupon... Seems about FMV, I suppose. But it hit all the right buttons for me: new case, white pages, decent registration. Plus it matches the grade of my Thor #165. That's a new thing for me, matching grades for related books.
  12. This sort of quandary is a balancing game I've been playing internally since taking an interest in comic art. There is another page in this auction that fits into this category; significant page with regard to character and story, yet the art leaves me wanting. And then I ask myself if it's worth the 4 or 5 figures it will command...and I don't have a good answer. I lean "no" because I look at these things as objects of art foremost. I've learned there are lots of pages to be had (at various value points) of my favorite characters that are artistic treasures, but I don't want to fill portfolios of this stuff. I'm looking to invest/procure representative images that meld fine art qualities with historical significance for the characters I've identified. And lets throw in a bit of nostalgia on a few of those pieces. How long that takes, and how it coordinates with the many other hobbies I enjoy and spend money on is anyone's guess. Hope that makes sense, you raise an interesting question.
  13. Fell victim to the hype after seeing the movie and pre-ordered my first statue from Sideshow's website. I've always been a fan of their stuff, just don't generally need statues that large. So, nice to see some smaller (and less expensive) items listed lately.
  14. Spent some time actively trying to learn about the hobby before making my first purchase last July. I've purchased two other pieces since then, but not sure I want to continue. I think I might buy 1-2 higher end pieces and call it good. Seems that would produce a better outcome than buying lots of random pages, at least for me. The problem is what are those 1-2 pieces; how do I narrow down the field? And can I stop at 1-2? Hmm... EDIT: Looks like I'm the sole under one year guy. Look at me go.
  15. Curious if you could provide an example or two? I suppose it’s contingent upon what one likes/collects, but anything I was tracking (more for edification than anything) seemed to finish higher than previous comps. No biggie if you don’t want to share, I’m just curious about other perspectives.
  16. Yeah the old guard around here certainly has spoken. I guess all this "new money/new blood" that needs to come into the hobby has questionable taste, eh? I mean, we even adore Ron Lim's Surfer (gasp)! It's dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria! Here are my faves in no particular order other than numerical: 608 (you know which one) 609 612 616 617
  17. Bought some toys recently. Fun ensued. I'm way late to the Black Series stuff, but I really enjoy it. Quality.
  18. I don't collect on a weekly basis anymore, so whenever I hear an arc, or new book is worthwhile I generally wait for the collected trade to come to market. And so it was with Superman Rebirth from Tomasi/Gleason. I fairly recently purchased the deluxe edition collecting the first 13 issues and felt reconnected with Big Blue. There are several reasons for this, chiefly being that I have been disappointed with Superman's portrayal in the new movies. It's not the Superman I recognize, to a large extent, and Rebirth really brought something back into the world that I think we all need right now. And second is that the Rebirth storyline (Superman as a family man) spoke to me in an unexpected way as my wife and I are expecting the birth of our second child (a boy) this March. So, I'll finally have a perfect reason to post Jor-El's quote (the son becomes the father...) all over the place. I know the page is a bit cliche, but it'll be nice to have it as a daily reminder in my bedroom that Superman is, indeed, here to stay. Mick Gray inked, and sold me the page. He was great to deal with, as several of you relayed to me. Cheers.
  19. Same here. I'm new-ish to OA, bought three pieces last year. Two of which from stories I have not read, nor likely ever will. I've also made offers on pieces from books I've never read. The third one I purchased because I bought a trade (Superman Rebirth #1-#13) and the writing really struck a chord with me. Great version of Superman. And with the birth of my own son coming in March I found the storyline personally poignant.
  20. This is an interesting take. You may have seen a recent post of mine where I offered the owner (if they happened to be on the board) of one of those Thanos pages double what they paid. Felix helped extend the offer, graciously. It didn't work out with the current owner. No biggie, it happens. Everyone's motivations are going to differ some, of course, when they purchase art. I haven't read the Thanos book, and frankly didn't know it existed until Felix's first email notice about the art drop. I just loved the art and loved the characters on the page, the composition, etc. When it comes to art, more specifically comic art, I have a difficult time shoehorning pieces into what I think they should sell for. In my example, say the owner of that page had gone through with the deal, which he was close to doing. That would have been a modern piece paid double for, with zero nostalgia, nor any real thought for investment on my end (the offer was less than $1,000). It's just money paid for a skill, an expression, an art that in my view was worth the offer. And I likely would have paid more, I loved it that much. I don't know. Writing these posts are sometimes more therapy, self-help, to try to understand this market/niche/world than anything else. There are lots of examples for just about any scenario in the art world to justify any number of thought processes.
