  1. I'm a sucker for this cover. Probably because I have a nice shadow comics 4 that swipes it. I drooled over detective35's copy.
  2. It's not a bad strategy if your a speculator comfortable with huge risk. A book of this magnitude does not fly under anyone's radar. A much less risky strategy is to find lesser books that are flying under the radar and you can purchase at a discount to gpa. Don't forget when it's your turn to sell it's also your turn to pay a commission.
  3. That and the fact that it was pre mass pressing so buyers believe the old labeled books are likely to upgrade after "work".
  4. As far as I'm concerned you have done all that is to be expected of you. The onus is 100 percent on the seller to resolve. This exact scenario happened to me years ago as a seller on ebay and through the good graces of my buyers the books were in the correct hands within 10 days of the auctions end. It ain't rocket science but it does require effort to resolve.
  5. Didn't know you could back out of a Heritage auction. Even if they are "play bidding", as you call it, those that bid are prepared to make good should they win. Those that don't make good are a different kettle of fish altogether. Personally, I often throw in low ball bids on auctions. Lately I haven't won many.
  6. Dug up this black beauty in honor of seeing Steranko at the Carbo con.
  7. Besides the occasional Nor'easter the best thing about Connecticut are all the old basements with comic collections waiting to be found. Hotbed for golden aged artist's. Hell I met Earl Norem in a swimming pool.
  8. Love the thread. For me there is something about preliminary illustrations for later finished work that always caught my eye. I've been collecting Krenkel for years now so I'll share a 6"x6" doodle recently picked up. The caption under his initials reads "idea for a Conan illo".
  9. Was always impressed with their customer service as a buyer of their slabbed books years ago. Then they began selling many raw auctions and their grading seems spotty. They still seem to get above market prices but also be aware that, if things haven't changed, they do in-house pressing.
  10. Sweet magazine. Conan has some serious hair.
  11. This thread has serious problems. The book easily sells for over $500 on ebay from a US seller assuming the rest is as nice as the front. ( u me).
  12. Hmmm. Never thought of that. Plus the fold-in's didn't have that many folds. Any Gaines pedigree collectors out there have info concerning the storage conditions? Making the pressing decision easier.
  13. Here's a question for Mad Magazine Collectors. I own a Mad 139 CGC 7.5 Gaines Copy that I bought on a whim for the princely sum of $24 in a Heritage auction in 2004. Well the book is perfect but for the back fold-in was folded. The fold's are all non color breaking and, I think, could easily be pressed out leaving a 9.6/9.8. Does anyone think that pressing is a good idea or does the fact that Gaines himself may very well have done the fold in hold any collecting value? Not an expensive book but a really iconic cover IMHO. Fold in was pictured from a raw copy.
  14. So true. A little more devastating than let's say Chuck's 30,000 square feet fully engulfed!
  15. Bought this Norem Savage Sword 46 preliminary at a recent Heritage auction. Love it.
