  1. Always completely remove any tape before removing/inserting a book from its bag, I also started using these to keep the flaps closed. https://www.amazon.com/Stickers-Colored-Toddlers-Student-Classroom/dp/B09TSR8K4L/ref=asc_df_B09TSR8K4L/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=563715236875&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7028903887295611626&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=200511&hvtargid=pla-1651465781246&th=1 As far as a grade... Slight color loss from tape pull, slight edge wear with a color breaking crease at the lower edge, slightly blunted corners, minor spine stress with a couple of color breaking spine ticks/small tears, slightly discolored staples, slight spine roll, minor foxing on both front and rear covers. IMO... FN+ 6.5 (FN/VF 7.0?) 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 6.5 FINE+ (FN+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  2. Edge wear w/color breaks on top edge, color breaking creases along the outer edge, blunted/rounded corners w/color breaking creases at the lower right corner, moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks and some color breaking vertical creases, moderate staple tears, small creases and color rub throughout cover, spine roll w/fanned pages, numerous creases/small tears/wrinkling on rear cover, long tear (2"-3") on rear cover, moderate foxing/staining on rear cover. IMO... 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to TopThe average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  3. Assuming there are no pages missing, coupons cut out, etc., I do not even need to list the defects on this book, it is a classic example of a... 2.0 GOOD (GD): Back to TopShows substantial wear; often considered a "reading copy." Cover shows significant wear and may even be detached. Cover reflectivity is low and in some cases completely absent. Book-length creases and dimples may be present. Rounded corners are more common. Moderate soiling, staining, discoloration and foxing may be present. The largest piece allowed missing from the front or back cover is usually a 1/2" triangle or a 1/4" square, although some Silver Age books such as 1960s Marvels have had the price corner box clipped from the top left front cover and may be considered Good if they would otherwise have graded higher. Tape and other forms of amateur repair are common in Silver Age and older books. Spine roll is likely. May have up to a 2" spine split. Staples may be degraded, replaced or missing. Moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached. Moderate interior tears may be present.
  4. Blunted rounded corners, especially top right, edge wear w/slight color rub, color breaking creases on outer edge, moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks, discolored staples, slight spine roll w/fanned pages, rear cover upper edge has wrinkling/dents/creases, slight foxing on rear cover. IMO, the color breaking creases along the outer edge prevents this book from being a higher grade. FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. 5.5 FINE- (FN-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  5. I would definitely get the book graded, right now on eBay there are individual pages from Captain America 1 (1941) selling for... CGC Graded Page 6 - BIN $2999.00 CGC Graded Page 13 - BIN $4998.00 Weather you send the book to have it graded or are just putting it in a Mylite with Acid Free Backing Board, be extremely careful handling this book, especially if it has brittle pages. If you are not getting it graded you can also purchase a Facsimile Cover to help protect the book. Be sure to keep the book away from UV light, heat sources, moisture/water and in a controlled environment to prevent the book from getting worse.
  6. Moderate edge wear w/moderate color breaking creases, blunted corners w/color breaking creases, moderate staining in the price box, moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks/creasing/small tears, color breaking creases throughout cover, moderate spine roll w/fanned pages, top edge of rear cover has moderate small tears/denting, moderate creasing/wrinkling of rear cover, moderate foxing/staining on rear cover. What I cannot see is if there are any spine splits, staple condition and if the cover and centerfold are securely attached or loose/detached at one or both staples. As the book sits right now, IMO... 4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. 7. I cannot answer your questions on a clean and press since I do not use this service. Edge wear w/color rub, 2 small color breaking creases at the top right edge, blunted corners w/small color breaking creases, moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks/creasing, minor staple tears, discolored staples, crease/scratch(?) by the Chameleon at lower right, moderate-severe creasing/wrinkling of rear cover, moderate denting/small tears of top edge on rear cover, moderate foxing/staining on rear cover. What I cannot see is if the cover and centerfold are secure or if they may be loose/detached at one or both staples. As the book sits right now, IMO... 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to TopAn above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. 8. The book that changed my life at the age of 10, seeing this cover made me say... and made me stop reading Archie, Harvey, etc., and turned me into the "marvelmaniac" I am today.
  9. Edge/Corner wear w/color rub and color breaking creases, moderate spine stress/tears and staple tears, discolored staples, slight foxing on rear cover. I wanted to give this book a VG/FN 5.0, just not sure about the "bug chew/tears" on the spine so and when I am on the fence about a grade, I always go lower. IMO - VG+ 4.5 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. 10. Obviously a book is graded on its entirety, with all defects taken into consideration to determine a final grade, as far as a "loose/detached centerfold", a completely detached centerfold is only allowed in grades GD 2.0 or lower (possibly a GD+ 2.5) any higher grade book will take a hit for a completely detached centerfold, how much of a hit, depends on the overall condition of the book. IMO, a VF/NM 9.0 will take a bigger hit than a VG/FN 5.0, however, there is nothing in the grading standards that is black and white on how much of a hit a higher grade book takes for 1 defect that is not allowed in the grade, there are however, lots of grey areas in grading and much is left to the opinion of the grader at the time the book is being graded. FN/VF 7.0 - VF 8.0 - Centerfold is mostly secure. FN 6.0 - Centerfold may be loose. VG/FN 5.0 - Centerfold may be loose. VG 4.0 - Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. GD/VG 3.0 - Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. GD 2.0 - Centerfold may be loose or detached. FR/GD 1.5 - Centerfold may be loose or detached.
  11. Blunted corners w/small color breaking creases, 1-2 spine ticks that barely break color, slightly discolored staples, slight foxing on rear cover, moderate water staining at top outer corner/edge. I am not sure how CGC will view this book, according to the "grading standards" color breaking creases are not allowed in any grade from VF 8.0 and up. VF/NM 9.0 - "An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases." VF 8.0 - "An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken." IMO, this book will be in the FN/VF 7.0 range. 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. 12. Edge wear w/ small creasing and some color rub, blunted/dented corners with color breaks, minor to moderate spine stress with color breaking spine ticks, moderate spine roll w/fanned pages, slightly discolored staples, minor to moderate foxing on rear cover. IMO... 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. 13. That is a "remainder copy" and AFAIK will receive a Blue Label with a grade of PR 0.5. Remainders - Comic books that "remain" unsold at the newsstand. In the past the top 1/4 to 1/3 of the cover (or in some cases the entire cover) was removed and returned to the publisher for credit. This practice is the reason many comics from 1936-1965 are sometimes found as coverless copies or 3/4 cover copies. Reminder copies are books that retailers/newsstand owners removed the top 1/4 or 1/3 of the cover and sent that back to the distributor for credit for unsold books. From what I understand the retailer was supposed to dispose of the remaining comic book. I think this practice stopped when direct sales became a thing. I have 10 remainder copies in my 2000 book collection, they are a way to get expensive books at a much lower price. The value will be determined by what book/issue it is and demand for said issue, I paid $45.00 for a remaindered X-Men 2 (1963) 15+ years ago and FMV is currently $200.00. (As per eBay sold auction prices in December 2022)
  14. That appears to have happened due to spine roll. SPINE ROLL. A defect of a comic book caused by improper storage that results in uneven pages and the bowing of the spine. SPINE ROLL A condition where the left edge of the comic book curves toward the front or back, caused by folding back each page as the comic was read.

  16. All I see is the bottom staple does not appear to be centered in your first pic, the second pic seems to show a discolored staple??? IMO, the book is a...(I will not grade higher than a NM 9.4 without having the book in front of me) 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM): Back to TopNearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed. Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/4" have been noted. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples are generally centered; may have slight discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed.
  17. This only pertains to a loose/detached cover or centerfold in each grade designation. VG/FN 5.0 - Centerfold may be loose. VG 4.0 - Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. GD/VG 3.0 - Cover shows significant wear, and may be loose or even detached at one staple. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. GD 2.0 - Cover shows significant wear and may even be detached. Centerfold may be loose or detached. FR/GD1.5 - Cover shows considerable wear and may be detached. Centerfold may be loose or detached. FR 1.0 - Cover may be detached. The centerfold may be missing if readability is generally preserved.
  18. Are you buying to resell and make a profit or are you a collector and want to read the story? I have 10 Remainder Copies in my 2000 book collection, it all depends on the book in question as to weather it has any $ value. I bought them because I am a collector first and needed/wanted to complete runs on a budget, remainder copies are a less expensive alternative on more expensive books, same book, same story just missing the top 1/4 of the cover. I purchased a Remainder copy of X-Men 2 about 15 years ago for $45.00, current FMV is $200.00. IMO, the price of $125.00 for both seems to be inline with current FMV. https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?tid=22601073&pgi=51
  19. NM+ 9.6 - Only subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed. No bindery tears are allowed NM 9.4 - Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed. Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/4" have been noted. VF 8.0 - NM- 9.2 - A limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. There is no specific mention of Bindery Tears below a NM 9.4.
  20. IMO, No. I check FMV on my top 100 books twice a year (June/December) and have been since 2015. (So my kids know what they have when I am no longer here.) JIM Annual 1 did not even make the list of my top 100 books until 2021 where the FMV was $350.00 for my Raw FN 6.0 copy, in 2022 the FMV was $400.00 in June and $300 in December, considering how it jumped so much in value from 2020 to 2021/2022, it would probably not have even made my list except for the MCU, the question then becomes did it increase in value because of speculation of a new movie and will it maintain that value if the movie flops? The majority of my top 100 books dropped in value by about 25% from June 2022 to December 2022, IMO the market is correcting itself, my top 50 decreased in value from $42,000.00 to $36,000.00 from June 2022 to December 2022.
  21. Obviously my 67 year old eyes are not seeing what the rest of the group is seeing.
  22. I did not look at your "hidden contents". All I see is some slight color rub and very slight corner wear, without having the book in front of me I would say you are in the NM- 9.2- NM 9.4 range. 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. 9.2 NEAR MINT- (NM-): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only a minor additional defect or defects that keep it from Near Mint. A limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with only the slightest dimming of reflectivity. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16-1/8" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed.
