Jimbo,i cant tell you the feeling of pride and accomplishment I felt when I got my copy of this...no matter what others say...first Marvel superhero of the SA!
Thanks also to houseofcomics..Marc,you rule!
Ummmmm sorry but the first Marvel superhero of the Silver age is...... Groot.
Okay Frankie...im with you...but only because ive one of those too.And Groot was a baddy...
And an alien,not a superhero...
One of my favorites as well Jimbo ! (yours has a better PQ and less wrap than mine):

Hope you have as much fun as I did!
Issues 2 & 7 were the most difficult to find in a presentable grade. The number 7 I snagged has the coupon ripped off the back cover (guess they didn't have easy access to scissors in 1957).
Plenty of 5's in decent shape out there - I selected a supposedly Circle 8 per Metropolis documentation during one of their sales for a little over $100 :
The rest aren't that hard to find online for under $50.
Warning: shows/cons yielded very few additions to the run as this isn't a very popular title for dealers to lug around (heard that a lot when talking with them).
The toughest part is trying to find copies where the whole "World of Fantasy" was readable under the Atlas logo - this title seems to commonly suffer from cover wrap issues.
Good luck, enjoy and I can't wait to see the results!

Noticed I only needed 2 or 3 more to complete the run, so I spent the summer hitting shows/cons/flea markets and then finally resorted to MCS to finish this off:
I know, it's the perennial cellar dweller of the PHM titles, but it was a fun spring/summer venture.
And yes, the rug really ties the room together.

...... and let's face it, these things have been dated for years, but they're still cool. Those who love them, LOVE them..... GOD BLESS...

You talking about the actual comics or the long-time collectors of said comics?

Cool story! And a very good looking book. Really bright!
When I show off my books to friends or family I can see the appreciate most everything but no one seems to care much for the preheros unless I give them a real quick history lesson . It's hard to do with out jamming it down their throat.
I've ran into guys buying up variants at shops who had never even heard of them.... or jack kirby.
I do love them...
Welcome to the PHM club!
Same story for probably many here ! That's why this thread steadily remains on the first page for over a decade...we're a focus group.
"My name is ____ and I have a Pre-Hero Marvel problem"

Could you guys pull out your crystal ball for me? I love preheros. I'm in my 20's and feel like not many people my age appreciate or will grow to appreciate these books. I actually sold my highest graded one today (On the "other guys" fb page) because I wanted a new key marvel while I can still afford it. I figure it will only go up while at best these stay relatively the same. I actually think these will drop in value as the older people that like them.....get older.
What do you think? Any input?
Good question. Like many of the older books, there will likely emerge certain Icon examples that will retain their appeal. Their relative scarcity in decent shape will likely soften any fall. GOD BLESS...

I'd agree with all this. I would also add that completionists that are after the hero runs of many of these books (especially the "big four" of ST, JIM, TTA, TOS) will also end up going after the pre-hero segment of the title and get the bug. I think that this is one of the reasons that some of the "non-hero" Atlas pre-hero (WOM, Astonishing, Uncanny Tales, etc) tend to have much softer prices relative to those main four books that made it into the hero era.
Agree with both of the above about the long-term prospects.
You're about the same age when I first got into the pre-hero segment. I was buying early Avengers at the Medina County Flea Market and the dealer recommended some Amazing Adult Fantasy issues. He told me the whole story about the Atlas implosion and the rise of the Marvel heros in the early 60's in great detail. Every show, I got a mini-lesson on the history of Marvel comics and he got a chunk of my paycheck. Not sure if he was just a great salesman (not many people were buying these back then and he was probably happy to move inventory) or a considerate dealer educating his customer.
After that, I was always on the look-out for the early PHM.
Coincidentally, I saw the same dealer today at the Akron Comic Con - his name is Nelson and this was officially his last show before retiring from the circuit.
This was my last deal from Nelson after buying from him for over 35 years:
Good luck greenhoody!

I am also not looking at what someone paid or individual values. I'm looking at population. There are 36 slabbed universal Action 1's. There are thousands of slabbed ASM 300s.
So to use your example-- I am looking at you comparing values based on stock shares in one case of less than 40 total and giving them the same treatment (so to speak) as one with 8506 outstanding shares.
My point being that if you only looked at books that had total slabbed "shares" in a range of say 1000- 4000 or some other similar range (1000-2000), that makes the market cap information seem more like comparing apples to apples. I base that on the assumption that those meeting the criteria have similar demand, availability, and general total population.
Wal-Mart stock is $72 per share. Berkshire Hathaway is $210,000 per share.
Wal-Mart has more than 2,000 times the outstanding shares of Berkshire.
Market cap is the same calculation for both. No special rules are needed.
It's an apples to apples comparison no matter how insane it might appear.
Wal-Mart is ASM #300. Berkshire Hathaway is Action #1.
ASM #300 has more than 200 times the outstanding shares of Action #1.
Market cap is the same calculation for both. No special rules are needed.
It's an apples to apples comparison no matter how insane it might appear.
Keeping it simple.
So wait until the 10 billionth Spawn #1 gets slabbed and it's worth $0.09, the market cap of $900 Million blows these all away.
In all seriousness - FASCINATING analysis - a true mathletic accomplishment ! Thanks for your effort putting this all together!

A m a z i n g set!
After totally under-estimating the final price on the AA4, I went all out on my lone pickup this auction:
Pic of World of Fantasy #16 in 9.2 removed
Now just need a 15 in grade and my WOF pre-hero run (15-19) is done!

Just got this beauty in the mail today. This was one of the tougher issues of the run for me to find a keeper of; you just don't see many of these (at least I don't), and especially not in grade.
Nice copy of a tough book. I was fortunate to have this in my raw collection and got it slabbed. Maybe I wasn't looking but I don't think I've ever seen one offered in grade. Congrats !
Very tight book! GPA says that there have been a sale of this issue in 7.5 or 8.0 every year since 2012 - I've never been lucky enough to find it.
Great pickup!

I posted this before. But there seems to be a few more new members and fans of this thread who may enjoy it.
Every time I see this shot I'm reminded that you need to get that Strange Worlds #1 graded so it fits in with the others!
I think that Amaz Adult Fantasy 7 should be in the pic. The title and focus of the magazine was different and they only continued the numbering in order to not have to pay for a new mailing permit from the post office.
And there is no World of Fantasy issue represented

Yeah that would make this group shot better.....wish I could......oh wait. I can.
(The Strange Worlds 1 is raw....and being my collection is a mess....I can't find it right now. )

(thumbs u Very cool !
Its a treat to see the OA from the PHM issues !
I know almost nothing about OA, but I'd suspect that it's fairly rare to come by from the PHM era.
Thanks for sharing!
