Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  2. I am an old guy and before eBay and the internet, surprises is all there was, LCS's, local shows, those key, highly sought after books (not necessarily due to $ value) or those I need a copy to fill a hole books were always a surprise when you made your trip to the LCS. Between 1989 and 2002 I used to travel to the 5-6 LCS's in my area once a month to see what "new treasures" may have arrived. The internet played a big role in folks no longer participating in the "Thrill Of The Hunt" although some still do and some find still find those surprises.
  3. That is too dark to be a dust/sun shadow, even the staples are colored black, it does appear to be some sort of paint. This is what the book looks like without it.
  4. Welcome To The Boards!!! I do not have my books graded or cleaned and pressed, however, we can still get you headed in the right direction. Things to consider are, are you going to have it graded for resale or for your own personal collection? This book is also a "Newsstand Edition" which some collectors prefer over the "Direct Edition". (UPC Code vs. Spidey's Head) Defects - Blunted corners, top edge wear with some denting and color loss, minor spine stress with a couple of small/color breaking spine ticks, cover appears to be wavy with some color loss/rub, slight spine roll, color loss/rub at top of rear cover, IMO, as the book sits right now...VF- 7.5 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 7.5 VERY FINE- (VF-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. According to eBay sold auction prices for this book in in the VF 8.0 range there is not much difference between a raw and graded book, raw in the VF 8.0 range is selling for $100.00 - $125.00, graded books in the VF 8.0 range are selling for $125.00 - $175.00. Yes, folks are asking for higher prices for graded books in the VF range listed as "Buy It Now"($200.00 +) but that is not what they are actually selling for at auction. Also, other things to consider, CGC slabs do not offer any more protection than a Mylite and Acid Free Board, CGC slabs are not airtight, nor are they UV protected and need to be stored in the same environmental conditions as raw books, the differences would be...Pro's - An official grade, Con's - not being able to ever read the book. If you are looking to protect and/or display the book, low cost UV protected frames are available.

  6. 1965 - 1969 - Local pharmacy, supermarket, 7-11 1979-1981 - Local magazine dealer, mail order (which took 5 weeks from a place I could have driven to in < 2 hours) 1981 - A landmark year, I found my 1st LCS (how?) 1981 - 2002 - LCS's, shows, cons (The thrill, I mean anxiety, of the hunt) 2003 - I was introduced to eBay. 2003 - 2010 - eBay, shows/cons, LCS 2010 was the last year for purchasing anything new for the collection, the LCS's did not have any of the books I was looking for, con's (Wizard World Philly) became more about "Pop Culture" than comic books and the prices for the books I was looking for (early JIM/ST issues in the 1-40 range) became too expensive for me. 2019 - 2023 - Bought a few issues to frame and display, nothing of high $ value, just liked the covers.

  10. That is a common occurrence on "Cardstock" covers, it is usually associated with the printing/bindery process.

  12. Cover price actually means nothing as far as value, when there are thousands of these books out there due to large print runs (80's/90's) and dealers have a ton of these books that nobody wants... I do all of my selling on Facebook, not on Facebook Marketplace (although I did sell my Grandsons cards on Marketplace and the buyer picked them up and paid cash), but in Comic Book Groups, I belong to 6 groups, (tons of knowledgeable folks and fun talking comics, some comic book creators belong to some of these groups) only two of the six I belong to allow sales.(There are probably a lot more out there) I do not advertise the books which would bring in more folks and increase sales, I wait until I see someone looking for what I have and then message them. (I do all of the legwork for my Son, grading, photographing, securely packaging to ship, drive to the post office and, I do not see a dime) In the groups that allow sales (just run a search on Facebook) you can sell directly with BIN, have claim sales, auctions, etc. Join a group or two, read their rules and follow them, get to know the folks and sell away, no fee's, the only problem you run into these days is with the Governments $600.00 max sales before being taxed, most groups suggest PayPal G&S only, however, PayPal asks for a tax ID number and if you do not have one they will withhold 24% of everything above $600.00, I do not know if that is only when you send an "Official Invoice" through PayPal or for all moneys sent to you through G&S. I have only ever sent one official invoice and received the notice, also, the cost of shipping has gone nuts. My advice/suggestion would be to first determine what you have in the collection that would be enticing to buyers, once you know what key books you have it will be much easier to determine how/where to sell and how much to ask, don't forget, you can also sell in this group, to find FMV on a book, use "eBay Sold Auctions" for books in the same grade. (learning how to grade is a key element to selling) Some of the key Marvel books from the 80's that I know of would be... ASM 210, 238, 252, 298, 299, 300, Annual 16, Avengers Annual 10, Daredevil 168, IH 271, Super Hero's Secret Wars Vol. 1, Issues 1, 8 (easier to sell the complete run if you have it, two years ago the run was selling for $150.00), Moon Knight 1, Wolverine Mini-Series 1 (4 issues), She Hulk 1, Spectacular Spider-Man 64, Transformers 1, Uncanny X-Men 129, 130 (almost all Uncanny X-Men from issues 94-140 are sought after) From the 1990's...ASM 361, 430, 431, Silver Surfer Vol 3 issue 44, Transformers 80 (issues 70-80 were low print runs and hard to find), Uncanny X-Men 266, X-Men 4

  15. Books are graded on their entirety, not just by a major defect, factor in the grade without the centerfold being completely detached as shown, then determine how big of a hit the book will take with the defect. Just a quick look tells me the book is in the FN+ 6.5 - FN/VF 7.0 range, take into consideration the detached centerfold, will the grade drop to...VG+ 4.5, VG/FN 5.0, FN- 5.5? 16. Welcome To The Boards!!! My Son is selling his 2000 book collection which is mainly 80's/90's, I sent out messages through Facebook to all of the local dealers, only two replied, one not needing anything on the list and the other dealer was interested and came out to look and offered a measly $800.00 claiming although there were some key books, most were dollar bin books that he could only pay 2 cents a piece for. MCS (My Comic Shop) told me I had to check their want list to see if they wanted any of those books and it showed how much they would pay, which was pennies. I have been selling these books for him for 2 years now and have sold about 250 books for $3000.00, still have 1700 books left. If you can provide us with a generalized list of what you have we can let you know what keys, if any, you have. Something along this format, this is the current generalized list for my Son's books.
  17. I have larger completed runs of ASM (2-200), Avengers (2-130), Daredevil (1-132), Fantastic Four (2-200), IH (2-6, 102-200), JIM (34-125), Sad Sack Comics (1-124), ST (43-134),TOS (1-38, 40-99), TTA (1-101), Thor (126 - 260), Two Gun Kid (1-60) X-Men (2-66). The journey started in 1979 and was completed as the collection is now in about 2009.(prices got too high for the books I needed/wanted) I have no intention of selling, I collect for the nostalgia from my youth in the 60's, even though I prefer Early Silver Age (Pre 1966, more simplistic art and stories, no blood and gore or serious drama). I am also a completest and that is why I have 2000 books and completed runs. Everyone has different reasons why they collect what they do and how they do it, the question then becomes...Are you interested in collecting because you enjoy the characters/stories/art and want the entire story of the character(s) from start to finish or are you obtaining books to read once and sell, only you can decide how you will collect. "Comic book collecting is a hobby that treats comic books and related items as collectibles or artwork to be sought after and preserved, Comics are collected for several possible reasons, including appreciation, nostalgia, financial profit, and completion of the collection."

  20. It is hard to see any defects, especially smaller ones through the case. Anybody answering your question would only be speculating on the cause/condition since it was 17 years ago. If you are looking to sell this book without issue, submit it and have it regraded or sell it as is through consignment on MCS.
  21. SCUFF - Light paper ABRASION. ABRASION - An area of a cover or spine has been roughened by rubbing against a rough surface. See also, PAPER ABRASION PAPER ABRASION - Rough area on a comic cover where color has been scratched away through contact with a rough surface, revealing the paper beneath the ink. SCUFFING: A light paper abrasion that may or may not break color, but interrupts the surface gloss of the book. Its effect on grading is determined by severity.
  22. Top right corner folded and creased, lower right corner has color breaking creases, some denting along top and bottom corners/edges, color breaking scratches/tears along the edges, minor spine stress with color breaking spine ticks and staple tears, minor spine roll, minor to moderate foxing on rear cover. Minor to moderate staple tears and moderate stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. 2.5 GOOD+ (GD+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 2.0 GOOD (GD): Back to Top Shows substantial wear; often considered a "reading copy." Cover shows significant wear and may even be detached. Cover reflectivity is low and in some cases completely absent. Book-length creases and dimples may be present. Rounded corners are more common. Moderate soiling, staining, discoloration and foxing may be present. The largest piece allowed missing from the front or back cover is usually a 1/2" triangle or a 1/4" square, although some Silver Age books such as 1960s Marvels have had the price corner box clipped from the top left front cover and may be considered Good if they would otherwise have graded higher. Tape and other forms of amateur repair are common in Silver Age and older books. Spine roll is likely. May have up to a 2" spine split. Staples may be degraded, replaced or missing. Moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached. Moderate interior tears may be present.
  24. From everything I have read, Millennials are still buying/reading comic books, even though Boomers, like myself, are slowly fading into the sunset, Gen X is just hitting their prime, kids are growing up and moving out, due to this they will have additional, disposable income, does that translate to buying comics as they did as a kid? And if so, new or back issues? I have a 25 year old Grandson, a 20 year old Grandson and three 14 year old Grandson's, none are interested in comic books, it is either playing sports, watching sports or video games and of course, do not forget...Girls.
