  1. Books arrived yesterday Lighthouse, thanks. Great deal. The Slings and Arrows book I couldn't put down, working on 3 hours of sleep because of it smirk.gif

I told you! I know a lot of folks were telling themselves I was full of it, but that book is the BOMB! Every time I flip through it "just for a minute" I wind up reading it for an hour. Every comic fan should buy that book! I just wish I had more to sell... thumbsup2.gif

  2. Glad you got it safely Steve. Was a pleasure dealing with you, no matter what the boys at CGG may think. smile.gif

Recent kudos of my own to pass along:

Easy dealings and fast payments from:

    bobpfef

    oldguy

    FlyingDonut

    Darthdiesel

    Styxno

    sckao

    ubiquiti

    supapimp

    brian1227

And a complicated trade of books, cash, and future draft choices with BronzeBruce13... Maybe at some point we'll do a simple deal... but I doubt it...

Lots of other deals in the works, it's always nice to work with the folks here on the forums! thumbsup2.gif

  3. Thanks, guys! I wasn't actually upset about the star thing. I just felt like writing another story part. I am, as always, grateful that you guys are still reading! There'll be more to come, I promise.

You better! Or we're sending greggy over to give you a foot massage... stooges.gif

  4. Coward...I dare you to kill me! angel.gif

I thought you wanted me to bring Bug back so you could kill him! Now you want me to kill you?

Better yet, maybe I should just stop putting so much focus on Mylite and give the spotlight to some other characters. No dramatic death scene, no action, just one name among many.

    -- Joanna

Write whatever makes you happy Joanna... just keep writing... smile.gif

  5. Why Would Comic Prices Increase over the Next 10 Years?

Well, it's likely that gas prices will see increases over the next ten years. And I doubt the costs of paper and ink will be dropping any time soon. It's possible that an improvement in the economies of scale would minimize the increases, but in all likelihood we'll see the prices double in approximately 7 years, just as they have since 1962.

If you look at cover price inflation since 1962, the shortest doubling period was 33 months and the longest was 141 months, but we have seen consistent results of approximately seven years. So I would say it's a fairly safe bet to predict that Action Comics will have a cover price of $5 by 2013.

  6. Maybe if I call her out House she will appear again it worked last time.

You sent a PM? Man, I need to get a better wrench to tighten these bolts in my neck... They keep coming loose...

As for Joanna, I know she is busy, and this shouldn't be at the top of her to-do list... Just wanted her to know we're still fans... Gotta spread the love, you know? tongue.gif

  8. The same thing could be said about buying a book raw.. who's to say the book you're buying raw as a 9.2 wasn't sold to the person you're buying it from as a 9.0?

    Brian

I actually was not talking about changes in grading standards...

My point was that even if the standards are identical, even if the grading accuracy is identical, a more recently graded book is superior to one graded years earlier.

If you have a choice between a book that was a 9.4 yesterday, and a book that was a 9.4 eleven years ago, the book graded yesterday is the superior book. Because the condition of the book graded eleven years ago has deteriorated since it was put in the slab. Whether from humidity, light, temperature, slab degradation or handling damage, the book is just not as nice as it was at the time it was graded. There is no getting around that.

You know why we pay huge amounts of money for Edgar Church's books and Curator copies? Because those books were stored in conditions 100 times better for the preservation of paper than in our own homes. More damage is done to the paper of a Mile High in one year in a typical air-conditioned home than was done in 30 years of storage in the stacks in the Church residence. A typical Curator copy has deteriorated more in the last 3 years than it did in the 3 decades of museum storage.

If you have a choice between a book that was 9.4 yesterday and one that was 9.4 eleven years ago, I really question whether you can justify buying the 11-year-old slab without a re-sub... because it is an absolute fact that the book is not as nice as it was the day it was slabbed, and knowing just how much it has deteriorated is pretty darn important.

  9. I think one of the things that gets lost in this whole process is the purpose of having a book slabbed in the first place. It's to get the opinion of someone who is not involved in the sale. They are not the buyer. They are not the seller. That doesn't mean their grading is perfect, it means their grading isn't biased toward the buyer or the seller.

Haven't you ever been at a show when you and the other party disagreed on the grade of a book? Haven't you ever asked the guy next to you what he thought of it? Haven't you ever asked "Let's see what So-and-So thinks?" Aren't there a couple dealers you see at shows that you don't mind asking for a second opinion? Haven't you ever had someone ask you to take a look and 'see what you think'?

The service that you buy from CGC is just that, a second opinion. An opinion from some folks who have graded quite a few comics, who don't have any ties to the seller or the buyer. The holder exists solely to preserve the book as it was when CGC saw it (at least from handling, you can still destroy one by leaving it in your car).

That's what you're buying... nothing more, nothing less. You're buying a second opinion.

As to the question of resubs, I don't have any problem with them at all. If anything, the graders should get better the longer they do it, and a more recent opinion is more accurate. Project forward ten years... Don't you think you will be checking submission dates on your CGC books? Don't you think a 9.6 that was graded last month is worth more than a 9.6 that was graded 11 years ago? In all likelihood the 11-year-old 9.6 has suffered deterioration since then. Humidity, light exposure, even the decay of the holder itself. It may still be a 9.6, or the gradual decay from storage conditions may have dropped it to a 9.4. Don't you think you'll take that into account in your purchasing down the line? Look at Mile Highs that are still in Colorado and compare them to ones that got sent to Florida in 1979. There is absolutely a difference. We're not talking about coins that you can leave in a holder for 50 years with no change. We're talking about paper and ink.

Can you honestly say that you would feel comfortable paying 9.4 prices for a book that was slabbed at 9.4 11 years ago? Or have you folks not thought that far ahead? Resubmissions may seem like an oddity now... or a charlatan's trick... But fast forward a few years and they will be required.

  10. totally off context - did you get a new Hulk 1 book as a promo for ordering Hulk cards? Just saw one and have no idea what it is.

I don't think so... although I could load a dumpster with all the promo stuff I have received featuring Hulk in the last few months... At last count, Diamond had shipped me 32 different posters since March 31st that feature Hulk in some way... I keep all the actual promo comics I get from them in a separate file, I don't recall a Hulk book though...

  11. I don't think a list exists, but I've got a TON of Whitmans. I'll list the ones I have, but it is really a pain.

Don't make a list just on my account... I know that the majority of them are listed in Overstreet at this point, but there are still quite a few that aren't. I figured one of the Bronze Age completionists might have compiled an accurate list, but I didn't find one in my Googling...

  12. After cataloguing one of my recent eBay wins and finding yet another DC Whitman variant that is not listed in Overstreet (in this case Batman 311), I am wondering if anyone might direct me to a more accurate list?

I've got a customer who loves completing odd checklists of items, and in addition to his four other lists, he's now talking about trying to put together a set of the DC Whitmans. This guy is a collector's collector. No intention of resale, no interest in following trends. He's currently completing his set of all Marvel and DC Bronze Age books that have at least three female characters on the cover. Before that it was a set of every Bronze Age book where Spidey's face is on the front cover at least four times (#155 is a good example).

Anyway... both for education's sake, and to satisfy this customer, can anybody point me to a better list? If not, can anyone fill in other gaps in the Overstreet that they know of (like the Bat 311)?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    'House

If I do much more business for this guy, I might just have to put my Orca collection together... I have joked for years about getting all the comics with Orca ads on the back cover... Who says you can't be both a dealer and a collector? tongue.gif

  13. Don't let the door hit you on the way out [!@#%^&^]! 893naughty-thumb.gif

Sigh...Matt's kicking the guy when's he down! shocked.gif

lol. I was away from the boards all day, and look what I missed! shocked.gif

    SSDD... tongue.gif

I posted a current list of attendees for the dinner for you... figured it was the least I could do since I got you roped into doing it... smile.gif

  14. Money is not the issue here, davidking getting the books is not the issue either. It's all about keeping your word. If only davidking would back up your statement about him sending the money earlier than I did on 6/15/03, there would be no doubt to this story about "the deal slipping your mind" - otherwise, this thread has about as much relevance as lighthouse's ramblings of Diamond dealers belonging to an offshoot of the Rosicrucian brotherhood and how hte all worship the Goth Princess.

Rosicrucian.... Rosicrucian... hmmm... seem to remember... um... was that the... no... hmmm... man, Brother Anthony would be pissed if he knew... hmmm... Rosicrucian...

[!@#%^&^] it.... google me up some "Rosicrucian"... hmmm... ok.... suzzaruzzafizza... 893blahblah.gif... Rose and Cross... yeah, figured that out already... sizzarozza... zezza... "quick intro" here we go... suzzawuzza... no... try the FAQ... fuzzarozza... DAMN YOU DARTH!... sizza... rozza... 893blahblah.gif893blahblah.gif ..."Twelve Supermen of the 14th century"... WTF?... 893blahblah.gif893blahblah.gif ..."These Brothers never make themselves known"... yeah, that's gotta be good at meetings... sizzarozza... 893blahblah.gif893blahblah.gif

Okay lemme check this "Salad Recipes" link... uh-huh... ok... "Apple and Carrot Salad"... here we go: Take required number of apples and cut into small pieces. Take same amount of carrots and grate them, mix with orange juice and serve on lettuce leaves.... Seems sensible enough... but not exactly thought-provoking... wait a minute... [!@#%^&^] Darth!... should have scrolled to the bottom to start with... Freaking church is based in Oceanside, California...

    *grumble... grumble*

Lousy Darth... tricked me again... mad.gif

Not my fault if the Goth Princess won't return your phone calls...

  15. ...and ditto from me!! As long as you're not being Suspended by Ebay for being caught red-handed in shilling your own auctions on Ebay then leaving yourself positive feedback to boot from numerous shill accounts to DEFRAUD bidders into bidding higher against your own FRAUDULENT bids, and to DEFRAUD bidders into thinking that wildly positive feedback was left by an actual legitimate buyer, you're OK with me too!!!

Some Ebayers are suspected of this, others have been positively PROVEN to engage in this FRAUDULENT practice. Those that Ebay has POSITIVELY caught, are NOT given the benefit of doubt and are suspended immediately, the first time for a month, hopefully, the second time...forever. As long as you don't do THAT and haven't done THAT, I forgive you, Dan (though it isn't really my place or quite frankly anyone elses on this Forum that was NOT involved in your deal to pass judgement on you).

Wow... you're sounding more and more like Robert Plant everyday... I was joking when I first made the "BlackShotzy-BlackDog-LedZeppelin-RobertPlant" connection...

But every time I see you dig down and really speak from the heart like this, I can't help but hear the chords to Immigrant Song firing up in my head...

Now why I also picture kittens in a longboat is a mystery for the ages...

  16. I sold those issues for 600$ for a downpayment on a Screen used Friday the 13th hockey mask.... As for me, i'm sticking with drinking beers, going to college, picking up chicks, and whatever.

Just a word of friendly advice... I wouldn't wear that mask when you're out trying to pick up chicks...

Although it will probably come in handy the next time you decide to [!@#%^&^] someone over on a comic deal...

  17.

I am utterly dumbfounded that NO ONE has immediately jumped on this obvious opportunity at sexual innuendo or double entendres.

I know my audience -- that's why it's filled with sexual innuendo and double entendres. If there weren't forum rules, I'd throw in some porn to keep Darth and Lighthouse reading.

I don't know about Darth... but you've got me hooked...

My only complaint is the lack of a playbill... You should get one of your fanboys to post a cheat sheet... Once you got past 30 characters, I start confusing my forum trolls... smile.gif But then, I am known for my short attention span...

    Oooh! Look! A puppy!...

  18. Holy Moley! I hadn't seen it, either! I was busy writing the next section. This is so exciting! I'm one of the boys now, albeit with girly parts.

    Yeeha!!!

Congrats on the title, Joanna! You deserve it!

Although you may want to keep mentions of your parts to yourself... greggy's in the corner having an asthma attack as we speak... smile.gif
