I finally bit the bullet and bought a Thorn: Tales from the Lantern. In the early to mid years of this thread, I never really got the fascination with this book in terms of how much people were spending on copies. Those prices look crazy low now of course but I was primarily focused with raws and slabs of the comic series and they were expensive enough as it is. In early 2020, I started seriously looking for a high grade copy to own. Most Thorns I saw for sale in the previous 13 years were mid-grades at best so I was setting my sites high for something that was at least 8.0. Only two examples that fit this criteria came up for auction and my bids, which I personally thought were crazy, didn't come close to winning lol.

The copy below was bought in a thrift store for the $3.95 cover price in 2022. I wish it was me but alas, I got it second hand :flamed:. I made the purchase in late 2022 for the most I've ever spent on a single book. The seller may have really regretted the deal after seeing the Heritage auction in March but I swear we were both happy at the time :foryou:.

    What do you guys think?

Congrats! Can't believe it was sitting on a shelf somewhere for the cover price. Looks to be in great shape.

For the record, I’ve seen 24 public sales of Thorn: Tales from the Lantern (raw and slabbed) since the end of 2008. Whenever one is up for auction, I’m always surprised by the amount of the winning bid. BUT, after a couple of years roll by, it always looks like a bargain lol

As far as raw copies go, this is the highest price I’ve seen by over 70% and both copies looked to be about the same grade (the previous high was an eBay BIN in mid to late 2020). Most of the public sales I’ve seen in the past 15 years were for mid to low grade examples. In graded 7.5 and above, I’d say that Thorn is the most valuable Bone book in existence :sumo:

This book really exploded after 2018. I knew it was always undervalued but wow...I remember having the chance at a raw FN/VF sometime around 2015 for less than $800. Doh!

I'm curious what's going on with #2 as well. A 9.4 sold for almost $900 last year. I have the one listed for half the price of the one just sold and I'm scratching my head. May just take it down. There are so many anomalies on GPA for Bone. It certainly has done well despite the show being dropped.

  3. Hello, I am currently selling 8 of my CGC 9.8 Futurama Comics. They are all listed to end next weekend (July 21-24) with no reserve on eBay. The books included are 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 23, 77, 78. I also have a Krusty Comics #1 CGC 9.8 and Bart Simpson #100 CGC 9.8 in the same auctions. I'm currently moving up north and looking to make some space in the collection. Thanks for looking!

This is SO relieving to see. It wouldn't have been nearly the same without him. They've already killed the show several times and this would've been a quick way to do it again. Can't wait to see new episodes! I just unpacked my series and I'm still missing a few later issues as well. The early ones are gold.

My son is 16, the next generation of collector who will buy your comics in the future after he becomes a tiktok millionaire. He says to buy Archies and anything Spider-man. He is no longer into Tiny Titans, so avoid those. Same with Simpsons and Iron Man.

You may think I'm kidding on the Archies and Spidey. I'm not. Both are evergreen nostalgia, for any age.

The Simpsons and Iron Man will live on forever :headbang:

Curious what people think about Bone #1's potential in the next 1-5 years.

Obviously, the success (or lack thereof) with Netflix will be huge.

CGC prices for 9.0+ are pretty solid.  Just seems like it's screaming to soar much higher.

Whether or not the show happens or is good or not, I believe this book will still be climbing through the next 5 years. Wild to see a 9.2 go for 5,600 the other day. A 9.6 sold for 7,500 as well as another for a little more this year. I've been stocking up for a while but I'm still buying. #2 Really hasn't caught up yet. The show will probably send that one soaring if Thorn is a hit. I see #1 as a blue chip.

There's nothing higher than a 9.4 on the CGC Census, so I don't know about the 9.8 you referenced.

EDIT: Oh, I see it has been taken off the CGC Census:  http://www.cgcdata.com/cgc/search/comicid/211069/6mo

I wonder if it was damaged... there's a 9.2 that appears the same week the 9.8 was removed.

As far as the 8.5 price, with only 8 copies on the CGC Census, the grade may not be as important to the buyer as asking "when will there be another chance?"

Woah, that's pretty wild. Very good point! Hoping to find a raw copy some day pop up.
