From what I've seen, people who sell on whatnot aren't your small personal collectors.

Right. Whatnot is FOMO /hype flippers from what I've  heard. I've never used it myself but I've seen a lot of guys on IG and YouTube complaining about various whatnot controversies related to influencers and manufactured FOMO. Definitely doesn't seem like a place where old school collectors are offering up their PC's.

This is a down market if you're comparing it to late-2020/2021. But it is way up compared with any other time. 90-day average on the #27 is $4100. If you take the covid-craziness out of the picture, that average is still higher than any other sale in GPA before covid. In fact, the last pre-covid sale for that book in January 2020 was for $2000. The latest sale was $3600!

So this is not a down market at all -- it is a very strong market that just isn't insane. (And insanity was never good for the hobby or sustainable.)

Good point on the perspective of the market. Since your post the 90 day GPA has remained at $4100, with one additional sale being recorded. I think the issue is buyers aren't willing to pay GPA though.

With my great timing I've been screwed on GPA values both ways in the last couple years. In early 2021 I decided to buy a low grade JIM 83 because I had been wanting to for a while.  I didn't immediately pull the trigger and by the time I was ready in early March prices were starting to go up. At the time the GPA was about $5k for a 2.0, which I was willing to pay but I couldn't find any sellers here or elsewhere who would go under 9k. Almost twice the GPA value. Yikes. Eventually in May I settled for a 1.8 I found on IG for $6300.  Now 2+ years later I'm on the other end of it trying to sell a book at GPA and facing the opposite problem.  Damn I'm good lol.

  3. :takeit:takes precedent but PM's are fine as well.

Selling both at GPA. Sad to part with these, but need to pay off another grail.

    TTA #35 -  sold

  4. I've got a TTA 27 and 35 (both blue label, 4.0 and 4.5 respectively) to sell and with the current market I'm totally lost on when is the best time to sell. I figured the best time to sell would be at the time of the trailer but I haven't seen any evidence of the bump that has typically happened in this situations.  I'm sure it's a combination of fringe collectors bailing,  existing collectors getting out of that cycle,  the recession,  etc. But now I really can't decide if waiting will just result in lower returns.

I know nobody has a magical crystal ball, but I'd love to hear and weigh any opinions.  Thanks!

Yup - that's my old one. Awesome books. I had upgraded from a 1.0 to that 2.0 and was really happy with it. But I had an opportunity to move up again, so I did.

Glad it found a home with a boardie!

Whoa I just saw this. Mind blown.  That's funny,  I upgraded from a 1.8 and earlier this week I saw someone post it on IG. Small world. And I am very happy with this copy!

It looks like I am one of the few people who doesn't have multiple books in his collection. Who knew?

I'm with you in the no multiples boat. Well other than bad record keeping as others have said which results in me buying multiple copies by accident.  But that's only for run fillers. I always remember if I already own a key book or not.

For me collecting is about having a wide variety of titles and most importantly having large complete runs, primarily of the original Marvel series.

All of this discussion turned out to be irrelevant. The guy showed up to the show with the book in hand, showed it to me, I put 10 grand on the table and then he got cold feet. No sale.

Ouch. I guess it's not as terrible since you were a little up in the air for a while on if you wanted to do the deal (basing that on this post and discussion), but still that's pretty disappointing.  Best of luck finding another copy.

Put it this way, it's much better value than the 2.5 copy I paid $12k for this time last year. As I have bragged before, my super-power is buying at the peak.

Hey at least you bought high on a book that's not in the MCU yet! It will definitely go up again.  I foolishly bought high on JIM 83 last May and it's only going down down down 😢

I did get my X-Men 1 in 2020 before the spike at least and it ended up grading as a 3.0 and I only paid $2300 at the time.  So I guess I accidentally did something right.

  9. I've been closely trying to read the market because I've been considering upgrading my JIM 83 but the prices fluctuate so much its hard to ever know the right time (Especially with a movie about to drop), though the prices do seem to be dropping quite a bit. I foolishly bought mine last year in May and I'm worried in the upcoming weeks it's going to fall back below what I paid over a year ago :ohnoez:

That would be tales to astonish 35.The first appearance of Ant man.One cool thing Spider-Man and Ant man came out just one month between  each other!

Ehhhhhh I respectfully disagree based on the following: in TTA 27 he creates the potion, uses it, and becomes a super powered human with the ant powers. He IS the hero, just without a costume yet. It would be different if it was just a story about Hank Pym as a regular guy who later gained super powers. The Fantastic Four also didn't start out with costumes.

I think TTA27 is sometimes incorrectly viewed the same as the first Carol Danvers appearance for example,  but the difference is she didn't yet have the powers in her 1st app and later got powers and became Mrs marvel.

Moisture tidelines cannot be removed via non-restorative dry cleaning.

I once tried a method I read about regarding a technique used to remove tide marks from old books using only water, a paint brush, and paper towels but saw little success.  Didn't make it worse,  but also didn't make much of a noticeable difference.

  12. I've decided to take on a big venture and start a new run so I'm looking at possibly selling off my full MOKF run for a little cash. This includes Special Marvel Edition 15 raw, approximately a 7.0 - 7.5.  Seems like the movie is being widely predicted to tank from what I've seen so I'm wondering if it's too late to sell and make decent profit now that the movie is about to drop to not so much excitement. I really wouldn't want to sell for under $1500 which may have been possible months ago but not looking so good now.

Just curious on opinions. Basically weighing if it's best to just sell now assuming it will continue to lose value or wait and see if the character picks up some steam and will have a future in the MCU and gain value.

As far as the run I'm looking at starting, also probably terrible timing... Looking to build a Journey Into Mystery run. I currently have JIM 83 and 85 so the hardest two are out of the way at least I guess. I don't see the JIM books dropping anytime soon though so no real benefit in waiting to start.
