  1. 'Tis a unicorn among unicorns, that Rangers 26!
  2. Nice pickup! I have a pokey 2.5 restored. Glad this one landed in your lap.
  3. Well if that's not a classic Sqeggs I don't know what is!
  4. I, Zolnerowich, completely indubitably 100% agree!
  5. Lookin' good right back atcha! And more importantly, we're 7.5 twins!
  6. Looks like there's a spate of Lily Renee's classic covers here. Let's not forget this one: (scanner has juiced the reds a bit, but not too much)
  7. Agreed. Wonderworld #7 holds a special place for me, but I could stare at the spectacular detail and line work on Fantastic #3 until the cows come home! Just astounding. No wonder that Eisner complained that Lou Fine always took too long to deliver the goods. But what goods they were!
  8. I posted this as a Cigar a few weeks ago, but this thread is the rightful home for slaying iron monsters.
  9. So the votes are in. Based on the 100's (1000's?) of years of collective experience from the esteemed boardies, the consensus is unanimous that the signature came from the very hand of George Tuska!! Detailed metrics: Yea: 8 Presumed Yea (supportive but didn't specifically state yea or nay): 4 Nay: 0 Harley: "Huh?"
  10. I'm the poor man's Straw man, it seems, a bit too low, a bit too late, and a bit less off-white.
  11. Well, if @Robot Man and @Straw-Man can both play, I'll throw my hat in too:
  12. Now that's really cool! Do you think this was a situation where the cyan and magenta inks slowly ran out, in which case there should be a good number of existing copies that look yellow predominant, or if this was a one-off mistake resulting in just this one yellow copy? The Metropolis label on the back cover sort of sounds like this was a one-off mistake. Disclaimer: I have zero knowledge about magazine printing processes, so these questions might be total nonsense...
  13. Wow. Just imagine being a kid, reading Jumbo Comics #11, and turning to the last page of this issue, seeing these ads for Jungle, Fight, and Planet, some of the most iconic covers of the whole Fiction House pantheon. The temptation to scrape together another 3 dimes to buy these new comics would have been irresistible. Or, if money was tight, at least convince your best pals to each buy one of the comics and then swap them around. Interestingly, some say that the cover of Jumbo #11 was meant to be used for Planet #1, but for whatever reason, it didn't happen.
  14. Thanks for sharing, RM! That's so great you got to meet him. I think your example of Tuska's signature might be the best match to the one on my Mystery Men 5.
  15. To be fair, @Sqeggs is the one who snuck the contraband hooch into NYCC in a Gerber 4-mil Mylar “bottle” protective case. It was a heck of a challenge cracking it out!
  16. Great story!!! I think Tuska has been quoted that Lou Fine was one of his influences (though Fine was only about 1.5 years older...) You know what they say: great minds shop alike! Fun that we both got our Mystery Men #5's from Harley. It's a neat book.
  17. Thanks for that brief anecdote, Jack. Yep, Tuska had a hand in so many cool books over the many decades. This cover of his is probably my favorite. Thanks to Jon Berk @jbcomicbox for providing the correct artist credits (changed from Lou Fine to George Tuska) back in 2006.
  18. Well, in terms of cool creepy monsters and "riveting" damsels in distress, I agree, #7, and also #9 and #12, are among the weaker rivet covers. That said, #7 (with a cover by the great Bob Powell) has a kind of timeless Golden Age look to me, like, before they had come up with a formula for their sci-fi title. The cover to #7, and also #9 (possibly by Nick Cardy), takes a simpler approach to depicting the great unknowns of outer space, and without the later infusion of GGA that soon dominated the Planet covers -- not that there's anything wrong with that! And if you can find #7 with awesome reds, I think it does have pretty awesome eye appeal. I also love the little alien dude in the gunnery hatch! My .
  19. Thanks Spyder! Interesting. I'd never noticed the 54 swipe of 24. In my mind's eye, I do sort of see it.
  20. That one's gotta hurt. Over the precipice she goes. Funny how all three of them shop at the same jungle-wear discount store.
  21. Nice copy! What I've always found so fascinating about Planet 61 is that it is a total swipe from Planet 7.
