Was looking through Daredevil #106 and ran across this ad. Then I noticed it was the same address as the address in the indicia. Wonder what the deal was with this issue and why someone there or the publisher wanted this two year old issue so badly. Five bucks is quite a bit for a two year old comic in 1953. Strange.

There's an early issue of ASM where he is called "Super-Man" in one panel.

Also an early issue of X-Men where ice man freezes milk and makes ice cream, without any other ingredients.

But now that I think about it, Crumb didn't start out in comics. He didn't publish a comic until 1967, his first real job was drawing greeting cards.

Is there really any at all? Crumb isn't mainstream and neither are the others. Panter maybe, since he did a major mainstream thing that was popular, Pee Wee, but 99 percent of people don't know who he is, or Crumb either. But I guess since Crumb has done New Yorker covers that counts. But then Chris Ware should be in the list too.

I love marvel westerns, just was looking at this one last night, it has cool Jack Davis art in it.  People seem to ignore or just aren't aware that superheros were never the most popular comics, until like the 80s and even then I don't think they were. As far as silver age, superheros were no where near as popular as people like to think. the amount of superhero titles was tiny compared to everything else. In the early 60s you have Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disneys comics and stories selling like a million or a milion and a half copies a per issue alone and I think a couple archie titles were selling in those numbers too. Go back to the 50s and it was even more, with like 600 titles a month and only about four of those being superheros. I never understood why superheros became this thing comics are known for. People just ignore the fact that any other comics exist or play down how non superhero comics were always way more popular. I can't even tell anyone I am into comics without them assuming its batman and spiderman. It just confuses them if you try and talk about anything else. It's sad.

Someone should post some pictures of the splash pages from the Marvel monster comics. The ones I have seen are awesome.

Is Mrs. Beverly Hills of Hollywood #1 a big deal for some reason? Why is the ad noted on the label like that?

I love this cover. I thought it looked like different people drew different parts of it and the zombie guys looked Basil Wolverton ish to me. Looking it up on GCD, they say the same thing, though only that the girl was drawn by someone else. The witch doesn't look like a Wolverton drew it to me either. The whole thing looks totally cut and pasted together from at least three different things.

I don't know much about comics past the 70s, but I don't remember ever seeing a coke ad in any comics ever. I know there was pepsi ads in lots 40s and 50s comics, with the pepsi cop comic and in the 40s some other soda ads like Kooba.

Because it was a simpler time?  Classy + classic?  Just something so pure about the era in comics.

Because they were just fun hacked out things without any pretenesousness at all, done to make a quick buck. I love the "crude" drawings and crazy stories, they were aimed at kids, so they are fun and absurd, they weren't aimed at teen and adult fanboys and a tiny inbred superhero group like today. Also the staggering variety of different types of comics is what I love. Last night I was looking at a coverless comic I have, I don't even know what title it is, but it has a funny animal story with pigs, then right after that a crime story with splash page of a woman dead with a knife in her chest and blood all over, then after that back to a humor story, then some puzzle pages and a story about boxers. All of it beautifully crude and crazy. To me that's why I like "golden age" comics and really all comics like pre 1962 or so. After that pretty much you have to go to undergrounds and self published stuff for really cool interesting comics.

Oh, and just the fact that they are old does it for me too, these crumbling old artifacts from a different time and that awesome smell of old decaying newsprint, there's nothing like it.

I could care less what condition it is in, as long as I can still look through it and enjoy it, even if it is missing pieces or covers. I'll take anything, I just like old comics.

This is what this grading and fads do, it's all about money and people will buy anything to own some fad or popular desired thing and people will do anything to make a buck off of it. I don't blame anyone, I would do this if i could make a good buck off it or piece out a action comics #1 or something. Why not? some sucker will buy it a page and pay a lot for it because it is popular and desired.

Strange, not even a week ago I was watching the Robert Crumb documentary and he talks about him and being influenced by him and it made me dig out some comics I have with his work. Great Stuff.

It's different for everyone I guess.  I don't have much nostalgia for things I had as a little kid or things in my lifetime. I have nostalgia for times and things that existed long before I did. When I was 11 I was digging through antique stores and flea markets for old comics from the 40s and 50s and old pulp magazines and pretty much anything pre 1962ish. I was a weird kid.

That's the cover from Detective 27, not Batman 1. Pretty much the entire story in Detective 27 is a direct swipe of something, Flash Gordon panels, panels from some Big Little Books. there's an article somewhere online that shows all the stuff Kane swiped from.

First one I thought of. With a Kirby cover no less. I think this and the next two issues were his only appearances.

I think there might have been ones I had before this, I think some gold keys, but this is the only one I remember and still have. My uncle gave me it when I was like 4 or 5.

Having only see this cover as a tiny thumbnail in the photo journal, I always assumed the bullet was going through that guy. Guess not    I like the odd proportions and the sort of wonky perspective on the stairs.

It's always been a classic cover to me, but I had no idea anyone else thought so. I have had my copy for probably 25 years and don't think I have ever seen another copy in all that time. It seems to be pretty scarce.

Picking a second top 5 is even harder than the first 5......

A neighbor of mine was moving a few weeks ago and piled all kinds of magazines and stuff by the dumpster and I saw this sticking out and had to take it, I love this cover. There were some 90s archies there too which I kind of regret not taking.

No one is going to be impressed with my picks   and I guess I broke the rules since most aren't golden age, but these are the one's I'd pick if I had to only have 5 comics for the rest of my life, just ones I enjoy the most and have sentimental value to me.
