  1. A question for the Mad Magazine Collectors:

In 1978, I bought several of the Mad 196 Star Wars editions (as well as the Jan 1978 Cracked SW cover) and just bagged and stored them. There is not a lot of info on higher quality copies other than the Gaines copies. Are they worth getting graded? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  2. Mike Colter has been added to the show for C2E2. We have some new Luke Cage books in hand - seems we picked some up that I forgot we ordered.

After prescreening them we can offer 8 copies in CGC 9.8 or your money back and you keep the book.

The cost is $175.00 a book and includes Shipping in the USA/Canada. CGC Grading, our fee, and Mikes fee.

:takeit: I will take one of these SS Mike Colter Luke Cage copies.

  3. I have to be realistic about the HULK #1 McGuinness variant----I am not certain that I am going to be able to meet orders on the back up list. I have a couple extra copies that I purchase when filling these sorts of requests so that if there are a few clunkers that don't make the 9.8 in the grading, at least I know that everyone who ordered one has a realistic shot at 100% completion.

Rest assured, all eight customers on this thread who pre-ordered the color variant WILL get the book. Anyone on back up reserve, I just can't make the promise. :sorry:

I like to pad my orders with at least a couple. Then I try to order more if there's a demand.

I don't think getting more color copies is a viable option, however, I can do the b/w variant pictured (has Deadpool in there too, see lower left).

These are a little more pricey and has a print run of 1500 cps.

I'll start with realistically reserving ten (10) spots for 9.8 s/s McGuinness and then we'll see where we're at if these sell out as well.

  4. Lately I have been buying a lot of issues that I was fortunate enough to buy off the rack back in the day. This one brings back good memories.

That was one of my favorite X-Men covers that year (along with 152). Being a double sized issue, it was hard to keep flat over the years. Back then, there weren't really that many new issues to choose from each month, so when a cover looked great, it stood out.

  5. CGC must be on fire in terms of getting books out the door. Submitted a 80 book slow boat pre-screening on 9/13 and two batches of 25 were shipped out yesterday. With any luck all 80 books will be shipped out within 2 months of CGC receiving.

One question - I've got a 50% passing rate (for 9.8) with 20% Bronze, 60% copper and 20% modern books. I know they are strict lately but is that kind of passing rate similar to what others are getting (not really a good comparison if you are just subbing brand new moderns). I didn't press any of them since it was a spur of the moment subbing at Baltimore so I'm pretty pleased with the 50% but wondering what numbers others are getting.

I had about a 40% 9.8 rate with my 38 year old Bronze submissions. I seemed to have better luck getting 9.8's when I didn't give 9.6 as a minimum. (shrug)

Could it be because you were a bit more severe in your grading before the prescreening? I know I was a bit more lax in this recent batch of books since if it didn't meet the grade it was only a $5 fee so why not take a bit of a gamble and see how it goes.

Perhaps. I think I am getting a better feel for the higher end grades this past year. When I collected last (in 1983), NM was a really nice looking comic. Now, that can encompass anything at or likely above a 9.4. It's been quite the learning experience and the first few months I graded some issues that I should not have.

  7. Many Modern ST Received 8/23

    Graded 10/22

    Shipped 10/31

A lot of the grades are not what I expected. A bunch!!! lower than expected and a good number of 9.8's that were unexpected.

So are you happy or sad? lol

I'm not sure. I certainly need to use the word "pre-screen" more often. :)

  8. Duplicate from the sales thread. :) It really is an awesome book.

The grader's notes listed lite bends top back spine (shown on second last image). The front cover is amazing .. both are, actually. I offered this to a Board member last week and will extend the offer to other board members. .. ( Yes, the last GPA a year and a half ago was less, but there are only 37 copies at 9.6 or greater and this is almost a 40 year old book). I will keep this up for a few days and then send it to clink or MCS.
