  1. The type of collector the OP describes pretty much fits me; I collect comics that demonstrate the "Zeitgeist" of the time, or I collect whatever I find interesting/attractive, and what's going on in other media has zilch to do with what I collect!

    To illustrate:

I actively seek comics that push the allied war effort (Buy bonds! Save your paper! Start a Victory Garden!) or make a political statement (ex: Pep 20 and 27) but am not very interested in the run of the mill WW2 comic showing a superhero stomping axis forces.

My Sparky Watts run is almost complete (who???), as is my Hickory run (a comic about a tree???).

I am working on collecting all the WW2 comics that have a B-29 somewhere on the cover. This is in memory of my father, who flew B-29s in WW2.

Well, you get the idea.  --ElJay

From 1937, from K.K. Publishing/Western Publishing, this is vol 3 #2 of Mickey Mouse Magazine, which later became Walt Disney's Comics and Stories. Looks for all the world like a Fine from the front cover but I will call it VG + due to the centerfold being detached at the bottom of its three staples. Also, the crossword is lightly filled in with pencil, and the staple exteriors show slight rust (staples still look good inside; see centerfold pic).

Classic Big, Bad Wolf Halloween cover. (Slightly taller than a Bronze Age Marvel mag, FYI. Yes, they do get slabbed.)

To find a nicer copy, you're heading to Heritage and paying more, as I found to price it.

    (WAS $125) NOW $90

I don't usually go there but there is a local swap meet only on Saturday. Mostly bad garage sale stuff and storage locker cleaners. I saw Dave Hester from "Storage Wars" selling he finds in the lockers. What a tool! He really thinks he is some kind of a "star".

Anyway, it pays to look. I found this in a lady's jewelry case. She thought it was "costume jewelry" and charged me 2 bucks for it. Little did she know it was a Sky King "Mexican Aztec" premium ring. One of the better premium rings. I already had one but. for two bucks...

Sky King was an early 1950's TV show. He was a rancher in AZ. Along with his niece Penny and sidekick Clipper flew around in his airplane called "Songbird" around his Flying Crown ranch catching crooks and spies.

His show was sponsored by Peter Pan Peanut Butter. They offered many very cool, inventive and well made premiums. Here is the Mexican Aztec ring:

I remember watching Sky King, but I don't remember the premiums! Cool stuff, as usual.

    Babe 2- 3.0 to 3.5- $125

Classic GGA!! This book is a must have for any GGA collector and a 4.5 raw sold recently on DTA for over $340.

Don't make me put this on an HA auction and get $400!! :baiting: Lately, I would not be surprised.

  5. From Heritage's archives: March 5, 2017; a FR/GD sold for $125.48.       July 17, 2016; a VG- sold for $203.15.     July 23, 2017; a 4.5 sold for $513.85.

    Last spring's CLINK auction, a 6.5 went for $883.

Hope this helps a bit!   --ElJay

  6. WW2 books are getting scarce. I track about 130 titles on eBay every week, and last year I would find about 10-20 books of interest per week that were up for auction. Rather suddenly last May things dried up. I went from 10-20 books/week to 0/week, and things haven't improved much since then. As an example, this week I have only found 3 books on eBay that are of interest; last week I found 5.

As someone mentioned above, this phenomenon is cyclical in nature, but now there's less available even in the good phases of the cycle!

  7. Time to add to AJD's list.

Big Shot 23: War stamp. With all of the war-themed covers that you see in Big Shot, #23 is the only one pushing stamps.

Red Dragon 5: War stamp - blends in with the background so it looks like the minuteman on the stamp is just another superhero running into battle.

Catman 17: Buy bonds; buy stamps - this one is hiding in plain sight.

Catman 18: War stamp as part of the background.

Exciting 38: Buy war bonds. In addition to the usual Nedor "flag" (Buy war bonds and stamps for victory), take a look at the billboard in the background.

Fight 25: Tiny little "Buy U.S. war savings stamps!" in the lower left fc. This is one I didn't notice until last week!

Heroic 31: Buy more war bonds for victory.

As @sagii says, I've wanted one of those for six years now. I've only seen one for sale in that time and it was in significantly worse shape than yours. Well done!

I posted this in your "War Bonds..." thread as well. In that thread I also included a photo of the inside back cover, which has a really crude 1 page comic encouraging people to buy War Stamps.
