  1. After 3 years, I've given in to the inevitable Timely addiction.

What started as a one time experiment is now consuming a greater share of my annual comic spend. One time turned into 2 times, 2 turned into 4, then 4 turned into 8.

Now I'm looking for my next fix on a daily basis.

They say step#1 is to admit you have a problem.

Well my name is Brian and I have a Timely Schomburg Human Torch cover problem.

too late now. Welcome to the addiction lol

In the "rooms", they say "Nothing changes if nothing changes...." ...... however, when that nice new Timely shows up on the porch, rehabilitation can be most difficult. GOD BLESS...

    Welcome to the addiction!

    Great looking books!

    Timely's are so much fun!

Your doctor would say a Schomburg Torch cover problem isn't as bad as a case of the Schomburg Cap covers.

I think my financial advisor would agree !

The Salvage for Victory WWII recycling programs that started in Jan '42 and the comic book burnings of the late 40's & early 50's gave me a much greater appreciation for the books that survived both those events.

Got to thank the various threads on these boards that enlightened me to the rich history that envelopes the early GA of comic books!

  4. (TTA 3 and JIM 45, in case you were wondering).

I'm wondering why there are no pics? :baiting:

    Here you go, Doc...

That JIM45 is gorgeous. Usually, I stay in the post-Atlas implosion era, but that book with the Everett cover had me thinking about expanding my collecting interests.....very glad to see a boardie won it!

The back cover of Cap #3:

That's interesting because MMC #20 has the ad for Cap #3

With the small add for HT #3 on the front:

Anyone have a scan of HT #3 to see if it refers back to MMC #20?

    Awesome thread idea!

The back cover of HT3 is an ad for an American Flag. I haven't cracked it out to see what's inside yet.

    Quick two-fer - back covers of MMC13 & HT4(3):

  6. I gave up collecting high grade pre-hero Marvels years ago because it was far too difficult but just out of curiosity what is the minimum grade you guys would accept as high grade. Many collectors have said i was aiming too high. (shrug)

I try to have my keepers be 6.0 or better, and I really like 7.5s when I can find them (all the beauty of a VF book and cheaper than the aforementioned price spike at 8.0). Anywhere in that range is high grade enough for me.

7.5 to 8.5 is my high grade for many early (59-61) PHM issues. PQ is important as well. Rather have a nicely centered, White page 7.5 than a Cream 8.5 that only shows it as an "ANGE TALES" issue.

Later PHM issues (62-63) are sporadically available at 8.5 and higher. But there is a big price curve for anything labeled in the top few price grades as was mentioned earlier.

Seeing a great deal of alternative company high grade PHM books in the last few months as well, so keeping track of the data has been more challenging.

Either way, patience is a virtue with these critters :)

  7. JIM 63 is a marvelous monster cover.

    JIM63.jpg

    :applause:

It is a great cover. One of my faves from JIM. I didn't even notice the boat until I counted the people on the water tower in response to that other post (though I have always wondered what they were doing there). It's a cover that would definitely make me pay my dime for the comic. I'd bet that most of these covers take some artistic license for the sake of creating drama, perspective being the most often bruised. But I'd rather look at pre-hero Marvel covers than any other SA books I can think of.

Yeah - more smashing of buildings and vehicles ! This one is missing the Kirby monster pants and the obligatory pointing person, but it does have the man-in-a-hat covered. Wonder what the guy at the left foot of the monster is trying to do...is it an old man yelling "get off my lawn"?
