  1. I am by no means trying to tell you what or how to collect, I was merely responding with my opinion on why comic books stress you out, I found that to be a bit sad since comic books are supposed to fun, if I offended you in anyway I apologize.
  2. Walking into my bedroom and seeing everything on display and the memories that go along with that, comic books allow me to keep reliving the good parts of my childhood. Also...I LOVE the smell of degrading paper, we had an LCS that smelled like that, as soon as you opened the door the smell walloped you in the face.
  3. Apparently you are a bit older than me, I love hearing those old time memories from collectors.
  4. Just my opinion... If you do not want to be stressed you should adopt a 1960's/1970's attitude towards collecting, that is, that they are comic books, meant to be opened, read, handled and enjoyed. Todays mentality is high grade only, perfect (NM+ 9.6/NM/MT 9.8), encapsulated books, how much are they worth and "OH NO!!!, a can barely see it defect", will I still get a 9.6? I can imagine the stress of buying new books and having to find the "perfect copy" and keep it that way, sending it for grading and hoping nothing happens to it along the way. I imagine that the era you grew up in has a lot to do with your mentality towards collecting, here's hoping you can find more joy in collecting and a lot less stress.
  5. I assume this book received a Blue label? If you are referring to the piece missing on the outer edge then Yes, IMO, that should prevent the book from being a NM+ 9.6. The question then becomes was that piece missing when the book was graded or did it happen after encapsulation? IMO, a book that may otherwise be a NM+ 9.6 with an 1/8" piece missing is not going to be graded any higher than a VF/NM 9.0. GD 2.0 - The largest piece allowed missing from the front or back cover is usually a 1/2" triangle or a 1/4" square, although some Silver Age books such as 1960s Marvels have had the price corner box clipped from the top left front cover and may be considered Good if they would otherwise have graded higher. GD/VG 3.0 - A triangle from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable. VG 4.0 - As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. VG/FN 5.0 and up - There is no mention of missing pieces.
  6. Isn't CIS international? https://collectinsure.com/?gclid=CJu3heLP8cUCFYuPHwod4kgAww
  7. The 1st Marvel comic I bought new would be ASM 21. Unfortunately I no longer have the original bought in 65, we had to move in 69 and I had to leave all of my books behind.
  8. I see small bindery tears and slightly blunted corners, minor to moderate color rub on front cover and moderate to severe scuffing/color rub on the rear cover. I have no idea how CGC views this, IMO, the book without the scuffing would be in the NM- 9.2 range, with the scuffing, no better than... 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to TopAn excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  9. I see some slight color rub, other than that I do not see any other defects other than the fold. Assuming pressing the book removes the fold I see the book being in the NM 9.4 range, with the fold VF/NM 9.0.
  10. I agree with the above statement, we need to see the book in it's entirety, clear pics of the front and back covers (inside and outside), centerfold and pics of the defect in relation to the rest of the book. https://boards.cgccomics.com/forum/42-hey-buddy-can-you-spare-a-grade/ Also, even if that were a Bindery tear, you would not get a NM 9.4 according to the grading standards, at what point does it change from a possible Bindery Defect to an Actual Corner Piece(s) Missing. NM+ 9.6 - No bindery tears are allowed. NM 9.4 - Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books. NM- 9.2/VF/NM 9.0 - A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. VF 8.0 - A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. FN/VF 7.0 - A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. VG 4.0 - As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable.
  11. As already explained by other boardie's, the book with the missing MVS would get a "Green" label unless it is already a low grade book, someone correct me if I am wrong, books VG 4.0 and lower do not get Green labels. The book with the stamps would get a "Blue" label unless there is another hidden issue with the book.
  12. Every 6 month's I check FMV on my top 100 books using eBay sold auctions for the same book in the same grade, my F.F. 3 is a raw FR 1.0 and the value in June of 2022 was $700.00, in December the value dropped to $450.00, your book being a Remainder Copy would be graded at PR 0.5 so the FMV (depending on demand at the time) would be slightly lower than that, is your LCS severely overcharging for an extremely low grade book...??? Yes, a graded remainder copy may bring more than a raw copy so it all depends on your plans/preferences, are looking to keep/read the book or are you looking to sell...? Being graded and slabbed does not provide any more protection than a Mylite and Acid Free Board, both need to be stored in the same conditions to properly preserve the book(s). Recently an F.F. 3 in PR 0.5 with a severely faded/scuffed cover sold for $300.00 and a CGC graded GD 2.0 sold for $380.00, you be the judge. Your coverless F.F.16 would get a "NG" from CGC, a raw GD- 1.8 recently sold for $100.00, a coverless copy would probably be worth less than half of that.
  13. Welcome To The Boards and the Hobby!!! A date stamp or store stamps affect on the grade depends on the overall condition of the book, on higher grade books where the stamp is located and its size. If you would like to get an estimated grade on your book, go here... https://boards.cgccomics.com/forum/42-hey-buddy-can-you-spare-a-grade/ Post clear pics of the outside/inside of the front and rear covers, centerfold and show the missing MVS. VG 4.0 - . Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. VG/FN 5.0 - VF 8.0 - Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. VF/NM 9.0 - Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. NM- 9.2 - NM/MT 9.8 - Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location.
  14. Most people's homes are in that area winter and summer, you want the temp and humidity to be as stable as possible, the more the book has to expand/contract/adapt to changes in temp and humidity the faster it will degrade. If you store your books at home, which is a controlled environment, away from all UV light, away from sources of heat/coldness and moisture, and the books are bagged/boarded/boxed properly the books should outlive you. (Mylites are highly recommended) DO NOT store comics in an unfinished basement, unfinished garage or attic as this will cause rapid deterioration of your books. https://www.ala.org/alcts/sites/ala.org.alcts/files/content/_MeltzerBkmk16.pdf https://www.preservationequipment.com/Blog/Blog-Posts/How-to-store-comic-books-complete-guide https://www.loc.gov/preservation/care/comics.html

  16. Very light color breaking crease on the outer edge about 1" below the CCA label, color breaking corner crease at lower right corner, slight fading across top edge, slight color rub, cover does not completely cover interior pages at bottom right (FT Cover), bottom left (R Cover), minor foxing on rear cover. According to the grading standards you are not allowed any color breaking creases in any grade above FN/VF 7.0, however considering that a book is graded on it's entirety, I feel you could still get a NM- 9.2. 9.2 NEAR MINT- (NM-): Back to TopNearly perfect with only a minor additional defect or defects that keep it from Near Mint. A limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with only the slightest dimming of reflectivity. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16-1/8" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed. 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases.

  18. Color breaking corner creases, blunted corners, minor to moderate spine stress with vertical color breaking creases, slight staple tears, off center top staple, slight spine roll, minor foxing on rear cover. The book is not that bad and does not have any major defects, however the color breaking creases...IMO... FN+ 6.5 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 6.5 FINE+ (FN+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  19. Impacted/dented lower right corner/edge, rusty staples, discolored rear cover. I do however have a question, is this a spine split?
  20. The only problem I see with this book is the bindery tears and two color breaking spine ticks at the lower right of the rear cover, some minor denting of the rear cover by the spine. From what I understand, CGC is lenient on spine ticks, IMO... NM- 9.2 - NM 9.4 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed. Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/4" have been noted. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples are generally centered; may have slight discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed. 9.2 NEAR MINT- (NM-): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only a minor additional defect or defects that keep it from Near Mint.
  21. What is the book? What is the "Qualified Grade"?. Are the detached pages the only reason for the Qualified Grade? https://boards.cgccomics.com/topic/479361-can-a-detached-cover-ever-get-reattached-without-a-plod/ https://www.cgccomics.com/resources/restoration/ https://www.cgccomics.com/about/help-center-faqs/ccs-pressing/about-restoration-and-conservation/ Conserved Label (Blue/Grey) This label is applied to any comic book with specific repairs done to improve the structural integrity and long-term preservation. These repairs include tear seals support, staple replacement, piece reattachment and certain kinds of cleaning. 22. Bindery Teara small horizontal rip found on the spine in a book’s cover that can usually be seen from the front to the back. if a bindery tear is shorter than 1/4″, then these can be graded like a spine stress. https://boards.cgccomics.com/topic/483734-bindery-tears/ https://boards.cgccomics.com/topic/392644-bindery-tears-as-production-related-flaws/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaeN6n4gXJY https://boards.cgccomics.com/topic/456281-corner-dent-pressable/
