  1. They do not want to be bothered with packing/shipping etc so it will be Facebook,Yard Sale, etc. I know "Yard Sale" sounds bad but I used to do model railroading and I stopped I gave them all of my HO equipment including Locomotives that did not run and they sold all of them at a price they were happy with at a town wide yard sale, so... I already appraised his top 35 using eBay sold auction listings and the dealer that came out agreed with about 98% on my grades and FMV, he said some where slightly higher, some where slightly lower. He pointed out several books that he would be able to sell immediately either because of being "hot" now or because you just do not see them, they do not show up often (JIM Annual 1, ASM Annual 1) He also told me he gets $150.00 for the complete run (1-12) of Marvel Super Hero Secret Wars (1984), he says they come in for #1 and #8 and leave with the complete run. If he can sell the 35 key's/hot books (that we know of right now) for FMV he will have sold them for $1900.00 and still have the junk left, that is $1100.00 more than he was offered for the whole collection.
  2. Unfortunately although I am an avid collector of Marvel Pre-Hero Gold, Silver and Early Bronze I do not follow the movies and I am not real familiar with most books from the 80's/90's. (I am familiar with some because I was buying them new when I got back into collecting in 79.) Since I do not follow the movies I have no idea what is coming out, what characters are being portrayed or what storyline they are following. The only reason for the question is that my Son is selling his collection and he only received one offer from a dealer. Even though there are key/hot books that I knew of in the collection the dealer that came out to look pointed out a couple more so I am trying to find out what else may be in there of any value that we are not aware of.
  3. Also my Son said... If the hot/key books are going to sell that quickly why should we take 30% of FMV when we can sell them ourselves and take all of the profit. AFAIK he plans on listing a couple of books on Facebook to see what happens.
  4. It is not up to me. He was explaining to me what happens when he adds a new collection and I told him that although I was with him the entire time and a lot of these books were bought by me brand new that they were no longer mine so he needed to explain everything to my Son and his wife since they will be making the final decision. After explaining all of this to them he also said "if you are having doubts or do not feel right about the offer let me know right now, it will not hurt my feelings", my Son and his wife decided to wait for his final offer and I told him since my Son has the final say he should contact him through Facebook rather than contacting me. I told my Son that I contacted 9 local dealers through Facebook and only received 3 replies... 1)Thanks for reaching out, here are some gems in there but the majority are books we are not currently interested in, Good Luck!!! 2)Thank you for reaching out and supplying a list of the books, we will go over the list and get back to you. 3)The dealer that came out to the house was the only real interested party.
  5. We all miss things and we all see things differently, when in doubt I tend to under grade, better to be low and it comes back higher than the other way.
  6. The bindery defect should not affect the grade as is, blunted corners, stress lines with color break, creases at the bottom corners... 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to TopAn above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  7. The Staining is from water, normally I would agree with the above grade of VG/FN 5.0 except for the rust migration at the bottom staple so I have to estimate the grade at... VG+ 4.5
  8. WOW!!! I understand grading is subjective, only one way we will ever find out.
  9. Judging by the pics, slight discoloration, slightly blunted corners, slightly fanned pages, small stain on cover... IMO it is better than a FN 6.0 but, is it a FN/VF 7.0??? 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 6.5 FINE+ (FN+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  10. Nice Book!!! I cannot tell by the pics if those are slightly fanned pages at the top right of the book, if so I would estimate grade at... 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. If those pages are not fanned then I would give an estimated grade of... 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to TopAn excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  11. 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): Back to TopNearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. Very minor foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Only the slightest staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible. Paper is off-white to cream and supple. Very minor interior tears may be present.
  12. Back to the original subject... He was very upfront about his business, other dealers on the forum can either confirm or dispute what he told me. 1)He has 48 hours to turn over books he purchased from a new collection. With 9 other dealers local and people on Facebook/Craigslist that are all posting new finds on the internet at the same time he has a short window...After 48 hours he says most buyers that are looking online "assume" the keys/hot books are gone so they do not come in so the remaining books just sit and become stale. 2)The "fillers" are generally sold at shows to other dealers for about $10.00 a box or at .50/25 cents each or less at specials during the year. 3)We agreed on 98% of the books as I had them graded but he said..."even though we grew up on Overstreet I have to grade very hard as I assume CGC would because that is what buyers are looking at/for due to the internet so every little tick/color break/bindery defect/color fade, etc has to be carefully examined under a microscope." I graded and priced the top 35 books in the collection and came up with a FMV or $1900.00, we were looking for about 30% of FMV for those books. That left 2000 books that he was offering 7 cents per book, I am not really sure if they are all fillers (the reason for this thread). He went home and did his research and contacted my Son with an offer of $800.00 which my Son declined, we were looking for about $1200.00.
  13. Poly Bags are made of the same material and feel the same as plastic sandwich/freezer bags that you use everyday. POLY BAGS MYLAR
  14. Generic Question...I will provide more info if you need/want it. Which 80/90's Marvel books are "Hot" right now?
  15. This is a tricky question since grades depend on the "Overall" condition of the book. Since we do not have any pics of the entire book it will be difficult to determine how much of a deduction will be incurred due to the missing piece. Naturally the higher the overall grade of the book is the more of a deduction it will receive for the defect. You should probably post pictures of the entire book and your question in the "Buddy Can You Spare A Grade" section.
  16. We had a dealer out to look at my Son's collection and his offer was low, however he did happen to mention a couple of books we had that are "hot" right now (What If 10, X-Men 129) that I was not aware of so I want to be sure there are not others I may be missing. The majority of his collection is 80's - 90's.
  17. We are then talking about two different things. Your comment would be directed to an Investor, not a Collector, there is a BIG difference between the two.
  18. GoCollect.com is for CGC Graded Book Sales only. You cannot use a CGC graded book to determine value of a Raw book. eBay sold auction listings will give you a "General Idea" of FMV (there is not a definitive value) but you have to find books close or in the same grade as yours and be sure by looking at the posted pics and check the bidding, you want to look at auctions with at least 5 separate bidders and be sure there was not a bidding war going on that artificially drove the price up for that auction. My Son is trying to sell his collection and we just had a dealer out to my Son's house to look at his books. For the most part books with a cover price ABOVE .75 are worthless, he was offering .03 cents per book for the "fillers", so you can basically toss those out of the equation. Make a list of what you have and post it and the membership can help with some values, as far as grade you can post the most valuable in the "Buddy Can You Spare A Grade" Forum or attempt to grade them yourself using either... https://www.amazon.com/Overstreet-Guide-Grading-Comics-2016/dp/1603601996 https://comics.ha.com/tutorial/comics-grading.s?show=comicdefinitions I keep track of eBay sales for about 75 of my most valuable books (All Raw) every four month's so I may be able to help you with some. As I have been told several times Overstreet and Heritage Grading standards are not the same grading standards as CGC but since nobody knows what CGC's grading standards are this is all us "common folk" have to go by.
  19. Mylar is an Inert material that does not break down nor does it contain any acids. If the books are in Mylar Bags with Acid Free Boards then they never have to be Rebagged or Reboarded. Any books that are in Poly Bags should be rebagged every five years, polypropylene does contain acids and does break down over time and as it breaks down the acids are released. I have books that are still in the same 1 Mil Mylites that they were placed in 30 years ago. Just remember... The paper and ink used in comic books (I assume it has gotten better over time) is acidic and breaks down over time so the comic book is virtually destroying itself. Your goal is to slow down this process as much as possible by storing the books in the proper conditions and keeping those conditions as consistent as possible.
  20. What year was this want to see how allowances followed inflation, my 25 cents was in 1965. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Back when I was getting into comics in early 65 my 25 cent allowance could buy two comics or 5 packs of baseball cards or a comic and a Slurpee or... 7 years old in 62, same age as me, glad to see I am not the only old guy here. The only spinner racks were at the supermarket and 7-11, at the drug store the comics were on the very bottom of the large wooden magazine rack stacked one on top of the other and by time I got there they were just a scattered mess, however... It was like a treasure hunt looking through the pile of books and if I found a book I did not have...
  21. You are probably correct. Overstreet is only "A Guide", as we all know... "Any collectible is only worth what a collector is willing to pay".
  22. F.F 25 is the book that made me say WOW!!!, but I did not own that. I would ride my bike to the drug store each week when I got my .25 cent allowance and these are just a few of the books I vividly remember buying.
  23. Without the water damage i would have graded this book a FN 6.0, the water damage shown is acceptable in VG 4.0 so taking everything into account... I am going with a VG+ 4.5 - VG/FN 5.0. If it were my book and I was grading and cataloging it would be listed as... VG+ 4.5 with a notation stating "would be FN 6.0 except for water damage". (I always tend to under grade my books)
